Using Close Window Buttons On A Refreshed Page
Nov 1, 2005
I'm new to javascript and im trying to add a close button function to my certain pages of my site. I use this code:
<a href='javascript:window.close();'>Close Window</a>
to create a hyperlink which closes the window. However with pages which
display data retrieved from a database using PHP i use a form to submit
a search on the page which displays results. At the bottom of the page
is the close window link, however it fails to work once a form has been
submitted on the page. It only works when the page first loads.
Any ideas guys on how i can get a close window option that works on my
results page after submitting a search?

I'm having some difficulty in renaming a window object. I'm opening the window in question via a targetted submit:
<!-- CODE EXCERPT FROM WINDOW 1 -->
<form target="newWin">
Based on certain criteria, I sometimes need to close window 1 and have
window 2 take its name:
<!-- CODE EXCERPT FROM WINDOW 2 (currently named "newWin" -->
var strWindowName = opener.name;
opener.name = null;
opener.close();
//Ensure the window doesn't hold onto the instance
opener = null;
//Rename the window
window.name = strWindowName;
top.name = strWindowName;
While an alert at the end of my function indicates that the renaming
has been successful, when I submit the form on window 2 I find that
the window name has reverted to "newWin". For some reason however,
refreshing the window makes the correct (previous opener) name stick.

I have a product that has many features. Clicking on a feature opens a popup window with explanation. There is a js Close Window link in each. All is fine so far.
Now in one popup window there is a reference to a different page of the main website. Is it possible to have a single text link both CLOSE the popup AND go to a new page in the parent window?

I'm not sure if this question should go to the "JavaScript" section;
but I'm open to non-JavaScript (like VBScript) options too. So, I'm
posting this here.
I have the following problem:
For my application, I need to ask a confirmation when the user closes
the browser-window. If the answer is positive, I would like to log-off
the session and close the window. If the answer is negative, I would
like to stay back (no logging-off, no closing the window).
I can't do this in the window.unload event because the window is
already closed when the unload event is fired. I tried doing this in
the beforeUnload event. But the beforeUnload event gets called even
when I refresh the page and in that case, I don't want to ask this
question or logoff.

I was curious if such a thing is possible, I've seen it done before, but not exactly sure how that would work. Would it have something to do with the window.close (); function?

I am trying to create a new window from which the original page can close that new window. For some reason the following code will not work. Passing the window.open command to a variable called myWindow does not work with the mouse event, but it seems to work fine with a javascript: URL command. I would prefer to do it with the mouse event. Code:

Ok so I have a site that I want to automatically close the window when the focus is lost from the page. For example, if the user clicks off the page to something else on there desktop I want the page to close. So far I have managed to do this but the grids on my page and the scroll bars all trigger the close function when clicked on. Is there anyway to make the scroll bars and drop down boxes not trigger the function?
This is the line of code that I have.
Code:

I need to refresh a div which contains an ad while the rest of the page stays the same. I think I'm pretty close by reading the previous posts on this site, but one odd thing is tripping me up and I can't figure out why. When I call my function to refresh the div, it replaces everything on the page instead of just swapping out the div. Code:

Is there a method to check if a user refreshed a page?
I'm designing an online psychological experiment and I want to see if the user refreshed a page (to see if he was trying to see an image that he was supposed to see only once).

I am very new to javascript so I'm sorry if this is a stupid question. I made this page by pecing scripts together that I found online. I don't even know if this is the best way to get my desired results. I want the background to fill up the entire window, as well as the text and link to remain on the bottom in their respective corners and also re-size with the window. The code doesn't work the first time the page is loaded, but it works fine after it is refreshed. Do y'all have any suggestions on how to fix this.

I have several switch menus that are VITAL to my website's navigation. They all worked very well when I tested the pages in all browsers. However, I finally FTPed my site to the internet, now when you click a link from a switch menu, instead of staying opened due to the onLoad function in the body, they do not appear.
Strangely, the only way to get my switch menus to show is to refresh the page.

