Toggle() And Session-based Cookies

Dec 6, 2004

I am using a toggle() function with <div ID="View_Right_SiteNews" STYLE="display:none"> to display/hide data. I would like to be able to have the display/hide value remembered by the end-user on a session-base duration. Here is the existing javascript that I am using: Code:

function toggle( targetId ){
if (document.getElementById){
target = document.getElementById( targetId );
if (target.style.display == "none"){
target.style.display = "";
} else {
target.style.display = "none";
} } }

I than do something like:Code:

<A HREF="javascript:toggle('view_foo');">display</A>
If anybody can get this to work with a session-based cookie that would rock!

I would also go for setting a PHP session if session-based cookies won't work out. I just don't know how to do that either.

Session Cookies Not Working With Vista?

Session Cookies Being Deleted Without Being Coded To Do So

Jan 3, 2011

Aside from using code to delete a JavaScript session cookie, what can arbitrarily overwrite/delete a JavaScript session cookie?

I ask because I have something that is working flawlessly in development; but as soon as it's moved into a staging area for testing, it stops working.

My initial thought was that there is something causing the browser to think that it's being redirected to another domain, thereby deleting the session. But further testing indicates this is not the case.

Basically put, I have a detail page for clients that contains nine categories; all categories are loaded in an "expanded" state (shows all information for each category) and has a "hide" link next to the header. Click "hide" and the whole category collapses, and the link becomes "expand"; click "expand" and vice-a-versa.

Also on initial page load, the document looks for a session cookie called "vddstatus"; if it does not exist, it creates the session cookie with default values set so that all categories are expanded; if it does exist, it checks the values and adjusts the expanded/hidden status as needed. This way, no matter what page you go to, when you come back to the details page, it remembers the expanded/hidden status of each category.

Like I said, on the development server it works excellently; in the staging environment, the only time it remembers the category statuses is if you click "HIDE ALL"; anything else it apparently deletes the session cookie and generates a new one, set to all categories expanded.

Deny Based On Cookies.

Oct 8, 2005

I'd like to be able to check the cookies of visiters for certain values and block access to my site based on that. Lets say the cookie is called "somesite_username" from another site. I'd like some code to say 'Hey, does this visitor have a cookie named "somesite_username" set? if so.. is the value set at this, this, or this? If so - deny access to the site and log their IP address here'. (so I can add it to IP Deny later)

Is that very difficult?

Reading Txt File And Setting Cookies Based On The Words?

Jan 19, 2010

Is there a way to use Javascript to read a txt file, take all the words in the txt file one by one, then create a cookie out of each of them? Ideally, I'm also looking to create a prompt which asks the user if they want to set the cookie each time.The purpose of this is that I'm looking to create some basic browser based games (with information stored in txt files), so it doesn't have to be a script which works online. Everything is just run offline. If it makes a difference, it can also be, say, a doc file rather than a txt.I understand the idea of using activeX & IE to read the txt file, and after looking through this forum, I have found a way to load the entire txt into a form. I have not been able to advance my idea beyond that however.I've used Javascript before many times for webpages, but it generally comes down to me copying and pasting code, then just changing a few keys words. What I'm quickly trying to say there is that I can use js, but I'm not that much of an expert.

JQuery :: Toggle Based On Default Form Values?

Sep 26, 2010

I have a form that gets automatically filled based on the values returned by my php file. Then the form elements have their values filled.

Now the problem is, I have set few additional show and hide <div> tags based on the values of some other fields. So when the form loads, the <div> tag doesnt show up and stays hidden only as the event that activates it is based on the radio button's change event function.

So my question is, as the form loads, how can I have these <div> show/hide based on the default values of the text fields on which they depend upon....

jQuery(document).ready( function()
{
jQuery(".hidden, .error").hide();
//

This only gets activated when the radio button is changed but i want this to be checked on change as well as based on initial values... How do I do that ?

jQuery( jQuery("input[name='ssc_appear']") ).change
( function()
{
if ( jQuery("input[name='ssc_appear']:checked" ).val() == "yes" )

JQuery :: Toggle Visibility Of Textbox Based On Status Of Checkbox

Dec 8, 2010

This is using jquery by the way. I have a list of ethnicity on a form for a person to enter that are checkboxes. One option is 'Other, specify'. When 'other specify' is checked, I would like a text box to pop up and disable the other boxes (if you pick other, you can't pick from the previous ethnicities). If 'other, specify' is unchecked, I would like for the text box to disappear and re-enable the checkboxes. I had the appearing box working just using JS. I can't seem to get the syntax right to use the toggle feature of jquery to make the box disappear when unclicked.

