Dynamically Setting Display Property Reloads The Window

I am currently encountering a problem with setting "display" property from "none" to "block":
Browsers will refresh itself when the display property is changed; this causes the element to display then suddenly disappear after the page reload. Do you guys have an idea what I can do to avoid it?
I tried using jquery's show command, css command with setting display to block, and pure javascript method like document.getElementById("theId").style.display="block".

When I do the following line in Netscape, the popup loads as it should,
but the parent window usually, but not always, reloads as well.

The original window should not reload, but is, and I have tested it with
both version 4.72 and 7.02, and they both do it. IE does not do it.
The big problem is that the original window has security built into it
so it must be called from the right referring url, but when Netscape
reloads this parent window, it neglects to send the original referring
url, so the original page is replaced with an error page as soon as the
above link is clicked.
Is there any workaround for this, where either Netscape will not reload
the original page, or if it does, at least not lose the referring url?

Is there a way to monitor a newly opepend child window with opener,
even when the page keeps reloading ?
Say window A opens window B and gives it a name/handle "myWindow".
At this point anywhere in window A, we could say
myWindow.location.href to find out where the child is.
But what if someone was to take window A to another site, and than
return using history button, OR reload it completely.
upon load the var myWindow would get executed again, and it seems like
the handle would be lost. I tried to see if there was a
window.children collection that might still hold window B in its
subset, but was not able to find a way thus far.

Is there a way to access the value assigned to onmousedown for an
object? I've been searching online but can only seem to find how it is
assigned via html. What I need to do is access the value (the script
string) in javascript.
For example, I'd like to try to do something like this:
function virtualClick(objectName) {
eval(document.getElementById(objectName).onmousedo wn);
}
I am of course not explaining the full problem in detail, but would
appreciate any input on how to access the onmousedown value (or to know
if it even exists as a property).

The code works as expected in Chrome, but not in IE and FF. In IE the error is "Object doesn't support this action" and in FF "setting a property that has only a getter". In Chrome there is no error in the console. There are three javascript <script>...</script>s that exist to display a <td> row in a table with a particular graphic depending on the screen width. The odd thing is that in both IE and FF (and of course Chrome), the first two scripts display perfectly well. Why does the third <script> produce an error? It has exactly the same form as the two before it.
I can only guess it has something to do with where it occurs :confused: Googling the FF error, it has something to do with trying to set a read-only property, but then why do the first two <scripts> work? They are no different (at least I can't see a difference.)

Trying to add a new property to a non-jQuery object from inside each loop doesn't appear to work:
var arguments=new Object();
arguments['ticket']=ticket;
arguments['email']=email;
arguments['module']=module;
arguments['epoch']=new Date().getTime();

The 'total' variable works as expected. The the 'arguments' variable doesn't. Almost like
a variable scope issue or something. If I put some extra debug code to print out all the
property/value pairs, outside each loop I only see original four, and inside each loop only
the new one just set and none of the original four.?

I have a bunch of input rows, each with id in the form of something like.. item:characteristics:age or item:setting:type1:blah. It's kind of like going down folders to get to the item I want. So as you can see in the code, I am splitting each id and trying to rebuild it in the form item[characteristics][age] then set it to the value of the input field. This is modifying the properties of the item. We already have the item object passed into my code and i'm simply modifying the properties to the new values from the user's input.
Does anyone know how I can do this without eval? I'm mainly using it because the variable name can't be hard coded, it is dynamic.
Here's the code I have so far.

I have a page: [URL] that works perfectly fine in every browser I try, except for actual IE7 (it even works fine in IE8 emulating IE7). When you search for something on that page and have a display of results, each result has a link that changes a table row's display to visible, and hides the row when clicked again. It doesn't do that in IE7. here are no errors or warning in Firefox's Error Console. But IE7 has an "Error on Page" notice (which does NOT appear in IE8 emulating IE7), that says:

I would like to dynamically set a tab title/name depending on the ajax content returned to the page when it loads, is there a way to do this? example

I get an error when I try to dynamically add an attribute to some elements, since I been getting the error "Object doesn't support this property or method" in IE I reduced the attribute value to just alert.

Note that in firefox all the elements with the class boxcontainer gets "hello world" alert. I removed this specific code (shown above) out of the page and the error in IE goes away, so I'm 100% sure nothing else is causing it.

I'm opening a dialog box using the jQuery UI dialog methods, this box will display a form, and I would like to autofocus the first element. I'm also modifying tabindex of the different form fields of this new form in order to make them a lot higher than those of the original page, and thus navigate through the form using only the tab key. The issue is that I can correctly change tabindex values, and correctly focus the first element but pressing tab will not focus the next element in my newly added form but seems to act as I was focusing the first "tabindexable" element of my original page. I also note that manually focusing (ie. clicking) the element cause no problem, new tab index order is respected. Does anyone have a clue where it can came from ? Something seems to be messed up in the tabindex order. Tested on FF3, maybe the browser only update tabindex order on "manual" focus and not when modifying attributes ?

currently I have a page with six links. Now since I want to display the imformation on those six links (when each is clicked) in a #mainDiv (below all the links). if figured the most efficient way of doing so was to have all six "links" in six different div's -- all with display: none... and when a user clicks a link I just have the appropriate div set to display: block.
