I'd like to read and modify a cell (e.g. 'Text 1') in the following HTML table with a javascript:
==============================================
<html>
<body>
<table id = "MyTable">
<tr id = "Row1">
<td width = "40%">
Text 1
</td>
<td width = "60%">
Text 2
</td>
</tr>
</table>
</body>
</html>
==============================================
With
var table = document.getElementById("MyTable");
I can access the table and with
... table.rows[var_tabelle.rows.length - 1].firstChild
I can somehow access the row. But I can't read and also not change the
content.

I'm pretty new in Javascript. I searched alot but didn't find any answer to my problem I have.
What I want to do:
- I have a cell A1
- I want the script to make a new cell B1
- After that I want the script to make a new cell C1
- After that I want the script to make a new cell D1
- After that I wa .... etc .... till I got 20 cells in total.
This has to go automatic so not by use of a client sided button.
I also need every cell to get his own IDnumber like A1 ID=1, B1 ID=2, C1 ID=3, etc to communicate with database and mysql. But maybe I have to use php for that.

I've created a table in HTML but I need to specify the cell width client side. I need to loop through the cells and set the size based on the rendered size of some other elements.
I'm using the following doctype <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
This is causing me problems in Firefox. The width attribute is being set correctly but the actual table cells aren't being resized. Has anybody seen this before and does anybody have a workaround?

How can I use jquery to cycle through all the table rows I have in a table, and hide the rows that contain a specific HTML value that I pass to jquery?For instance, I have a table full of students, and courses each student is taking. If I want to hide all the rows where the course is Chemistry (regardless of student), how would I do that?I already have captured the HTML value, what I mainly need help with is how to tell jquery to hide ALL of the rows with that HTML value, rather than just the row I click on.

I´m trying to place a javascript navigation menu inside a cell of
a table in my page, the problem is that the constructor of the menu
object has parameters for menu positioning and size and when the
window is rezised the menu stands at the same position and with the
same size.
My question is: is there a way to modify those parameters
dinamically to match window size, and how is that made, or is there
another way to include that menu using a table for page layout.

I'm trying to be tricky and its not been working LOL. I have a gallery page with lots of thumbnails that load up. What I wanted to do was have a "LOADING IMAGE" GIF in each of the table cells so that the user would see visually how many more images were going to load up. That bit is fine but when all the thumbs have loaded I want to change that Cell background image to something else.
How would I do this? Would I be able to reference them all at once or would I have to reference each individual cell one at a time.
To better illustrate my point see this this link :

I'm new to javascript, but I need help and really hoping for a reply. I was trying to find an answer in Google but no result. So I have two table containing images, at the beginning only first table is displayed. Then when one of the images in the first table is clicked, a second table should appear, and user should click one of the images on that table. And that image should replace the one that was clicked originally in the first table.
So the question is, when the user clicks an image in the second table, how do I know what was originally clicked in the first one? I tried to use global variable but that doesn't work.

And then I have this code to determine the cell height.
So basically I need both my first and last cells to be able to have the mainbody cells height, but that code only works when placed in or after the cell being measured, in this case "mainbody", my question is this, is their a way to get the size of the mainbody cell before its done loading somehow?

I have a javascript program that uses a HTML table as an Excel-like grid. The user can use arrow keys to navigation the grid. When the user selects a cell and then hits <Enter> key, the program turns the cell from read-only to editable (an input box), and select all the text in the input box. When the user hits <Esc>, the program cancels the changes that the user has made and turns the cell back to read-only. So far so good. The problem is that as soon as the user hits <Esc> key and turns the cell back to read-only, I find that I cannot move the input focus back to the cell any more. Actually I cannot move the input focus back to _any_ cell in the table. When this happens, the user cannot use arrow keys to navigate the grid any more (like the grid has lost the input focus). The user needs to use the mouse to click at a cell in the table to get things working again.
The user can get around with this problem by un-selecting the text from the input-box before hitting <Esc>. But this is not something that I expect the user to remember to do. I need a way to fix this problem. I tried the logical thing and programmatically un-select the text before turning the cell back to read-only. But this actually made thing worse - this causes the workaround to stop working.
The only browsers that I have tested this program is IE6 and IE8. I have not tested this in any other browser.
Attached is a simplified version of the program that can show this problem in action. This simplified program first adds an empty table on the web page, and then creates an instance of the CEstGrid class that takes care of the grid. CEstGrid will add two rows of test data into the table with two columns in each row. The user should use a mouse to click at one of the cell, and the cell should be highlighted. The user uses arrow keys to navigate the table. When he reaches the end of the table, he will wrap around to the other side of the table. Let say the user reaches the cell in row-1 column-2, he hits <Enter> to change the cell to editable. He will find the text in that cell to be highlighted. When he hits <Esc> at this moment, he will find that he cannot use the arrow keys to navigate the table any more, and this is the problem. Please rename the test program from .TXT to .HTML to test it.

I have the following issue - if a user select 'select box' as a value in a drop-down list, a new window is opened where they can enter values then they should click on a button and a text thay have typed should pass to a hidden field in the parent window.
How do I do this? I tried this (child window)
<html>
<head>
<title>Values</title>
</head>
<body BgColor = "#FFFFFF">
<form name = "f1">
<textarea name = "ta"></textarea><br />
<input type = "button" value = "Ok" onClick = "getValues ();" />
</form>
<script language = "JavaScript">
function getValues ()
{
window.alert ( document.f1.ta.value );
parent.aff.vals.value = document.f1.ta.value;
}
</script>
</body>
</html>
But unfortuanelly it's not working!

imagine table with 15 rows and 3 columns. If I move mouse over any cell I want some other specific cells to change their borders like with pseudo-class :
example
<style>
.boryellow {border: 3px solid yellow}
.borblue {border: 3px solid black}
</style>
this will work, a cell can change itself
<td name="third" class="boryellow" onmouseover="this.className='borblue'" onmouseout="this.className='boryellow'">cell</td>
even when dealing with empty images - click on link will change border of different element - imgs, but not span or td ...
<a href="#" onclick="document.all.xxx.className='borblue'; document.all['name'].className='borblue';
[code].....
Replacing any element link by "third" or "spanx" will cause stuck ant not executing other actions.

I am confused about the true difference between the two below examples.
first example:
// Demonstrating a problem with closures and loops
var myArray = [“Apple”, “Car”, “Tree”, “Castle”];
var closureArray = new Array();
[code]....
Here we iterate through the length of myArray, assigning the current index of myArray to theItem variable. We declare closureArray 4 times as an anonymous function. The anonymous function in turn declares the predefined write() function, which is passed parameters. Since write() is in closureArray() a closure is created??? During each iteration, theItem is reassigned its value. The four closures reference this value. Since they reference this same value and since this value is reassigned ultimately to the value of the fourth index position, tHe time we execute closureArray later on, all four closures output the same string. This is because all four closures are within the same scope "the same environment" and therefore are referencing the same local variable, which has changed.
I have a couple of problems with this example:
1) I thought a closure is a function that is returned - the inner function is not returned above.
2) theItem is not even a local variable of the parent function (closureArray) - I thought in order for a closure to work, the inner function only accesses the local variables of the outer function, but in this case the local variable is defined OUTSIDE of the parent function.
3) the "the four closures are sharing the same environment." The thing is even in the second example, they are sharing the same environment.
Second example:
// A correct use of closures within loops
var myArray = [“Apple”, “Car”, “Tree”, “Castle”];
var closureArray = new Array();
[code]....
Here we iterate over the length of myArray (4 times), assigning the index of myArray to theItem variable. We also return a function reference to the closureArray during each iteration (closureArray[i]), where i is index number so we assign 4 functon references. So when we iterate through myArray, we immediatelly call the writeItem() fucntion passing an argument of theItem at its current value. This returns a child anonymous function and when that child function is called, it will execute a block that calls the predefined write() method. We assign that returned anonymous function to the variable closureArray. Hence, closureArray holds a reference to that anonymous function. So closureArray during each iteration holds a reference to the anonymous function and we later call closureArray, which in turn calls the anonymous function, therefore calling the predefined write() function to output the local variable of the parent function. This outputs each distinct index of myArray.
This is because since we created the closure, when we call writeItem, passing theItem argument, since theItem is a local variable of the parent function of the closure, it is never destroyed when we later call closureArray (the reference to the child anonymous function)? Yet weren't we using a closure in the first example as well? So whey wasn't those variables preserved?
I don't think it has anything to do with assigning a returned anonymous function to closureArray. Even though an anonymous function creates a new memory position in the javascript engine, therefore not overwriting the other function references we create during the iteration, it's still referring to a local variable declared outside the reference. So if it's about the closure retaining value of parent's local variable even after exiting the parent function allowing for the current indexes to be preserved, then why did the closure in the first example fail to retain each index?

