Autocomplete AKA Google Suggest Made - Whats The Best Thing To Call Database Or Xml

So I have a nice little hand rolled Ajax call to my server pulling a list from the database and displaying it in a drop down list dependant on the user input. Aka Google suggest. I am wondering if the quickest way to do this is to call the database each time with Ajax and search the results with the input, or to write an xml from the database and search that. Then when the Database is updated rewrite the xml file.
Am I underestimating MYSQL again? Or not, and I feel it would be good practice to write the xml file because it will essentially mean a lot less database calls. But I don�t know how fast searching an xml file would be in comparison to a db call. The results from the database are say 500 entries anywhere between 10 - 100 characters each. I want to know A. The best way to do this B. Lets say the site will have pretty high traffic so I am looking for it to be as tweeked as possible. I can test but thought at the end of my week it was worth seeing what peoples advice is.

how to use the autocomplete jQuery plugin best to my needs. I'm looking to replace a select box with the Autocomplete plugin, but not quite sure how to accomplish this. In my select box, I have the option that is displayed is not the same as the data that is submitted.
ex: <option value="123">This is Displayed </option> However, with the autocomplete, since it is using a textbox, the values that are displayed, are submitted. Do I have to hack around using hidden fields to accomplish this type of behaviour?

I have a site setup that uses ajax to create a suggest popup like google suggest. As the user types in each letter, it pops up a div that lists the possible suggestions that the user can select to populate the text field. It works fine, but in order to select a suggestion, I have to select the suggestion with the mouse. However, I would like the ability to use the arrow keys to select the suggestions....

I have set up a disclaimer page for our public access PCs at our Libraries which has the following function:

and then in the body tag I have onunload=breach()
This works fine for all websites entered into the address bar except if
you enter www.google.com
What it is supposed to do is bring up the prompt and when you click on the OK button it will go back to the disclaimer page. They should only be able to get to the web by clicking on the 'Yes I
agree' button at the bottom of the disclaimer page. Does anyone out there know why google doesn't fire up the disclaim.htm page like all the other sites? It is very frustrating.

I am new to jQuery and I am trying to create an autocomplete textbox. When I use a small test database, it works fine but when I use my production database with over 3000 records, it slows to a crawl. It take >20 seconds to load the page and with each letter I type (even though I set minChars to 3), the browser times out asking if I want to continue running the script. My feeling is I need to use AJAX but I have never done that and don't know how to. I code in classic ASP with an Access database. Can anyone provide some sample code how to do this. Unfortunately I am under a time pressure to complete this project.

I am looking for an Ajax combobox (drop down, not a text box) auto complete script. I searched for it on Google and only result which seems similar to what I am looking for, is dhtmlxCombo. And that one is too complicated for me. What I basicly need is:
When the client types on the drop down, the records appear from MySQL database and when the client chooses one and submits the form, I want the ID (not the text written) to be posted.

Why is the input type = radio on this page is not getting the value assigned to it after the user clicks on the related selection? I have a table with a list of games in rows. I want the user to be able to close/hide the game they don't want to play. At the moment I am using this;

This hides the games the user doesnt want to see on the page. But before the game is hidden I want to make an Ajax call to the database and add the user's preference into the table so next time the user comes to the page I can hide the game from the start. How can I do this?

I have a js file located on domain A, and on domain B i have included the js file, i want to change some information within my js file depending on the url(pulled from a database). I already have pulled the url via some coding and I am wondering if I use Ajax on domain B will this actually pull the information or will it stop it because of cross domain security? If it will block it, how can I pull this off?

I am trying to develop an application, where I am accessing the data available in a remote server and rendering the data in an HTML page in my local system, using an Ajax call. I am having an issue with using an overlay on a google map. The overlay works fine initially, but if I choose a different map type (example: Satellite) I lose the overlay. Is there a way to listen for a map type control click? Or a way to detect when the map type changes? I want to call a function to reload the overlay when the map type changes.

I am creating a job ticket object that will interact with a database. It has to update the database on the fly via AJAX. Within the job ticket object, I have instances of a Component Object. Within the Component Object, I have an instance of an Editor Object. One of the methods of the Editor object is a function to edit some text and when it's submitted, it will update the database. All of that is working fine. My problem is that I need to refresh the screen with the new contents of the database. I have a method in the Component Object that refreshes the screen, but how do I call it from within the Editor Object? I believe it has to be called there because the editor object has a handler for the form submission and the AJAX function. So I'll have to reference a callback function once the AJAX request is handled, but I don't know how to call it.
I know that sounds kind of convoluted, so hopefully, this very simplified code will paint a better picture of what I'm trying to do:
