JQuery :: Finding Previous & Next <input> "siblings" Encapsulated In Other <li>?
Oct 5, 2009
I have a form that uses several text fields to set the footer of the current page. The fields are "Company name", "Street", "Town" and things like that. When a keystroke occurs in one of those fields, I update the footer with the corresponding info, using the "onkeyup" event. All this works fine. My form also has some checkbox to tell if the infos in the footer must be separated with bullet characters. In such case a bullet must be appended to the string retrieved from the current field, but only if the next footer info is not empty or does not start itself with a bullet. Similarly, if the previous footer info is empty and does not end with a bullet, a bullet must be added at the beginning of the current string. So, I have to make the UpdateFooter() function here below more subtle. From the "this" argument passed to that function, I've been unable to find with jQuery the previous and next <li>-encapsulated "siblings". I'm not sure that I really catched how to use "previous()" and "next()" efficiently.

First some sample clode:
I have a jQuery click event handler on the dethead tr's which is fine.
But what I want to find in this click event handler is the previous <h3> to the clicked <tr>
So if I click on item1, item2 or item3 I want to find the <h3>Heading 1</h3>
I click on item4, item5 or item6 I want to find the <h3>Heading 2</h3>
NOTE: Not all the <h3> will have the same classes, if any class at all.
Been trying various things from Tree Traversal but have not found the right combination.

As recently as 1.4.3 $('input:text') would find input elements with no type attribute, but after upgrading to 1.5.1 that is no longer the case.
Is this a bug or an intended refactor to be more standards compliant?
FYI - this is the selector I now have to use: $('input:text,input:not([type])')

When you press the down key while in an input field the default
behavior for some event creates a dropdown of the previously input
text. What event creates that behavior and how do I stop it ?
For example, to prevent ANY type of default behavior when clicking ANY
key, I thought this would work, but the dropdown still occurs. What am
I doing wrong ?
In html file:<body >
Search Text: <input type='text' id='searchtext' />
in javascript file:
function blank(){
return false;
}
function registersearch(){
document.getElementById("searchtext").
document.getElementById("searchtext").
document.getElementById("searchtext").
document.getElementById("searchtext").
}

I was wondering if it's possible to make it so that once a user selects a certain option in a list, it makes the next input for that form change to either a textfield or a list without losing the values entered in the inputs above.I know PHP is a server-side script, does that make this not possible?

I'm just starting up in web design and I have an interesting challenge that I'm hoping can be solved w/java script. I have a site with an application form. When the form is to be submitted, the form data needs to be emailed to the correct person to handle that particular application. However, that can't be determined by anything specific in the form. It can only be determined by the link that they clicked on to get to the form. I really don't want to have 22 identical forms with just a different EmailTo addie, which is what the previous site developer did. Someone please tell me this can be done w/java script? If not w/java script

Normally, if you want to bind encapsulated event listeners to an object you have to test for support and then call the same function in different ways, for example:
if(typeof document.addEventListener != 'undefined')
{
document.addEventListener('click', someFunction, false);
}
else if(document.attachEvent != 'undefined')
{
document.attachEvent('onclick', someFunction);
}
But there's code repetition there - okay not very much, because it's just a function call ... but what if you wanted to use an anonymous function ..? Well you can't - the code repetition would be unacceptible.
Except that I've though of a way :) It's really obvious actually .. but I'm posting this in the hope that others will go "wow, that's blindingly useful" as I did when I thought of it :thumbsup:
Here it is - it takes advantage of square-bracket notation to use a string reference to the supported method:
//identify supported method of adding encapsulated event listeners
etype = (typeof document.addEventListener != 'undefined') ? 'addEventListener' : (typeof document.attachEvent != 'undefined') ? 'attachEvent' : 'none'
//set event name prefix
eprefix = (etype == 'attachEvent' ? 'on' : '');
//if encapsulated event listening is not supported, don't continue
if(etype == 'none') { return; }
so anonymous functions are built like this:
element[etype](eprefix + 'event', function()
{
... code ...
}, false);
Even though attachEvent doesn't require a third argument, it's ignored, so this syntax works for all.

Basically I have a table completely generated and appended to the DOM in javascript, I am calling:$("#tableID" + p).siblings('.child-' + "tableID").fadeOut('fast');This works fine in FF and Safari, but IE does not find the siblings. I even did an alert with:$("#tableID" + p).siblings('.child-' + "tableID").length, and as expected IE returns 0, while FF/Safari return the correct amount (2).

I have an unordered list element which has click events registered. What i want is to be able to find the nth relative sibling to the list item that is clicked. In prototype I can simply say $(elm).next(3) or $(elm).previous(3) for the 3rd sibling forwards or backwards from the current sibling.
In JQuery there doesn't seem to be a way of getting a sibling relative to the current one, other than the immediate next() or prev(). So if I want the third previous I have to do this inJQuery
$(elm).prev().prev().prev()

I have a table where I hide a table row when the listen "item" is deleted. The item is deleted via jquery ajax. When the delete button is pressed, I call a plugin that creates a confirmation box. The plugin is passed a function to perform if 'Yes' is pressed.
[Code]...
The $(hideThis).hide(); line works. The tr is hidden from view. The next line is where I'm stuck. I know that how it is currently set up would never work, but looking at this will help you understand what I need to do. I want to edit the classes of all the tr tags that follow the one I just hid.
Here's the issue. I cannot just call the tr tag the same way I did to set the variable since I am no longer working in the same scope. And if I were to use this script the way it is written, the element it is looking for for the each statement is "[object] [object] ~ .lineItem".
