Returned Type Of -this- From String.prototype.repeat()
May 10, 2006
I wrote a .repeat(n) function for strings which seemed to work fine:
String.prototype.repeat = function(n) {
// repeats the string n times
if (n<1) return "";
if (n<2) return this;
for (var aStr = [this];--n>0;) aStr.push(aStr[0]);
return aStr.join("");
}
Only I was a little surprised to get "object" (instead of "string")
when I tried:
alert (typeof ("x".repeat(1)));
I fixed this by modifying ...
if (n<2) return this+"";

I am doing a few tests with javascript and oop. but one failed so i falled back to the way i usually do this but it still isnt working properly. i am using $.post() but instead of returning whatever is echoed in the php file like it does with all my other scripts it returns the content of the file:
Isnt returned in var data but the whole file is returned as a string.

Simple ajax call seems to have some issues in Firefox. The "onComplete:" is
called BEFORE the response is returned by the call. Is there a coding issue
or a work around?
var ajax = new Ajax.Request( url, {method: 'post', parameters: params,
onComplete: evalInfo });
function evalInfo( request )
{
// do stuff with request
}
Should I have a timer that checks the request state before exec the
evalInfo?

Through an AJAX implementation, I am receiving a SQL Query result that has:An object's attribute delimited by a comma.An entire object (database row) delimited by a colon.This is an example response to make it more clear for you.
1,Jeremy,130,80;2,Lauren,370,300;3,Jeancarlos,200,200;4,Luke,330,70;5,Bloom,392,108;
What I am trying to achieve is placing all of this data into an array. I've set up a little test bed to try and get this to work; this is all I have so far:
var testString = "1,Jeremy,130,80;2,Lauren,370,300;3,Jeancarlos,200,200;4,Luke,330,70;5,Bloom,392,108";
var testArray = new Array();
testArray = testString.split(";");[code]....
get a multi-dimensional array that has information for each person. Example:
FinalArray[0][0] = 1
FinalArray[0][1] = Jeremy
FinalArray[0][2] = 130

I have to do something that looks an easy task, but I can't do it.I have a page with a div and an id= "livetimings" assigned to it, I want to show a table inside that div and update it every 20 seconds.I have a php script which prints the table and it works, I've tried that script by itself, now I'm trying to call it through an AJAX call in this way [code]inside the <body> tag I've put a setInterval() which starts the getTempi() every 20 seconds and it also works.The not working part is that nothing appears inside the div.I've put some alerts inside the JS code all of them before the req.open pop up, then nothing, so I think the problem is there, but I don't get it.script.php is in the same folder of the html page.The php script has an echo at the end which prints the html code for the table.

I extended the string prototype with the following.
String.prototype.equalTo = function( str )
{
return this.toLowerCase() === str.toLowerCase();
}
I'm worried about special characters and double byte characters.what I should be looking out for? or doing?

I couldn't find a single thread with the creme de la creme of String prototype extension methods, so I figured I'd start one. Here we go!
String.prototype.lTrim = function () {
return this.replace(/^s+/gm, "");
}
String.prototype.rTrim = function () {
return this.replace(/s+$/gm, "");
}
String.prototype.trim = function () {
return this.rTrim().lTrim();
}Obviously, this one's easy to understand. I'm using multi-line mode so as only to get rid of spaces and tabs before and after words. Single-line mode would replace any newline/carriage return characters as well.
String.prototype.capitalize = function () {
return this.replace(/[a-z]/g, function (str, n) { return str.toUpperCase(); });
}
String.prototype.toCamelCase = function () {
return this.replace(/s[a-z]/g, function (str, n) { return str.toUpperCase(); });
}
String.prototype.unCamelCase = function () {
return this.replace(/[A-Z]/g, function (str, n) { return " " + str.toUpperCase(); });
}This is something I needed today, to turn a camelCased variable value into its Header Format. While I was at it, I wrote the un-do-er.

How can I avoid type-conversion (object variable --> string) when
passing an object variable to a function?
Example:
-->
catch(myerrorobject)
alert(myerrorobject.filename);
{
my_function('bla: ',myerrorobject);
}
<---
I get the "myerrorobject.filename" in the alert-Box, but I get an
"undefined"-error, if I try to access myerrorobject.filename (or other
properties) in the function "my_function". Why?

