Override A Keypress Event And Redirect It To Another?
May 6, 2010
Code...
I'm getting an error object required on the window.onkeypress line.
I have a data entry app and the users are keying with their right hand on the number pad and flipping pages with their left. If they want to use the normal tab key they have to take their hand off of the papers to do so. I figured it would be pretty simple to override the keypress even for the + key and divert it to act like tab was pressed instead.

look at this script :
$(function(){
$('input').bind('keypress',null,b).bind('change',null,a);
});
function a(){
[Code].....
this script bind both keypress and change of the text box to functions b and a. at keypress event handler if user type a char on input box the value of input box change to x and the user char discarded. In this case we expected to run the onchange (change) event because the textbox value is changed BUT this doesn't happen.

DOM2 does not provide a key event module. (http://www.w3.org/TR/2000/REC-DOM-Level-2-Events-20001113/events.html#Events-eventgroupings-keyevents) That's fine. I'm down with that.
According to the DOM3 Events spec (http://www.w3.org/TR/2003/WD-DOM-Level-3-Events-20030331/events.html#Events-KeyboardEvents-Interfaces) (in last call), there's no keyPress event, only keyDown and keyUp. Instead (I guess) they've defined a new interface for text events (http://www.w3.org/TR/2003/WD-DOM-Level-3-Events-20030331/events.html#Events-TextEvent), which provides one event type: textInput.
Should I not code event handlers for keyPress events if I wish to write DOM-compliant scripts? IE & Moz both register a keyPress; I'm sure that it won't be outphased. I worry instead about a new and better browser appearing and balking on my script because it's coded exactly to spec.

Is there any cross-browser method of determining whether a click event was triggered by a mouse left click or the keyboard's 'enter' key? I was expecting event.button, or event.which to be able to do this, but this doesn't seem to be the case. Checking event.clientX == 0 && event.clientY == 0 works in FF, but not in IE.

I've got a script which is called by a keypress event, something like this:
<html>
<head>
<script type="text/javascript">
function respondToKey(e) {
keyPressed = String.fromCharCode(e.which);
if(keyPressed == 'g'){
alert('you pressed the g key');
window.open('http://google.com');
}
}
</script>
<title>Untitled</title>
</head>
<body onkeypress="respondToKey(event)">
hit the g key to open a google window
</body>
</html>
when you hit the right key, the alert appears, but the window.open() never happens. There's not even a message in the Error Console, just nothing.
Is this a security feature? Any way I can get around it? And, if it's a security feature, is the fact that it fails silently with no error message also a security feature? Because it's rather annoying.

I am not sure if the JS forum is the right place for this, but suspect the solution might be JS based.
I need to fire a 1x1 image when a user clicks on a link. I thought about the onclick event but the requirement has some tricky needs:
1. The 1x1 should load (preferably fully) before the redirection happens - the redirection ideally being the src attribution of the anchor tag itself.
2. The 1x1 should fire at the bottom of the page, not adjacent to the link clicked.
Is this possible?

I have the following input tags:
Code:
<input type="text" name="fname_search" value="First Name" onfocus="clrFirstName()" size ="10" />
<input type="text" name="lname_search" value="Last Name" onfocus="clrLastName()" size ="10" />
As can be seen, the input fields have First Name and Last Name as the default values. What I would like to do then, is as soon as the user clicks in the First Name or Last Name field, that the field would blank out and allow the entry of the field. My JS looks like:
Code:
function clrFirstName() {
document.fsearch.fname_search.value="";
}
[code]....
fsearch is the name of the form.When I click on the field, nothing happens.

I would like to override the "disabled" property of a hidden field. When
disabled is set to "true", it would call a function to disable 2 other text
fields on the form. When disabled is set to "false", it would enable those
2 text fields. You should also be able to get the value of it as if it were
a property:
alert(my_hidden_field.disabled);
Is there any way to do this?

Normally, a button like <input type="image"is also a submit button.
Is there any way to override that so that it has an onclick event but
does not submit the form?
For what I'm trying to do, I cannot use an <imgelement with onclick.
I have to use a form element (and I'd rather have an image than a
button)

Very new using jQuery. Anyway, I have the following few lines which create a component on a web page.[code]...
Upon some analysis, I can see that the css does contain the styles used by my div. So now, I would like to change the colors of the component, but I am not sure what is the best practice. Can one override in the div tag the colors, or should one duplicate the .css and change it?
Seeking the best way to perform this that other in the group use.

I am trying find a way to create a specfic override to the same-origin policy between 2 frames so that I can use javascript find out the current url of frame2 from frame1.
I have read that I will need a digitally signed activex control for IE6/7 and I am not sure what is needed for other browsers.
I need this to be secure in that the override will:
- only allow frame1 (when loaded from mydomain.com) to find the current url of frame 2
- not work when frame2 is https
If this is possible does anyone know why I should not do this? If I use this in my app am I going to shoot myself in the foot?

I have a requirement to override the constructor of a javascript class. I have to execute the current constructor code and then call a javascript method. Basically, I need to execute a javascript method whenever an object of that particular class is created in addition to whatever is being done now. I do not want to copy and paste the current constructor code and override the initcomponent method. I am looking for an alternative for that.