I have a form within an iframe that I want to use to refresh the location of the parent. I am using the form to set session variables that are used within the parent. So in the iframe I have:
<form name="MyForm" method="POST"
action="<?php echo $_SERVER['PHP_SELF'] . '?' . SID; ?>">
And to submit this form I'm using this link:
<a href="javascript: submitform()">Search</a>
Which refers to this script:
<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript">
<!--
function loadParent()
{
parent.location.href = "/search_results.php?";
}
function submitform()
{
document.MyForm.submit();
loadParent();
}
//-->
</SCRIPT>
(I think!) my problem is this; it works fine if the MyForm action, i.e. ="<?php echo $_SERVER['PHP_SELF'] . '?' . SID; ?>", completes before loadParent() is executed but if there is a slight delay in the time it takes for the server to do this, loadParent() is executed too early and the input from MyForm is lost.
What I need is to tell the script to wait until the MyForm action has completed, i.e. the page has refreshed, before running loadParent(). I'm sure there are loads of different ways of doing this. Ideally I would like something that detects the page refresh within the iframe (caused by the MyForm action) and not something that relies on a timed delay loop.

Exclamation Javascript problem with submit buttons placed close to each other.there are two buttons which have been called by a javascript here. Both have been coded to redirect to different pages. However, when I hover my mouse on the Regret button it automatically highlights both buttons and when I click regret it redirects to the page where the Confirm button is supposed to redirect. The Confirm button itself is working fine and taking me to the desired page. where the problem is with the Regret button. Basically each button should redirect only to where it is supposed to as I've specified in the Javascript code.

- I have a button on my Flash site that opens an HTML page in a popup window. In Flash, I open the new window using Actiosnscript 2.0:
- Within the popup window are links to other HTML pages. They all open in the same window. I've been using the following to create the links in Dreamweaver:
- On each page, I have a "Return to Main Menu" button that should close the popup window. To do this, I have been using:
- The problem is that it works differently in each browser, and I can't even get it to consistently close the window in most browsers:
Internet Explorer = popup message appears, asking "Are you sure you want to close this window?" or something similar; window closes after clicking "Yes."
Safari = Only closes if I'm on the original HTML page. If I click on any of the other links (note that these all open in the same window), those pages' "Return to Main Menu" buttons cease to work. However, if I keep clicking "Back" until I get to the original page, it closes.
Opera = Button actually works for each page.
Firefox & Chrome = Does not close the window at all.
I looked into it and saw that others have used a window.opener to solve similar issues. But, since my popup window is opened using Flash/AS2, I need to find a way around it.
I've tried preceding "window.close()" with "window.opener=null" (i.e. -onClick="window.opener=null; window.close()"), but I don't think I'm doing it right because it still doesn't work.
I've also seen others use codes that involve functions and variables, but it is beyond my current coding knowledge to implement this. Like I said, I'm sort of new at this.

I read about window object and specifically about creating popup windows. The code below produces a popup window when a link is clicked:
Code JavaScript:
var Survey =
{
init: function()
{
var surveyLink = document.getElementById("survey");
Core.addEventListener(surveyLink, "click", Survey.clickListener);
},
[Code]....
I would like to add a "Close Window" button on survey.html page and when that button is clicked, the window would close. How do I do that? I know that I should use (reference to popup window).close(), but how and where do I attach even listener to that button?

I have 10 buttons on a page, and 10 more "onmouseover buttons" that correlate to the first set. Each button or onmouseover button is only 1-2KB! But I can still hold the mouse over a button for a couple seconds until it loads the onmouseover button. I'm using javascript to have the buttons change. The page does load a 2MB video. Could that be the cause? Can I tell it to load the buttons first somehow?

If during the same load, i click on another item, the previous clue tip hides and the new one shows with only one close button (right behavior). Image attached. I need a script that will open a new window (popup / new link) in a specific size, but will also close the old window (where the popup came from). I know the popup window is easy but finding a work-able close window script as the new window is opened is impossible!!
