I am student of BS Computer Science first semester. Html and Javascript are included in my first semester course. I wonder what is the best way to practice codes/scripts. Most of the time when I find code in my notes. I write it first time by seeing from notes, then second without seeing and third time without seeing but it consumes by lot of time. I use notepad.

I am not new to programming, as I know Java and C++, but I am very new to the web development.
For security reasons (so I have heard), I would like to write this site in php. At the same time, I may need some client sided code. (Or do I?) I am not at all sure.
I know that facebook is written in php, and the site I am making basically has the majority of those functions.
Any inputs as to how I should go about choosing what language? As of now, my partner is learning javascript and mysql, while I am studying php and mysql.
I know that some sites implement both, javascript and php, but I was wondering if it is at all necessary to use both, and how would one know which code to write in what language.

I'm dynamically outputting the contents of a MySQL table using Python, to a HTML table, which users view (obviously) through a web browser. It looks great, but the problem is that I'd like users to be able to update these values. For example, I have the current value of certain fields in text boxes. I'd like users to be able to change those values, then hit a submit button or similar (ideally on-the-fly) to update the dB. I imagine javascript will need to pass values to a Python script, but I don't know what the best way to go about this is.

cursor.execute("SELECT from_name, from_address, project, orb_proj, app, tier, environment,

I'm looking to learn Javascript.
My knowledge of it is currently very limited, so I would like to learn it properly.. from scratch.
Could anyone recommend me Javascript resources?
Strange question i know, but i am trying to read javascript ( not necessarily clever enough to program), so that i can at least understand other scripts when incorporating them on my site as i feel this is important.
Would it be ok to go straight to v1.5 or as there are differences between the versions, start at say 1.2 and learn the differences between the upgrades.
I suppose i am hoping that i only need to start at 1.5 to make things easier.

I'm experienced with PHP and I'm familiar with JS syntax but still a beginner.
Now I want to learn AJAX And JS and I've looked at jQuery but it doesn't look like JS to me, I mean I'm sure it is but it looks to me like jQuery has a syntax of it's own and I want to learn not just a framework but also the underlying language.
So now my question is; what framework will be the best choice when that is my goal?
There are times that I am using another person's computer who has no
knowledge of updating HTML and does not even know if he has the
necessary programs to do the FTP.
I may see a minor problem with my site and would like to change it on
the fly. What I would like to know are the answers to the following
questions.
1. Is there any way to display unformated HTML within a web page
without using the browsers source facility?
2. Is there a way to modify it? Maybe showing it in a form textarea.
3. Is there a way for javascript or a form to do an FTP back to the web
site? This would obviously require id and password.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to build a site using html, css and javascript. problem is it works perfectly in IE but practically not at all in firefox. I have lots of mouseovers and tooltips, none of which will work. The only thing that seems to work is an onload random image generator. The html and css all return no errors using firefox's validation tool. I am completely new to javascript and have been trying to learn via building this site, so apologies if the code is really messy. Would be really grateful if anyone could help - I thought I was getting to grips with this when it all worked in IE, but am now feeling pretty stupid and think I must be missing something pretty fundamental. I've spent an age getting frustrated trying to resolve this.

I have a basic flash gallery that I embedded into my site (HTML & CSS). When viewed in Firefox everything is fine (840px by 427px), but when viewed in IE the gallery changes size & needs to be (887px by 440px) to be viewed correctly.
So, I put an Javascript If Then Else statement. Now it targets and changes in the IE browser (width='887' height='440') , but it also changes the Firefox one to 887x440 when it should stay the original 840x427.

i've got a multi-language site, where the home-page of each language group
features a link to a popup window that offers background info on site
management. the popup is fired by a javascript function, when they click
the site management link. there's also a "window close" function button so
they can nuke it as they please.
now, oddly, people who search for my site in the chinese language on google,
are sent directly to the site management popup window, which of course,
opens in their "full" browser window, and which also has no links back to
the main site, because it's meant to open only as an "accessory" to the main
site.
my question is this: is there any way, with Javascript, that I could
determine if they arrived at this window from "off-site" (ie, a google
search), and therefore offer such "off-site" visitors a link back to the
principal site, a link that would be hidden for visitors who clicked the
popup window from my own site?
Basically, I registered for a free board at one of the various sites because my server doesn't support .cgi scripts. I want to know if there is a way to have the data from a form on my site post to the board site -A user would fill in my form, click submit, and a new post would appear on the board site -as if they had entered it there.
If you can point me in the right direction, I would be grateful. Here is my thinking.
A) I can't locate the script that they use to perform a "submit"; so I thought I might enter their <head> data (as far as xmlns, href, etc) in my <head>; that my website might call up their script files, css sheets, etc.
B)I could code my own Javascript function to send my form data to their site. If I knew how to simulate a mouseclick on someone else's site, I could have the script "click" there, paste the data, and hit the submit button. But I don't.
C) I could size their site down to the form itself and put it in a frame on my page
Option C is clearly easier, but I would prefer option A or B. I have time and will happily do the research myself; provided that I know if approach A or B is even feasible.
Problem: I have a piece of HTML-content, with <hr/> as section breaks. I want to replace the <hr/> with a new <div>. Thus, original: <div>Test test test<hr/>Test test test</div> Result: <div>Test test test </div<div>Test test test</div> With $('hr').replaceWith('</div><div>') it does not work, because the replacement is not valid HTML.
I want to create columns, with <hr/> the column-divider. Perhaps there is also a better solution. The editor is creating the content and inserting HR's where a new column should start.