I am creating a job ticket object that will interact with a database. It has to update the database on the fly via AJAX. Within the job ticket object, I have instances of a Component Object. Within the Component Object, I have an instance of an Editor Object. One of the methods of the Editor object is a function to edit some text and when it's submitted, it will update the database. All of that is working fine. My problem is that I need to refresh the screen with the new contents of the database. I have a method in the Component Object that refreshes the screen, but how do I call it from within the Editor Object? I believe it has to be called there because the editor object has a handler for the form submission and the AJAX function. So I'll have to reference a callback function once the AJAX request is handled, but I don't know how to call it.
I know that sounds kind of convoluted, so hopefully, this very simplified code will paint a better picture of what I'm trying to do:
Code:
Now I want to call refreshScreen, but I don't know how:

I'm working on some code and am running into brick walls. I'm trying
to write out Javascript with Javascript and I've read the clj Meta FAQ
and didn't see the answer, read many similar posts (with no luck
though), and searched through the IRT.ORG Faqs
(www.irt.org/script/script.htm).
The Javascript is designed to open an popup window and then inside that
window call another script which will resize that window. There may be
another way around this but the reason I tried this approach initially
was that I wanted to call the onload handler in the popup window to
resize the image only after the image had completely loaded. I've had
some code in the primary Javascript file (showimage.js) before that
works if the image has been cached but on the first load, it doesn't
resize properly which tells me it is probably because it is trying to
resize the window based on the image size but it isn't completely known
at that point. So I removed that code and tried placing the resizing
code in the second Javascript file (resizewindow.js). BTW I've tried
other code to open a popup image and automatically size it ie Q1443 at
irt.org but that doesn't do exactly what we need.
Even if there is another way to do this with one file, I still want to
figure out why this isn't working in case I run into it in the future.
I thought what I would need to do to use document.writeln to write
Javascript would be to escape any special characters and to break
apart the script tag ie
document.writeln('</SCRIPT>');
would become
document.writeln('</SCR' + 'IPT>');
I have a HTML page and 2 Javascript files. All files are in the same
directory and have permissions set correctly.
Here are the 3 files (keep in mind wordwrap has jacked up the
formatting):
index.html
----------
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN">
<html>
<head>
<title>Test</title>
<SCRIPT type="text/javascript" LANGUAGE="JavaScript1.1"
SRC="showimage.js">
</SCRIPT>
</head>
<body>
Click the house<BR>
<A ONCLICK="newWindow1('house1.jpg','Nice House')"><IMG
SRC="house1thumb.jpg"></A>
</body>
</html>
showimage.js
------------
function newWindow1(pic,sitename)
{
picWindow=window.open('','','width=25,height=25,sc rollbars=1,resizable=1');
picWindow.document.writeln('<html> <head>');
picWindow.document.writeln('<SCR' + 'IPT type="text/javascript"
LANGUAGE="JavaScript1.1" SRC="resizewindow.js"></SCR' + 'IPT>');
picWindow.document.writeln('</head>');
picWindow.document.writeln('<body onload="resizewindow();">');
picWindow.document.writeln('<img src=' + pic + '>');
picWindow.document.writeln('</body> </html>');
picWindow.document.close();
}
resizewindow.js
---------------
function resizewindow()
{
// Do resizing here.
// Right now this isn't being executed
alert("resizing window");
}
Can anyone provide some pointers as to why this javascript is failing?
I'm using IE6 on Win2k and when I click on the image to open the popup
window, it does open the window but it is white with no content and the
system immediately goes from about 4% CPU usage to 100% and
consistently stays there until I kill that window with the task
manager.

I need to create an interactive map similar to the one on this site: [url]
It is a map of a fictional area ( a real area but there are fictional buildings and characters on it) so I don't think google maps plugins are suitable.
In other words, I need a map where by clicking the objects on the map, a popup window pops up with additional information about the 'scene' or a 'character'.
In addition, the map will be dark from the beginning and more and more sites and characters will be revealed on it every week.

Has anyone implemented an interactive map using jquery? The general idea is that when the user hovers over a bullet on a selected city, it would bring up a lightbox type of thing, which would have multiple images in the lightbox which the user can then select and link to a seperate page depending on which image they clicked. Would this be possible using jquery or would javascript be required?
