Table Width In Firefox Not Expanding To Fill Space
Jan 11, 2011
I have very limited experience with web development so apologies if this is a stupid question. I'm using some code I found online to show/hide a table using javascript. Everything works as it should EXCEPT that in Firefox rather than having the table auto-size each column to fill up the entire width (900px), the table uses the minimum width for each column necessary to display all of the data. I've tried a number of things (setting overflow, manually specifying div width or table width, etc.) but nothing seems to get it to take up the full width as it does in IE and Chrome. You can see the page / code here: [URL]
The javscript I'm using is:
Code:
<script type="text/javascript">
function showHide(_myObj,_action) {
var _myTableObj = document.getElementById((_myObj.parentNode.id).substring(0,(_myObj.parentNode.id).indexOf('_')));
if (_action == 'show') { .....

[URL]If you go to that site on Firefox, the "Return Code #" expands. But if you use IE, you'll see that it doesn't.I could add a fix in there for the fields if they were static, but if you see my javascript, they are dynamically loading fields.
This "class":"wide" is not working:
Code:
invoiceInput.appendChild(createElement("input", {"type":"text", "name":"invoice[]", "size":"8", "class":"wide;"}));
I am using a script I found on a jQuery board [URL] and it works for them, but not for me because my syntax is probably wrong. And they also are just using 1 field and not near-unlimited dynamically loading fields like I am.How would I add in a fix to have the browser 'only' use the expansion if the user is using IE6 or IE7?

I wrote the following function to get a font metrics table and it works for all printable characters except spaces. Does anyone know how I could get the width of a space char with known font, size etc...?
I tried several different variations on the "node.style.whiteSpace" line and also tried using an html entity (which gave me the width of the string ' ') but nothing seems to work. All I'm getting for spaces is zero width.
javascript Code:
function JSFontMetrics(inFont, inSize, inWeight, inVariant, inStyle)
{
var node= document.createElement('span');
var text= document.createTextNode('');
var width = 0;
[Code].....

I make a table that shows invoice, JobName, and date.
It might show up like this...
Ok, then, when the user clicks one of those invoice numbers, I'd like to have a table expand from within that table that shows the details of that invoice
Details might look like:
So the final product would look like this when the "10001" invoice button is clicked:
Is this something I should use AJAX for? I'd like it to look pretty like what I saw in this "Welcome to ruby" page. The page seems to reference AJAX only once, and it's in the below snippet... I'm confused how it works since I can't find and AJAX imports
I tried messing around with an html tag table, but here's where I got... which doesn't even work without the complicated expansion effects:

how to embed YouTube videos into a vBulletin installation of mine. How would I go about making a vertically expanding table that expand when the user would click on the "YouTube" text? I'm thinking of starting out out as a size maybe 100px high and 400px wide, and expand to 375px high and 450px tall. I've checked Google, but nothing seemed to come up that I could use.

By default it will be already invisible. But now problem is that i want to remove this space between child row and adults rows which i have done invisible.

I have a JSP page that I am updating via an AJAX post. When the page gets sufficiently large, I get a "script stack space quota is exhausted" message. I realize it is due to the size of the response, but is there a better way than the following?
jQuery.fn.success = function(responseText, statusText, $form) {
var formId = '#' + $form.attr('id');
$(formId).replaceWith($(formId, responseText));
// Set up our form object again now that we've replaced our form with the data coming back.
$form = $(formId);
// ...
};

can a table width be set dynamically with javascript by referencing the users browser window dimensions or the users video settings? ie: if the user video is set 1280 or less, then the table width is 75%. if the video is above 1280 then the table is 800 pixels.
it may not be a good thing to do, but i like percentages on tables except with large display settings. is it too much overhead?
another thought: would it be easier to implement server side with asp/vbscript?

I want to preload some images for a webpage _and_ determing their width and
height. The problem is that the scripts continue while the images are loaded in the
background, while I need the thus undefined values of image.width and image.height.
Thus I'm looking for a function which stops executing my script until the
images are all fully loaded.
Some non-working sample code included. Notice this only doesn't work well on Firefox. The code runs without errors, but it doesn't get the correct height and width. To see the
problem the images used shouldn't be in the browser cache. Code:

However, I finally ran into a problem that I can't figure out. When I try and get the width of any cell in a table it's returning a width of 83 or 84. I have the table inside a div that has a width of 757px. I don't have a width set on the table itself, but each cell is set to 100px. I've tried to set the width in a css file and inline neither of which give me the 100px that I'm thinking it should return. I've tried both width(), outerWidth() and innerWidth(). The only one that returns a different number is outerWidth.

I have to create a table using javascript. Firefox displays the expected result but for IE, the column width is screwed >"< I have to use the col tag to set width because sometimes the first row maybe merged. All I need is to create a table that strictly displays according to the inputted column widths from my program. In below I have setup very short example that construct table in a similar way to my original javascript function. I also draw a ruler to help showing the proper width of 400px on the screen. column 1 should be 100px width and column 2 should be 300px.
<?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8'?><!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.1//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml11/DTD/xhtml11.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en">
<body onload="init()">
Hard Coded:
<DIV style="WIDTH: 400px; HEIGHT: 25px;overflow:hidden;">

I've created a table in HTML but I need to specify the cell width client side. I need to loop through the cells and set the size based on the rendered size of some other elements.
I'm using the following doctype <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
This is causing me problems in Firefox. The width attribute is being set correctly but the actual table cells aren't being resized. Has anybody seen this before and does anybody have a workaround?

To build a horizontal floating menu that matches the first row (header row) of my dynamically built table (to include text and cell height/width - needs to match exactly). I have accomplished 90% of this task by extracting the text and building the row in my floating menu header and placing the floating menu where it needs to be. However, I'm having a problem aligning the table (<TD></TD>) cells because of my dynamically built table.
Scenario:
I have a table that is built dynamically. Before it is displayed, I format the table row data (code that adds text/deletes rows etc…), which alters the width of all the table cells (via JavaScript). We'll call this (for lack of a better phrase) "pre_floater_table_format_code."
I then loop through the DOM (<TD></TD>) in the first row of the table to get the text and width from each cell (using offsetWidth and/or clientWidth) and assign the text and cell width(s) to variables that I use to build my floating menu with. We'll call this (for lack of a better phrase) "get_cell_text_width_code."
Problem:
The problem is that once the table is built (and before it is altered by the "pre_floater_table_format_code") it seems as though my "get_cell_text_width_code" reads the un-processed table cell width(s) and sets these variables to the un-processed width values. The "pre_floater_table_format_code" runs much earlier than the "get_cell_text_width_code." So why wouldn't the "get_cell_text_width_code" read the cell width(s) after they've been adjusted by the "pre_floater_table_format_code?" Does this make sense? Anyone have any recommendations? Alternative solutions?
