Assign Onclick Event To A Cell
May 9, 2007
I'm having troubles assigning an onclick event to a cell. Im trying
something like:
cursorPoint.cells[3].style.cursor = "hand";
cursorPoint.cells[3].width = "20";
cursorPoint.cells[3].onclick = "alert('this is a test');"
cursorPoint.cells[3].alt = "Select the columns";
cursorPoint.cells[3].innerHTML = " "
Everything is just working fine except the onclick. I also tried:
cursorPoint.cells[3].click = "alert('this is a test');" (without the
"on") but also didnt work.

I am wondering why the following works, on IE6, but with an error : "Not
implemented".
function TEST(){}
TEST.prototype.Initialize = function()
{
var mImage = new Image();
var mDate = new Date();
var start = mDate.getTime();
mImage.onload = this.Alerting(start);//WORKS with ERROR "Not implemented"
//mImage.onload = function(){this.Alerting(start);}//ERROR "Object doesn't
support this property or method"
mImage.src = "winxp.gif";
}
TEST.prototype.Alerting = function(i_string){alert(i_string);}
var mTest = new TEST();
mTest.Initialize();
Can anybody guess why?

I have written a script that gets trigered by IE's toolbar button. In
this script I would like to asign an event handler to an element of the
document currently open in IE. The way one access the document object
from a toolbar button script is:
var doc = external.menuArguments.document;
Now assuming the document has an element called TextArea1, the logical
thing to do would be:
parentwin.document.all('TextArea1').onkeypress = new
Function('window.alert('asdf');');
Which goes compiles and runs, except the event handler does not get
triggered.
Another trick i tried is as follows:
var s = parentwin.document.createElement('script');
s.text = 'window.alert('asdf')'
s.htmlFor = 'TextArea1'
s.event = 'onclick'
parentwin.document.scripts[0] = s;
Same result.

I was wondering if anyone knew if/how to assign an event to
a global variable?
I tried to do it and IE 7 came back with an error saying "Member not
found"
My code looked similar to the following:
var globalEvevnt;
function showPopup(event){
globalEvent = event;
alert(globalEvent.type);
setTimeout(function(){unhideDiv()}, 2000 );
}
function unhideDiv(){
alert(globalEvent.type); //Member not found error found on this
line
}
I was wondering if I had declared the globalEvent = new Object();
would that make any difference? I thought everything in JS was an
object so the event could be stored to one as well?

I am trying to get the value of a table cell that is generated by a php loop. The purpose is so eventually I can click a row out of a list and have it take me to a form view of the list item that is clicked. I've searched and searched for the last few days for something with no luck. I run across a lot of hits that tell me I need to have an id for everysingle thing I click on but there has to be a better way.
Code:
function test() {
var elTableRow = document.getElementById("tr");

What I am coding now is a piece of a much larger project that I am, for the moment, developing on my own. This code, relatively useless on its own, is essentially practice or proof -of-concept. Much of it will probably be used in the larger project. If at times, it seems that I am using a cannon to kill a fly, this is why.
Additionally, I do not claim credit for all the code here. Some of it is copied from other sources. I have studied it, understood it , then modified it appropriately, making it my own.
However, the code is broken. I have tested it on Internet Explorer 9.0.??? and Firefox 4.0.1. It breaks in both browsers. I have previously tested it in Chrome, but not recently. On IE I have used the built in debugger, and I have been using Firebug in Firefox. I have also used the debugger at [URL] quite frequently. JSLINT returns some 'Bad Type' errors regarding 12 lines in the html body, each having the structure: <td><input /></td>. I can find no explanation for the 'Bad Type' errors. Otherwise, according to JSLINT, the code is fine.
The predecessor to this code worked fine. I had been using inline event handlers (onblur and oninput) that called the doMath function when one enters data into the table. The values are then averaged and summed. All this is extremely basic. The problem began when I removed the inline event handlers and began to use window.onload (I believe I am using document.onload now, but the problem has not changed.)
I have adopted Douglas Crockford's 'walkTheDom' recursive function to find all tags with a particular class name. I would like to assign every element in the array returned by this function an event handler.
This is the problem: This script simply cannot find the body node of the DOM ( and, seemingly, none of its child nodes either). Initially I tried 'document.body', which failed. I then began with 'this' (essentially 'document') and tried walking the DOM to get to it ('body') eventually. This, too, failed. I tried array index notation to refer to it(I forget the specific syntax), and most recently, I've given it ('body') an id and referred to it directly using 'document.getElementById()'. These most recent attempts also failed.
After hours of figuratively bashing my head against the wall looking at code and probably even more time doing research online, I am extremely frustrated. As often seems to be the case, my problem is probably simple
I have included most of the code, even though it is a little long. This way you may easily copy the code and reproduce the problem yourself. I do not often post to forums, and, more relevant, I have no idea where the error may be located.
Potential problem areas are in RED.

