Collapsing Menus - Alert Does Not Show Up

Sep 21, 2009

I was told to use some Javascript to achieve collapsing menus. This is my current try, but it doesn't seem to be working. The end result should be like the menus on this site: [URL]

This is my code so far:
<HTML><HEAD>
<title>Test</title>
</HEAD><BODY>
<script type="text/javascript">
var hide = 0;

function Show(){
alert("Test");
if ( hide == 0 ){
document.write("<a href=\"county.htm\">County</a>");
hide = 1;
} else {
document.write("");
hide = 0;
}}
</script>
<input type="button" onclick="Show()" value="Services" />
</BODY></HTML>

For some reason, Show isn't being called. The alert doesn't even show up. Though I'm under the impression the script should go above the first time it's used in the document.

Hide / Show DIV Tag On Menus?

May 11, 2010

I am trying to show/hide div tag using the script below.
Code:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "[URL]">
<html xmlns="[URL]">
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
<title>Untitled Document</title>
<script language=javascript type='text/javascript'>
function showDiv(pass) {
var divs = document.getElementsByTagName('div');
for(i=0;i<divs.length;i++){
if(divs[i].id.match(pass)){//if they are 'see' divs
if (document.getElementById) // DOM3 = IE5, NS6
divs[i].style.visibility="visible";// show/hide
else
if (document.layers) // Netscape 4
document.layers[divs[i]].display = 'visible';
else // IE 4
document.all.divs[i].visibility = 'visible';
} else {
if (document.getElementById)
divs[i].style.visibility="hidden";
else
if (document.layers) // Netscape 4
document.divs[i].visibility = 'hidden';
else // IE 4
document.all.divs[i].visibility = 'hidden';
} } }

</script>
</head>
<body>
<a href="javascript:showDiv('F256')">Home</a>
<a href="javascript:showDiv('F512')"> About Us</a>
<div id="F2561" style="position: absolute; left:5px; top:54px; background-color: #0093DD; border: 1px none #000000; visibility: hidden">

Home
</div>
<div id="F512" style="position: absolute; left:5px; top:54px; background-color: #0093DD; border: 1px none #000000" >
About Us
</div>
</body>
</html>

When I tested the above, everything works fine. But when I tested it on my real web, it went wrong. The div tag that I want to show after clicking a link disappear rather than displayed, not only that specific div tag, but all of div tags were gone. What I did in principle was trying the script only on the first 2 menus; home and about us. The home div is set to have absolute position and no visibility property being on the landing page. The about us div is set to have absolute position and hidden. When the about us button was clicked the whole div tags disappeared (only showing the flash banner). My main div consists of other sub divs but without id, only classes, could this be the reason?

Dropdown Menus Do Not Show Up On Roll-over

Feb 26, 2010

I recently created a website with a spry dropdown navigation bar. On preview from Dreamweaver CS4, in Firefox, IE, Opera, Chrome, all elements work properly and the dropdown menus work as well. However, when I upload it to my server at the domain URl..., the dropdown menus do not show up on rollover. I don't know what is going on. The .js file and .css file are both appropriately linked to the root folders as well.The dropdowns are supposed to be displayed under 'online resources' and 'citing your work'

Switch Menus That Only Show Up With Page Is Refreshed?

Mar 3, 2010

I have several switch menus that are VITAL to my website's navigation. They all worked very well when I tested the pages in all browsers. However, I finally FTPed my site to the internet, now when you click a link from a switch menu, instead of staying opened due to the onLoad function in the body, they do not appear.

Strangely, the only way to get my switch menus to show is to refresh the page.

An Animated Main Menu That Uses SlideDown() To Show The Sub-menus?

Jul 27, 2010

I have an animated main menu that uses slideDown() to show the sub-menus, triggered by the .hover() event on the parent. There's another animation on the home page that uses jCarousel to rotate the items in a <ul> every three seconds. Whenever a hover event on a parent menu item coincides with the animation trying to load a new frame, the menu freezes until the other animation is loaded. As common as animated menus are these days, I can't believe I'm the only one who has ever come up against this problem.What I want is for the menu animation to take precedence no matter what, but I understand that JS has no "priority" feature (not being multi-threaded)

2 Dropdown Menus - Make A Form Where The User Is Only Able To Select An Option From One Of The Drop Down Menus?

Feb 11, 2009

I am trying to make a form where the user is only able to select an option from one of the drop down menus and if they click both then submit an error should pop up telling them to select just one. Now I have found this code:

<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript"'>
<!--
function validateForm(){[code]....

the first problem is that my menu must be named "id[2]2" which causes a problem due to the bracketed 2 and the 2 after. Is there any way around that?the second problem I forsee is that this will only work with 1 drop down box being unselected. I need a code that will give the warning if nothing is selected OR if something is selected in both drop downs.

DOM - Show BODY In The Alert Box

Feb 11, 2009

I'm experiencing some strange issues using the DOM with JS. Let's say this is my HTML source:

<html>
<head>
<title></title>
<script type="text/javascript" src="exercise1.js"></script>
[Code]....

And here is the one line of code in my external JS file: window.alert document.documentElement.lastChild.tagName); This should show BODY in the alert box, shouldn't it? It doesn't, it shows HEAD (in FF 3, IE 7 & Safari 3) and I really have NO (!) idea why it is doing that. Let me show you another example of why it's driving me insane.. window.alert(document.documentElement.lastChild.firstChild.tagName); Should show P, no? It doesn't. FF 3: undefined, IE 7: TITLE, Safari 3: undefined. Again, the question is: Why?!

Repeating Blocks Into For Loop - Alert Never Show Up

May 14, 2010

I had some code that kept repeating itself over and over again, with the only variance being some named elements changing. All the named elements ended in a sequential number, so I figured I'd just put one of the repeating blocks into a "for" loop and then make that sequential number at the end of the named elements into the variable in the loop. Again, the code worked fine when copied/pasted over and over, but now it doesn't do anything. Here's one of the code snippets outside of the loop (which worked):

Code:
$(document).ready(function () {
$("#SelectDiv1").change(function() {
if ($("#DD1").val() != "0") {
$('#SelectDiv2').hide();
$('#SelectDiv3').hide();
$('#SelectDiv4').hide();
$('#SelectDiv2').show();
$.ajax({ .....

You can see there's an "alert" as the first part of the loop. That "alert" never shows up. However, if you comment out everything in the loop after the "alert", then the "alert" works. So something else in that loop is causing the whole thing to not work. I find it odd that the first "alert" wouldn't work, though, since it should be the first thing that happens before any of the other code is executed in the loop, right???

Expanding / Collapsing <div> Tags

Sep 29, 2006

Ive got the follwoing javascript code that will expand/collapse a section of my site that is enclosed within a <div> tag.

function showorhide(id) {
if (document.getElementById(id).style.display == "none")
{
document.getElementById(id).style.display = "block";
}
else
{
document.getElementById(id).style.display = "none";
}
I am using asp.net 2.0 to code my site with, the above code works fine (example below:

<a href="#" Personal and Contact Details</a>
<div id="basicdetails">

</div>
All that is enclosed within the <div id="basicdetails"> is expanded / collapsed.

HOWEVER, im geting a few problems with this method: 1. On a page load, the div tags are always displayed, is there any way of having them collapsed on page_load?

2. When i put 2 seperate <div> tags (i.e. 2 seperate expand/collapse sections on the same page), one is collapsed and one is expanded, when working within the expanded one and a button is clicked (for saving of info from a form), both divs are then expanded?

Sections Not Collapsing Properly In Firefox

Jul 23, 2005

I've got a page that shows a number of packages available for sale. Each
package has a little description, and then a (sometimes long) list of
features for each package. I thought it would be a good idea to let
visitors hide the details for each package, so that they can see just
the summaries together. So I borrowed some code (can't remember from
where), which was designed for expandable/collapsible menu trees, and
used it to show/hide the details of the packages.

The code works fine, but the only problem is that when you hide a
section, the page doesn't resize itself. The text underneath moves up,
but below that a huge empty space is left. The scroll bars should change
to reflect the page's new (smaller) length, but instead they stay the
same, and let you scroll through all the empty nothing at the bottom of
the page.

I've tested the page is IE6 and Firefox 0.9 - I only have this problem
in Firefox, in IE the whole page shrinks and the scroll bars change
accordingly. Any suggestions? I though maybe I need to call some
javascript function to refresh/recalculate the page - I tried using
document.normalize() straight after the section got hidden, but it
didn't help. Any other such functions that might do the trick?

Here's the code:

JQuery :: Show An Alert (or Hidden Div) When Selecting A Particular Option In A Select Element?

Jan 26, 2010

I'd like to have an alert of some type, either standard alert or a hidden div, show up when a user selects an option in a select element.

For instance, if a select element has 5 options in it and the user chooses the first one, they would get an alert that says "You have chosen the first option". I'm confident this is something that can be done with a few lines of code, but I'm not sure where to begin.

Here's the logic - I'm just not sure how to write the syntax...

If ("#select option") changes and ("#select option:eq(0):selected"), fade in the div ("alert").
