Detecting Dynamic Page Changes

Apr 7, 2007

I'd like to be able to detect when page content is dynamically changed
by Javascript. I'd like to detect any changes to the content, such as
the addition of new DOM elements and when DOM elements that are hidden
are made visible (or vice versa). I will have no advance knowledge of
the scripts that will be run along with the script I will create.

I've implemented a solution that works reasonably well, but I'm not
sure if there are cases I'm not thinking of where it will fail, or if
there are more efficient means of doing the same thing.

My solution is to simply retrieve and periodically compare the content
of the innerHTML property of the main body tag elemnt.

So, summarized as follows:

function check() {
var bodyContent = document.getElementsByTagName('body')[0];
if(bodyContent != oldBodyContent) {
alert('body changed');
}
setTimeout(check, 500);
}

Is there a better way? What won't this catch?

JQuery :: Detecting When A Page Has Finished Rendering?

Feb 10, 2011

I was wondering if there is a way to detect when a page has completely finished rendering? Is there an event in the JQuery library or JavaScript in general to detect when a page has completely rendered. I'd like to get some timing information for how long it takes for a page to render. I'd to do this offline to see how much CPU performance affects web page rendering.

JQuery :: Detecting Field Value On Page Load And Clearing Field Label

Oct 14, 2010

I'm having trouble detecting if there is value in a field when the page loads and manipulating the fields label class accordingly. Below is my code. I'm using it to display the field label inline with the field, and when the user starts typing, the label is hidden. The problem I'm having is, since this is for a login screen, if the user has typed in an incorrect password, the username still remains entered when the page reloads and I see my label stacked underneath.

How can I detect if that field has a value and apply a class to the label to hide it? I don't have to have to specify each field by their ID, because I'd like to use this all over (member profile management area).

Load Page Into Another Page With Dynamic Height?

May 1, 2010

I have a question about loading an external .html page into another page.Presumably, I need to accomplish this by using iframes, right? I have a lot of files (around 1000 files) that I need to load into the same iframe. It's only a part of the total page I need to load and to create over 1000 pages instead of using an iframe (or another way to load a page into a page, which I don't know yet?) is much more work than using the frames.

Anyway, that for background. Now to the reason why I need dynamic height. Some of the pages are like 500 px in height, while the other half of my pages have a height of around 1500px (though the height of 80% of the pages vary per page! but approximately these heights as an example).If I'm viewing a small page with a predetermined set of height of 1500px, I'll be viewing a lot of blank space. Which is why I need to get around the fixed height, so the solution is a dynamic height. Another reason why I need a dynamic height, is because I have a 'back' button function which will lead you to the previous visited page when clicked. So if you were viewing a small page, then clicked a link to view a large page.... and then click on the back button at the bottom of the large page... You'll be taken back to the small page, but viewing it from the same point as you were on the large page, so you'll be actually viewing the huge blank space.

So... I've searched the web endlessly for a script to let me predetermine the height of the loaded pages, but none of them actually give me what I want.I need the script to work in at least the three main browsers (IE, FF and Chrone) at the same time. I've only found scripts that'll only work for IE, or only for Chrome and a lot of scripts that don't even work at all. I could give you some of the codings I've found, but they still don't work well enough. Also, some of those will lead me to the top of the page when you click a link. Since there's a lot more on the main page, I either need it to stay at the same position as the previous page visited, or at the top of the iframe, not the top of the parent page.I've been searching endlessly on the web and I cannot find something that works good enough. It doesn't have to be a frame, but so far, that's only way I've found to load a page into another page.

Pop Ups In A Dynamic Page

Feb 2, 2006

I'm new to this so i'm not sure whether this is easy or not...anyways my problem i have a link in first page (call it page A) that opens a another page (page B) in a 500X400 window.this works fine and this is the code:

function popUp(URL) {
day = new Date();
id = day.getTime();
eval("page" + id + " = window.open(URL, '" + id + "', 'toolbar=0,scrollbars=0,location=0,statusbar=0,menubar=0,resizable=0,width=500 ,height=490');");
}

<a href="javascript: popUp('page B')">link</a>

This Works fine...

But when i dynamically load Page A in to another page (page C) the link doesnt work.

link property shows:
directory/javascript: popUp('page B')

instead of
javascript: popUp('page B')

can anybody explain why this happens please.

Dynamic Page Building

Oct 4, 2006

I have a form that has two radio buttons. When the first one is
clicked, I would like the page to refresh (keeping the form data in
tact) and then displaying 2 new fields that need to be filled out. If
the second button is clicked, I need the same thing to happen, only it
will display two different fields needing to be filled out.

Does anyone have code that will do this? Or is this even possible with
JavaScript?

Dynamic Links Used To Create Page?