I want to make it so that when I click on something, it changes what document.onclick does.
This is a simplified version of what I'm trying to do:
Code:
<div id="clickme" onclick="document.onclick = function(){ alert ('This should not be alerted on the first click'); }">Click here</div>
However, as you'll notice, the alert box shows up on the first click as well. The only way I have been able to get around this behaviour is to have the first onclick execute a timer that will then set the document.onclick after 1ms, however this seems very messy to me.

My program retrieves a table via an ajax call and places it in the ocvfitems div below. The first cell in every row is defined as: echo("<td class='tdclick'><a href='#'>$fnum</a>"); When the td is clicked I need the function to be called. It worked before I created the table via ajax. The table does display properly and the column is underlined as a href. I believe that the first line of the function is the culprit but I can't seem to get it to work.

currently on our site we have and expanding <div> that responds to both the onmouseover and onmouseout events. It works wonderfully.
The UX people now would like the expanding <div> to open with the onclick event and then as soon as the mouse leaves the expanded div, it would close. I have tried using the onmouseout event in conjunction the onclick event but it does not work (the div persists).

in a table I want to have a specific click event (calling a function) for the first cell of each row and another function call e.g. for the third table cell.I assigned different class names to these cells and used this script:$("#tab_kat tr").find(".firstCell").bind("click", function() { ... });And the same for ".thirdCell".But is this possible without assigning class names to reduce the size of the code?Something like that:$("#tab_kat tr td.cells[1]").bind("click", function() { ... });

I have this layout
And then I have this code to determine the cell height.
So basically I need both my first and last cells to be able to have the mainbody cells height, but that code only works when placed in or after the cell being measured, in this case "mainbody", my question is this, is their a way to get the size of the mainbody cell before its done loading somehow?

I have a javascript program that uses a HTML table as an Excel-like grid. The user can use arrow keys to navigation the grid. When the user selects a cell and then hits <Enter> key, the program turns the cell from read-only to editable (an input box), and select all the text in the input box. When the user hits <Esc>, the program cancels the changes that the user has made and turns the cell back to read-only. So far so good. The problem is that as soon as the user hits <Esc> key and turns the cell back to read-only, I find that I cannot move the input focus back to the cell any more. Actually I cannot move the input focus back to _any_ cell in the table. When this happens, the user cannot use arrow keys to navigate the grid any more (like the grid has lost the input focus). The user needs to use the mouse to click at a cell in the table to get things working again.
The user can get around with this problem by un-selecting the text from the input-box before hitting <Esc>. But this is not something that I expect the user to remember to do. I need a way to fix this problem. I tried the logical thing and programmatically un-select the text before turning the cell back to read-only. But this actually made thing worse - this causes the workaround to stop working.
The only browsers that I have tested this program is IE6 and IE8. I have not tested this in any other browser.
Attached is a simplified version of the program that can show this problem in action. This simplified program first adds an empty table on the web page, and then creates an instance of the CEstGrid class that takes care of the grid. CEstGrid will add two rows of test data into the table with two columns in each row. The user should use a mouse to click at one of the cell, and the cell should be highlighted. The user uses arrow keys to navigate the table. When he reaches the end of the table, he will wrap around to the other side of the table. Let say the user reaches the cell in row-1 column-2, he hits <Enter> to change the cell to editable. He will find the text in that cell to be highlighted. When he hits <Esc> at this moment, he will find that he cannot use the arrow keys to navigate the table any more, and this is the problem. Please rename the test program from .TXT to .HTML to test it.

imagine table with 15 rows and 3 columns. If I move mouse over any cell I want some other specific cells to change their borders like with pseudo-class :
example
<style>
.boryellow {border: 3px solid yellow}
.borblue {border: 3px solid black}
</style>
this will work, a cell can change itself
<td name="third" class="boryellow" onmouseover="this.className='borblue'" onmouseout="this.className='boryellow'">cell</td>
even when dealing with empty images - click on link will change border of different element - imgs, but not span or td ...
<a href="#" onclick="document.all.xxx.className='borblue'; document.all['name'].className='borblue';
[code].....
Replacing any element link by "third" or "spanx" will cause stuck ant not executing other actions.

I'm not sure what the correct term for this is, but I want to have two
objects (say HTML divs) positioned absolutely one on top of the other,
with the lower of the two having an onclick event attached to it.
Now as you can guess, if I then click on where the top and bottom object
overlap, the top object intercepts the click and the onclick event for
the bottom object is never fired.
What I want to do is to have the even "cascade" with the top object
ignoring the click and letting the bottom one handle it. Is this
possible? Am I being too vague?