Let me preface this with the usual disclaimer: I am new to this and have only been programming with Javascript, PHP for about 2 weeks now and have been lucky enough to have resolved the issues I have encountered. This one however is puzzling to me.
I have a HTML form created that collects member information. It calls, on submit, a confirmation page that lists all the data fields entered. This all works great. However, when I then post the variables from the first html form page from my second confirmation html page to my PHP script, using document.write with input type=hidden and inserting the address variable into the value field, the Javascript only passes this variable up to the first space. It is the only variable I pass that has a space in it.
I have verified that the variable does indeed contain the whole address and I have also verified when I execute the following: document.write ('<input type="hidden" name="address1" value='+address_1+'>');
the address_1 parameter passed to the php script only passes the string up to the first space.
I even tried to put fixed text in there instead of a variable (e.g.)
document.write ('<input type="hidden" name="address1" value="555 Drury Lane" >');
and it still only passes the string up to the first space (555).
I show the variable address_1 on my confirmation page and it shows the entire string.
I checked what was being passed and it seems that the Javascript is the culprit (or more likely the Javascript creator - me)
All my other variables (which don't have spaces) pass to the php script with no problems.

According to ECMAScript, the root of the prototype chain is Object.Prototype. Each object has an internal property [[Prototype]] that could be another object or NULL.... However, it also says that every function has the Function prototype object: Function.Prototype, it confused me, because a function is an object, for a function object, what is its function prototype and object prototype..For example:
var x = function (n) {return n+1;};
what is the relationships of x, Object.Prototype and Function.Prototype

I am trying to get to the bottom of javascript object, prototypes etc. I have a fairly good grasp of it, but I get confused the closer I get to the base object.prototype. FIrst of all, I was under the impression that all objects descend directly from Object. But some objects (like Array) seem to inherit properties and methods from the function.prototype. So does this mean that the chain is like this:
object -- function -- array Second, I noticed (on the mozilla javascript reference site that object.prototype inherits properties and methods from function.prototype and vice versa!? How can this be? I must be missing something important about understanding the chain?

background-repeat: repeat-x works fine in IE and FF and as expected,
produces something like
............
hello
............
On Safari, the output is not what is desired.
||||||||||||||........
|||h|e|l|l|o||
||||||||||||||........
Is there a reason why this would happen?

Can someone point me to some resources on how to tile an image to create a
border?
<td><img src="images/MTile.png" width="1" height="30" alt=""></td>
I have something like that where I need to repeat x times where x depends on
the width of the browser. (Not sure if its a good idea to use a bitmap of
width 1 but I could use one that is larger and then use both(e.g., maybe one
that is 10 pixels wide and repeat that as needed and let the 1 pixel wide
one get the rest(I have some "ends" on the border that I need to display too
so it sorta needs to be exact))
Not sure how to do this with js(just learning it) but obviously I just need
to get the width of the border and then figure out how many times I need to
repeat the code.
I have several issues I am wondering about though. First off is that I have
used photoshop imageready to create a roll over menu bar but in firefox when
I use the down state it leaves a selection rectangle around the image but in
IE it does not do this. It does not look nice in firefox and I'm sure there
is some way to prevent it. (for some reason it selects it when you click the
menu item and this probably can be turned off using css?)
Another issue, which isn't a big deal, is that I'm using symmetric bitmaps
to "cap" the border. I was wondering if it is possible to flip the image
using html or js so that I don't have to have a seperate image for it?

I'm making a website at [URL].. and I'm trying to create a menu using Jquery 1.3.2. Anyways, if you look at the tabs in my header, they have an effect but it only works once. After I mouse over the same tab a second time, they do not animate. I also have a similar menu at [URL].. You may notice the second menu also will fade to a darker gray. If i copy and past that code into my drupal block, it will still only animate one time. Do i need to include something extra because its version 1.3.2??? I also have another Jquery plugin below the header which is called a S3SLIDER. I'm not calling the jquery script up more than once.Here's the code for the Jquery menu at adc-design.com:
