Recording The Time A Visitor Leaves A Page
May 2, 2010
I have a .Net website that uses a text file to record when visitors arrive on a page.
However, I really want it to also store the date and time that a visitor leaves a page. I can easily calculate the time spent on pages within a session but currently have no way of knowing how long someone spent on the last page they visited during a session.
What I need is a script that runs when a page is unloaded. The script will update a text file (stored in the htdocs folder of the site) with the current time.
So far, I have come to the conclusion that I may need to use JavaScript and the window.onbeforeunload event but I cannot get any further.

My requirement: Each time a visitor arrives at a specific webpage i want the main image on the page to be different, or more specifically, one of 6 images which will be shown in rotation. Solution: Set a cookie. Each time the visitor access the page read the cookie and display the corresponding image. Then increment the value and rewrite the cookie, so that next time they'll see the next image in sequence. NB: if the cookie does not exist (first timer) or is at 6, then the value is set to zero (and then incremented).
Problem: Can't get my coding to work. Specifically it just doesn't do anything - no error message, no cookie written. I'm a very novice scripter, as in I've cobbled the coding together from bits off the net that i think i've managed to grasp some kind of an understanding of. Very suck it and see - so far lots of sucking and no seeing!

I have merged two scripts to make a popup that comes up even if blocked, and is for first time visitor only (cookie). The problem is that the way I'm doing it, it might show one or more times to the visitor. I don't want that because it will be irritating and this is a high-priority client. I'm posting the whole script because I think the problem is calling the popup before checking the cookie, but not sure how to rearrange things.
Also, I did search and found some good dhtml stuff but don't want to rewrite. This was supposed to be done last night so if I can fine tune this for now, I'll have time to rewrite something better (or at least play around with another script). Also, the popup refuses to come up in IE - I have IE6, but I detest IE and their site doesn't even load in it so whatever. I tested in FFox3, Opera 10 and Safari and it seems to work but like I say because of the onclick - it will load at any click until the user goes to a different page. I added a refresh in there but it just made things worse - too much going on for the user at that point.

I want to make a custom visitor tracking tool and like Google Analytics it must be able to track how long time visitors spend on each page.How do you recommend doing this?I thought of using the Javascript onload event to start counting time serverside and then the onbeforeunload event to do tell the server to end the time count. I'm just skeptic of an infinite visit duration if the visitor's browser for some reason doesn't call the event (ie power outage).

Let's say you provide an online service from 7:00AM to 6:00PM Eastern
Time (daylight time in the summer). Is there way of showing these
hours of availability on a web page in the user's local time?

On one of my sites, I have a reather involved page (searchable map).
When the person leaves the page then all the AJAX generated
information is lost. Is there a way that I can retain all this data
in a cookie or so or how would you recommend I saved all the users
information (perhaps using a database on the serverside).

We have been trying to set up a procedure on our website so that the following happens:
When someone clicks on an image, the visitor is taken to our Contact Us page, the title tag is inserted into the Subject and they can complete the rest fo the form and submit.
We have about 40 pages of images, all of which have the ALT and TITLE tags completed. Each image has a description paragraph, and all pages are made using HTML and CSS.
We've seen several websites, although of course now we can't find them, that something similar occurs. Seems there was a jquery script that did this type of thing, but it would only work on the same web page and we want it to go froma category page (about 40 different image category pages right now) to the Contact Us page.
It is important that the name related to the image shows in the email form so we know what image they are referring to.
With our limited knowledge of javascript, we've not been able to insert the TITLE or ALT tag info into the form Subject so that it shows on the emailgoing to us. We've attempted onclick which now moves the visitor to our Contact page. We also can use the <a href as well.

I'm looking for code which does the following:
When a visitor visits my website and clicks anywhere on the page, (regardless of where the mouse clicks) it will automatically redirect him to another site.
I think an event listener might be a solution, but I'm not sure.

I have a team website that has several games for entertainment. One
of the games is a javascript version of yahtzee. Can someone suggest
a way, using javascript, to record a high score for the game instead
of a high score for a particular user, session, or computer. Perhaps
someone already has code written to do this.

I need a javascript that could record the ID/name of a textbox when the user hit delete or backspace to be used on the next page after submission in a PHP script.
There are 96 text boxes, they are all randomly placed on the screen with a question that came from a randomized array's keys (the script later checks the values of the textboxes with the values from the array's keys that correlate to the textboxes by the name/id of the textbox, which is assigned by a for loop that issues the next($array) to assign everything everywhere.
At the same time, it needs to count how many times the backspace/delete were pushed and have that recorded and sent as well.
After 45 minutes of research I've been able to solve the "count the backspace/delete key" problem:
<script type="text/javascript">
var count = 0;
document.onkeypress=function(e){
var e=window.event || e
[Code]....
But onto the name/id issue: I'm not sure how to go about retrieving the names/id of the textboxes. I would assume a onkeypress event for every textbox, but hope that there could be something I could just add to this code.

Somebody enters the search term, presses search, and the results are displayed, what is more I record the search term in the DB - plus the number of results returned - reason I want to know what people are searching for and how often - to see if I can plug some holes in product inventory. Anway fairly standard.
Now I also have an AJAX search box (well same box actually) as they type matching products are displayed in a DHTML drop down (like google suggest) - this all works, however I am stuck trying to work out how I could record in the DB what they are searching for in the AJAX search etc as there is no hard action - such as pressing "search", each keystroke is a new search, and I guess I don't really want to be recording like (or do I?):
h 1000 (product matches)
ha 300
har 100
harr 20
harry 10
harry p 6
.......
etc
any ideas as to a possible work around.

Is there a way to get the position of multiple substrings that match a
regexp without using closures? match() returns the substrings
themselves, not the positions, and search() seems to only return the
first position. Here's what seems to work (under Shanti Rao's jsdb.exe
shell) but I get a bit nervous about using closures Code:

I'm trying to detect when someone leaves a certain website. and this works:
<body onbeforeunload="showUnloading(event);" >
function showUnloading(evt){
evt.returnValue = "Are you sure you want to leave?";
}
However if someone clicks on a link within my site. That goes to another page in the website it treats it as if someone is leaving my website.

I need to take some action when the user leaves my website. By leave I mean one of the following two cases:
1) Closes the browser
2) Goes to some other site (different domain)
Is there a way to detect this? I know that the event onbeforeunload and onunload gets fired when the user leaves the page, but these also get fired when the user leaves page A in my site and just goes to page B in my site. I don't want to alter every link within my site to fire the onclick event and in such event to "remember" in a JavaScript variable this is a navigation within my site. I am looking for some clean solution if one exists. For example, is there a way to get the information in the DOM where the user is going to when the onbeforeunload or onunload are fired?

I have a site where I'm using a home-grown social bookmarking tool. The user has an option to "Bookmark this page" to their browser.
My code works, but the problem is that when I dynamically grab the document.title, the browser (both IE and FF) tries to resolve any spaces or special characters so that when the favorite is stored in the browser, the bookmark reads:
"This%20Site%20Bookmark"
instead of:
"This Site Bookmark"
I feel like there must be a simple function to resolve spaces, but I'm coming up blank, no pun intended...:)

I created a timer which dynamically updates to tell the user how long they have been on the page. It all works well; however when a new day begins (and the time becomes 00:00:00) it has problems. This is because I subtract the starting time from the current time, so when the current time is less than the starting time, it becomes a negative value. Code:
