JQuery :: Why PreventDefault At Keypress Event Prevent The Change Event
Aug 13, 2011
look at this script :
$(function(){
$('input').bind('keypress',null,b).bind('change',null,a);
});
function a(){
[Code].....
this script bind both keypress and change of the text box to functions b and a. at keypress event handler if user type a char on input box the value of input box change to x and the user char discarded. In this case we expected to run the onchange (change) event because the textbox value is changed BUT this doesn't happen.

I have this function which prevent the default envent of a link. So far is ok. Then the function execute some tasks and then I need TO CONTINUE with the event with something like event.continueDefault(); Can I do this?
Something like:
$('.link').live('click', function(event) {
event.preventDefault(); // STOP THE EVENT
...//EXECUTE SOME TASKS
event.continueDefault() // LET THE EVENT CONTINUE. Of course, this line doesn't work.
});

DOM2 does not provide a key event module. (http://www.w3.org/TR/2000/REC-DOM-Level-2-Events-20001113/events.html#Events-eventgroupings-keyevents) That's fine. I'm down with that.
According to the DOM3 Events spec (http://www.w3.org/TR/2003/WD-DOM-Level-3-Events-20030331/events.html#Events-KeyboardEvents-Interfaces) (in last call), there's no keyPress event, only keyDown and keyUp. Instead (I guess) they've defined a new interface for text events (http://www.w3.org/TR/2003/WD-DOM-Level-3-Events-20030331/events.html#Events-TextEvent), which provides one event type: textInput.
Should I not code event handlers for keyPress events if I wish to write DOM-compliant scripts? IE & Moz both register a keyPress; I'm sure that it won't be outphased. I worry instead about a new and better browser appearing and balking on my script because it's coded exactly to spec.

I am checking if a form on a jQuery tab is changed, and if it has, the user should get a popup warning when they navigate away from the tab with the form or click any other link on the page for that matter. So I setup this code:
$('a').bind('click', function(event) {
if (formChanged == true) {
event.preventDefault()
[code]....
in the $(document).ready() function. I can see the code is executed, but the click on the link still comes through and the form is lost. I've tried .click() and .live('click') as well but that doesn't work either.

Is there any cross-browser method of determining whether a click event was triggered by a mouse left click or the keyboard's 'enter' key? I was expecting event.button, or event.which to be able to do this, but this doesn't seem to be the case. Checking event.clientX == 0 && event.clientY == 0 works in FF, but not in IE.

Code...
I'm getting an error object required on the window.onkeypress line.
I have a data entry app and the users are keying with their right hand on the number pad and flipping pages with their left. If they want to use the normal tab key they have to take their hand off of the papers to do so. I figured it would be pretty simple to override the keypress even for the + key and divert it to act like tab was pressed instead.

I've got a script which is called by a keypress event, something like this:
<html>
<head>
<script type="text/javascript">
function respondToKey(e) {
keyPressed = String.fromCharCode(e.which);
if(keyPressed == 'g'){
alert('you pressed the g key');
window.open('http://google.com');
}
}
</script>
<title>Untitled</title>
</head>
<body onkeypress="respondToKey(event)">
hit the g key to open a google window
</body>
</html>
when you hit the right key, the alert appears, but the window.open() never happens. There's not even a message in the Error Console, just nothing.
Is this a security feature? Any way I can get around it? And, if it's a security feature, is the fact that it fails silently with no error message also a security feature? Because it's rather annoying.

I'm using a code snippet to have a cursor placed in a form field once a page loads, see the below posted code.The form field in question is located below the fold.The problem is that when the page loads it will scroll the page downwards to show the form field, I don't want that happen. I only want the cursor to appear...not the whole page to scroll downwards when the page loads.what I can do to prevent the page from scrolling downward when using this code?It's happening with similar codes as well that places a cursor inside the form field.I only want the page to scroll downward when the user decides to scroll downward, not because of the cursor placement.