Mar 5, 2005

Here is a short tutorial on dynamic-links which use javascript to create the page. Ok to start open up notepad and type

<html><head>
<title>My first dynamic link</title>
</head><body><script>
var name=prompt("Enter name:","");
var age=prompt("Enter age:","");
if (name == "" || age == ""){
document.write("Please reload and fill everything in.");
} else {
document.write('<a href="javascript:dp='Your name:'+name+'<br>Your age:'+age+''">Click here for dynamic page</a>');
}
</script>
<noscript><a href="getfirefox.com">Get a decent browser</a></noscript>
</body></html>

Ok save it and test it out. I am writing this kinda fast so if it doesn't work pm me or reply to this topic. Ok we will go over what it does now.
1. First it gives you the prompt name then age. It checks whether they are both filled in and if they aren't it says to reload. Otherwise it writes down the link. Next we will go over the link.
2. Here is the infrastructure of the link.

1. The start of most links "<a href="

2. The starting of the string for the browser to connect to " " "

3. The tag that defines a javascript page and its name is dp. "javascript:dp"

4. What the javascript equals " = "

5. Start of the string for the javascript to do " ' "

6. Now it displays the text Your name: "Your name:"

7. It now appends the variable from the script name to it. EG:your name you entered. "'+name+'"

8. It makes a line break and displays the text Your Age: "<br>Your age:"

9. It now appends the variable from the script age to it. EG:your age you entered. " '+age+' "

10. Leaves a blank space " "

11. Starts to end the javascript string by closing the space for text and a semi-colon to end the page. "'"

12. Ends the html string for the link and displays text for the link." ">Click here for dynamic page"

13. And now closes the link. " </a> .....

What i understand from this is, we will send parameters with each link to a JS or php file and then generate a dynamic page each time, but i am not clear how many files we need to call and what will be the sequence. I want to implement this in JS and php.

how to implement it with JS and PHP if we send parameters with the url and if we don't send any parameters.

CSS Not Rendering In Dynamic Areas Of An HTML Page - IE Only

Dec 21, 2006

This is sort of a design/javascript question. It involves CSS
rendering in dynamic areas of a page using IE.

E 6 & 7

HI There, We've created some example static html pages (using CSS)
that look great in IE. We are now converting these into dynamic pages
that use javascript to dynamically update certain areas of the page.
After the conversion the dynamic areas of the page do not render the
CSS styles (the styles are not displaying correctly). This only
happens in IE. The styles display correctly for other browsers
(firefox).

I am using the javascript DOM to update the dynamic areas of the site.
For example when creating a <atag that needs attribute
class=over....I add the following code.

linktag = document.createElement("a");
linktag.setAttribute("href",pathName);
linktag.setAttribute("class","over");

it's the class=over that is not rendering when the page is updated.
Has anyone seen this?

Is it possible to embed all of them into one page by writing different functions? i did try and it gives me the next questions by creating a dynamic page but when the yes and no button do not populate. is it possible?

JQuery :: How To Load Dynamic Content From ASPX Page

Feb 9, 2011

I have jQuery loading content from an aspx page - however, once this is loaded, jQuery doesn't appear to "see" the content. For example, in the code below, I am retrieving a table, with the class "stripeme" from the aspx page - I then try to add the mouseover/alternate row scripts, but my table does not change.

My main page is:
(page head info removed for length)
<script type="text/javascript">
function showDetails() {
var div = $("#divResult");
div.slideUp(function () {
div.load("getContent.aspx", .....
Should I add dynamic content, that I then want to manipulate using jQuery, in some other way?

JQuery :: Load Specific Content From A Dynamic Page Into A Static One?

Nov 8, 2010

The original question was: does anybody know how to load a specific content and not an entire web page when using the jQuery.get below?

$.get('filename.html', function(data) {
$('.class_name').html(data);
});

and was given this code to use/try:

$.get('filename.html', function(data) {
$('.class_name',data).html(); //returns the HTML of .class_name inside of filename.html
});

but it didn't quite work. It loads the entire web page into the defined class name rather than loading a specific content (Look below for further understanding)The filename.html which has content tag names like "[Copyright Year] that goes in the footer position of the site gets dynamically generated.I've created another static page help.html that has pretty much the same content overall except the dynamic content won't get loaded with the content tag (the system doesn't allow static pages to load them). This is what brought me to this solution. So now that I've added a class name to the indicated class that I want to load it pulls all the content and styling of the site rather than just the dynamically generated content of (filename.html) .

<div class="adp_footer">[Copyright Footer]</div> <---- Doesn't get loaded when I used any of the above mention jquery strings,

JQuery :: Dynamic Height / Width Sometime Broken On Page Load?

Aug 28, 2009

I've written a small plugin to serve as a feature rotator and am having one strange problem.You can see some demos of the plugin and documentation here:

http://pbskids.org/pbskidswidgets/carousel.html.The plugin does a number of things that involve reading the width and height of DOM elements and using them to set the width and height of other elements. The problem is that sometimes in Firefox and Safari, when the page loads, the widths and heights of panels in the carousel are fracked.

Reload the page and the problem's fixed. In Safari, I can't get it to happen again on many reloads. In Firefox, though, if I reload repeatedly, I can get the problem to happen again: maybe once every seven or eight times.It looks like something's happening with page loading, but I'm at a loss to diagnose it further: is the script firing before the elements have fully loaded sometimes, and then works on subsequent tries because those elements are in the cache? Also: I've never seen this error in any of the IE versions.