JQUERY
<script type="text/javascript">
$(function(){
$('#other').click(function(){
$('#otherrace').toggle(
function(event) {
$(event.target).css('visible');
},
function(event) {
$(event.target).css('hidden');
});});
</script>

HTML
<input type="checkbox" name="race" value="asian" />Asian<br />
<input type="checkbox" name="race" value="hawaii" />Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander<br />
<input type="checkbox" name="race" value="noanswer" />Choose not to answer<br />
<input type="checkbox" name="race" id="other"value="other" />Other, specify<br />
<div style="visibility:hidden" id="race"><input type="text" name="fname" size="25" maxlength="25" id="otherrace" /></div>

Toggle State - Trigger Open State From Id Based URL?

Jul 21, 2011

To say I'm new to JavaScript is a bit of an understatement so bear with me. I have a site set up with a variety of layers of toggles. When you enter the site all of the items are collapsed and you click the headings to expand. Each of the toggle-able items have ids. It works great for users who start at the homepage.

However, when I send people to any of the inner topics, all they see is the initial collapsed state of the site. I want to be able to provide a URL that will set the toggle to open, and show all of the content for that section on entry.

Here is my code and js, can anyone point me in the right direction?

Toggle Div, Loading Content Externally On Toggle

Sep 1, 2011

here is my scenario:

I have a link and a div on a webpage. With the link I want to toggle the content (HTML) of the div. On toggle, I want to load the content from a PHP-file and I want it to load on the toggle, not when the webpage originally loaded (to reduce loading time on the webpage itself).

The file that is loaded on toggle doesn't have to be PHP, but it would help a lot.

AJAX And Session

I first load a page with a session genterated. But since AJAX is a

can write the session id into the first page where I made ajax calls, it is not a secure way...

Getting Session-variables To PHP

Nov 29, 2009

I'm just beginning with JavaScript (and Ajax). My loginscript now works with Ajax - that is; the script is sending a request to the servers PHP script to check username and password, but I wonder what that script should return - and how to use that response. Either XML or pure text: The response is now "false" if the user couldn't log in for some reason, and the users ID and real name if the login went well...

But then the problem: if login IS ok - so that the users ID and real name is returned from the serverscript - I would like to store those variables in a session variable ($_SESSION in PHP). How do I get those variables back to the client script from JavaScript?

Session Variables And Arrays

Jun 28, 2007

I had written code which created a shopping cart into an array using
vbscript and then transferred the information into a session
variable. However what I didn't know was that deleting/manipulating
information in an array using vbscript was not that easy.

In doing some reading and research it seemed that js was more flexible
in this area. My questions:

1) if I want to store cart items/details in an array and session
variable do I need to use only js (and can not switch back and forth
from vbscript and js)

2) if I have an array 6x12 and want to delete all the items
associated with say arrayItem[1, 0...12] what is the proper coding to
delete...is it splice?

3) any good articles about js, arrays, and multidimensional arrays
for a beginner?

Session Cookie Not Ending In IE

Jun 28, 2006

Cookie name is "viewStatus" value saved is 1

Closing all windows should end the session but on the reopening cookie page I find the session cookie is still alive.

If I alert(document.cookie) I get viewStatus = 1

If I rename the cookie to say "vStatus" and close the window when I reopen it and alert(document.cookie) I get

viewstatus=1 vStatus=1

any ideas?

This only happens in IE ( as always)

PS

I just did a little experiment, I closed all windows, created a new file with just

<script>
alert(document.cookie)
</script>

in it then opened the file and still got

viewstatus=1 vStatus=1

I know I did not have this problem before because I have a session cookie example on my site and that does not work now so is it something new that is wrong with IE.