I got this problem with live() event.I have used it as follows.
$(".addressDiv span").live("mouseover", function(){
//clickable function here......
------------------------
});
I have used the live() event to trigger the function on mouseover in the dynamically added elements. But the problem i got is that once the live event is called it takes the class of the element and stores. And when the class of that particular element is changed dynamically the live() event does not detect the new classed added dynamically, instead it takes the former class. Live() event does not update the class.

how can i know the original element that raised the event if that event is propagated up the tree ?

As far as I understood, stopPropagation() is supposed to stop events bubbling 'up' though the element tree (through parent elements). Eg. If I use stopPropagation() on a click event on an anchor element in a list, the event would not be triggered on the list. In my code I have a popup div, that needs to have stopPropagation(), as a click on the document (everywhere other than the popup) will hide it. When I add an element to the popup that has a live click event, the live click event is never called, even though it is a child element of the popup. Shouldn't the live click get called first? If I remove the stopPropagation all is well.. some code:
$('#a_test_link').live("click", function(e){
e.preventDefault();
alert('done!');
});
[Code].....

I'm currently facing a weird issue with the onchange event. I have a web application where each blur event makes a call the webserver to store the value of the textfield. I only want to trigger that ajax call when something has changed, so i track the onchange event on each textfield to set a flag if something has changed.
The onchange event always fires to first time when i click outside of a textfield even if i didn't change anything in the field.
I narrowed it down to the following: A prefilled textfield always fires the onchange-event the first time you leave the textfield. An initially empty textfield does not fire the onchange event.
Sample code (IE 8 on Windows 7 computer):

Is there a generic way to fire an event when the state/value of a checkbox is changed by another event - i.e. not a user action. In this scenario, I have a set of checkboxes with a "select all" checkbox. I have the code written such that checking or unchecking the "select all" checkbox updates the state of all of the checkboxes below.
The extra requirement here is that some of these checkboxes have "children". So, when you check one of these, its children are automatically checked as well. So, what I need to do is check the main "select all" checkbox, which would then check all of the immediate children, which would then check all of their immediate children. I tried both an onchange and onclick event, but neither seem to be firing.

I have a series of checkboxes on a page and the goal is to run an ajax post each time one of the checkboxes is checked. When the page loads, the first time I click each of the checkboxes everything goes as planned. After I receive the response from my ajax php function and all related events fire, I click the checkbox again and nothing happens. The event listener seems to have stopped functioning.
Here is my code:
$(document).ready(function() {
$(':checkbox').change(function() {
$(this).attr('disabled','disabled');
$('#' + $(this).attr('id') + 'Waiting').addClass('loading');

I've been stuck on this for a few hours today, and I can't seem to figure out how to correctly accomplish my task.Objective: Dynamically change the value of a <input type="checkbox" />, thus causing the .change( ) event to be fired, from an outside element, with the checkbox being hidden.So, my code eventually gets to this point:
if ( /* CONDITION */ )
{
$( 'input[name="new"]' ).attr( 'checked', true );

I know in JavaScript you are able to write functions that you can just call at a later time. I'm working on a jQuery UI slider, and I wrote a function for the animation that happens when you start sliding. I would also like this same function to fire for the "change" event, but I can't seem to get it to work.
Here is the shortened code sample:
$(function(){
var posterO = $(".poster-slider")
.slider({
slide: function(event, ui){
//This is the function I would like to reuse at "change", below
poster.css(...);
posterLi.css( ... );
ptCopy.css( ... );
sliderValue = ui.value;
},
//change:,
animate:true
});
//When "#abundant-trees" link is clicked, the slider handle changes, firing the "change" event, but the "slide" function is not called.
$("#poster-switcher a[href=#abundant-trees]").click(function(link){
posterO.slider("value", 100);
link.preventDefault(); //Stop browser from following the link that was clicked on.
})});
I would like to apply the "slide" function to the "change" event without having to duplicate all the code.
