View 3 RepliesI need to find a way of modifying this function so it only initiates a request if there is a period of say 2 seconds of inactivity. The user inputs some text, and if they stop typing for 2 seconds, it should then fire off the request. Can someone tell me how i can check for inactivity in the #inputString field? This must involve some kind of timer, but how should it be structured?the lookup function sends the current value of inputstring to another function which posts it to the server side file which then returns the results in a box.
$(function() {
$('#inputString').keyup(function(e) {

i need to ask the user for details about a car, i will not know how many cars are going to be stored and therefore need an array i think. I need the function for asking the user and will need to repeat the code later in a menu. at this stage i just want to ask the user for input, store it in array and use an alert to check if it works?
<html>
<script>
// Purpose: Gather car information and store it in a datbase
// Ask user for REG info, CAR MAKE, car VIN
var CarDetails = {
RegNum:"",CarMake:"", CarVin:"";
}

is there a way to assign an event to a file input so that when a user selects a file to upload the event is triggered and i can check out the file extension? The reason why is simple, i want to perform different actions depending on the type of the file.

My code is not working:
Here is the HTML: [URL] I'm trying to uncheck the selected radio button, then set the value to 1 (Yes), basically overwriting theinitialvalue to 1. I've looked at prop(), val(), and attr(), and just don't know where to start. Should I select $('#set_q157 input') or$('#set_q157 input:radio'), or each individual radio?
Do I need to each them, and check if its checked, then change its value, or is there a way to select all three inputs as just one radial button? It would also need to work if the input has not yet been checked.
I am trying to create a text area input filed for user input, and i want to be able to allow the user to format thier text, just like the ones used in this user forum. I am writing my website in html, php, javascript and css with a MySql database. I am trying to understand how to create such an format-able text area for input.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have tried to write a wait function but it seems like it will not brake the while loop. I tried two different solutions. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong, and come with another suggestion? If I call the function like this: wait(500); it should wait 500ms right?
function wait(time) {
while(1){
setTimeout("break;",time);
}
}
function wait(time) {
var flag=0;
while(flag=0){
setTimeout("flag=1;",time);
}
}
I want to check whether the user have enabled javascript on their browser or know if not then give an alert msg.
View 16 Replies View RelatedNot sure if I posted this in the right area since its a Javascript/PHP related problem.I have no clue how to check if a user didn't leave the site.Ofcourse you can use the Onunload() or Beforeunonload() function.But some browsers like Opera and Safari and who know what other browsers don't support it.Is there any other alternative?Like expecting server side each X seconds a AJAX request from the user?If the user doesn't send a request, the user has left.

if not whats the preferred or standardized use to avoid conflict..
I'm now working on kind of invoice form which in it the user can add as much input field as he wants.
The problem is that after adding a new input field - the content in the other fields is deleted.
Code:
On a single form, I need to capture the users input on this input box
HTML Code:
<p>
<label for="Student ID">Student ID
</label>
<input type="text" name="sesStudID" />
</p>
to this input box HTML Code: <p><label for="User Name">User Name</label><input type="text" name="sesUserName" disabled="disabled" /></p> so as the user inputs to the first input box it will at the same time appear on the second input box.
i installed a shout box for my users, its integrated by using session username. but what i want to do is have a username list under the shoutbox that shows which members (usernames) have the box open. that way the other members can see someone is out there to see their message.. one alternative would be to just have the shoutbox auto open (which i need to learn how to do) as soon as they sign on to the site, but what if they close it right away i still have the same issue (they cant see the message that someone is sending them) here is how i open the window now, they have to click on the link.
<a href="#" onClick="javascript:popup=window.open('shoutbox/minichat.php','SHTB','status=0,menubar=0,resizable=0,scrollbars=0,width=297px,height=300px');"><font size="2">Shoutbox</font></a>
so how do i know which users have it open? and how to i autostart the shoutbox? (do i used onload and onunload?)
I need to get the object that was just clicked, to insert into a JavaScript function. I've tried "function('this')" and similar things, but it doesn't work.

I'm designing an online psychological experiment and I want to see if the user refreshed a page (to see if he was trying to see an image that he was supposed to see only once).

I have 3 select pulldown boxes where a user will select a year (either
2002 or 2001), a week (one thru 52), and a database (short data or long
data). But if a user selects a week that is less than 4, the 3rd select
pulldown will only show the choice of "short data", as they will not be
able to select "long data". Is it dynamically possible in javascript to
program a third pull down in this fashion?

I currently run a website similar to digg, where users can vote on a story. What I have been using so far to create the vote buttons, are just simply links that insert a vote into a database. And if a user tries to vote again on the same story, it attempts to insert the vote into the database, (im using MySQL btw), but when it cannot, they are redirected to a page where it tells them they have already voted on the story.
Now I thinking there has to be a better way to do this, and that's when digg came to mind. Can someone please point me in the direction of a javascript tutorial/wiki etc. on creating javascript buttons that interact with a mysql database AND remember that you have voted.
As this forum has been so helpful before, this time it's a JS question:I have a list of checkboxes from which the user can select 1 or more to check and perform an action upon.Thus, all checkboxes have the same "name" (in ASP code, since it's DB-related):
response.write "<input type=checkbox name=""FieldName"" value="&obj("OrderID").value&">"
I call JS using a button:
<img src="images/TrashBin.png" border=0 onclick="Delete(document.FormName.FieldName)">

I'm trying to figure out with Java Script how I would have Java Script check and see if a check box is or not empty. The goal is to only allow the user to have one box checked at any time in a form. That means, if they click on another one and there is already one checked, it would uncheck the one that was checked and make the one that the person checked on next checked.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am trying to allow a user to easily uncheck/check all checkboxes in a form by checking or unchecking a checkbox. The checkboxes would be in a form like so:
<form action="" method="post">
<input type="checkbox" name="checked[]" value="1">
<input type="checkbox" name="checked[]" value="2">
<input type="checkbox" name="checked[]" value="3">
<input type="checkbox" name="checked[]" value="4">
</form>
I use an event handler to call a function:
<input type="checkbox" name="checkall" onchange="checkall('checked[]', this.checked)">
And here is the function:
function checkall(box_name, current_state) {
all = document.getElementsByName(box_name);
action = (current_state == "checked") ? "false" : "true";
for (i = 0; i < all.length; i++) {
all[i].checked=action;
}}
The event handler should pass the name of the checkboxes and whether the "check all" checkbox is currently checked or not to the checkall() function. Nothing happens when I check/uncheck the "check all" function.
So I have a nice little hand rolled Ajax call to my server pulling a list from the database and displaying it in a drop down list dependant on the user input. Aka Google suggest. I am wondering if the quickest way to do this is to call the database each time with Ajax and search the results with the input, or to write an xml from the database and search that. Then when the Database is updated rewrite the xml file.
Am I underestimating MYSQL again? Or not, and I feel it would be good practice to write the xml file because it will essentially mean a lot less database calls. But I dont know how fast searching an xml file would be in comparison to a db call. The results from the database are say 500 entries anywhere between 10 - 100 characters each. I want to know A. The best way to do this B. Lets say the site will have pretty high traffic so I am looking for it to be as tweeked as possible. I can test but thought at the end of my week it was worth seeing what peoples advice is.
I want to restrict the user from being entering the value in <input type="file">. It works fine in IE but not in Mozilla. I am sending my code also which works in IE and not in Mozilla...
