Using The DOM To Affect A Form Element's Label
Aug 7, 2004
I have a form that is validated using the DOM. If a user attempts to submit this form before completing all required fields the fields turn red. The only drawback to this is the reading the text in the fields can become difficult. One thing I was hoping to do was to have the text associated with each form element turn red insteadof the field.
Each form element's text is enclosed in a <label> tag and I figure setting that tag's font color to red would be easy enough to do...if I knew how to reference it. That's the thing, I'm not sure how to reference it.

This is pretty simple, but if you've ever wished that the DOM exposed a label property for any form element that had a label specified for it, well, you'll enjoy this.
{
var labels = f.getElementsByTagName( "label" );
for ( var i = 0; ( label = labels[i] ); i++ )
f.elements[label.htmlFor].label = label;
}
Just pass it a reference your form and voila! You now have element.label.

I would like to ask if the following is possible.
1) I have one hundred identical links on my page
2) I have a function that changes a clicked link to "display: none" (using the toggle functioon)
Is it possible for me to set it up so that only the link that is clicked (that is, only one element) gets affected? I don't want to click and have all the links disappear.. just the one that was clicked.Would this code below work in all browsers? [code] And secondly, may I ask whats the difference between $("a") and $('a'). I've seen people use single quotation makrs and double. Which is better ??

How can I make an image label that when I clicked will change from one label to another.
Let say I have index.html where my label is displayed. Then I have label01.jpg to label20.jpg stored on label sub folder.
What I want is to be able to change my label one at a time from label01.jpg to label20.jpg everytime i click the label. then go back to label01.jpg after label20.jpg
For illustration purpose, see image below. I want the label to change every click until I got the label right for the video screen. I have 20 video screen in one page and I need to change the labels depending on the video.
Actually a more preferred solution is for the script to cycle through all the pictures on my label folder so that if I have new labels I only need to dump it in the folder and it will become available.

I'm using this to add a label to a form. I'm adding new form inputs so the user can add links:
var obj = document.createElement("label");
obj.setAttribute("for", "link"); //this seems not to work in IE6
var myText = document.createTextNode("Label name");
obj.appendChild(myText);
document.getElementById("Links").appendChild(obj); //there's a void div called "Links" in the html
obj = document.createElement("input");
obj.setAttribute("type", "text");
obj.setAttribute("name", "link");
obj.setAttribute("id", "link");
In the html I use a link that calls the function to add dynamically the input and label.
It's working ok in Firefox... I mean, when you click on the label, the input get the focus (just as a normal html label tag).
But it does not work in IE6... Does anybody knows if there's some change to make it work in IE6?

How do I do this? I have ~200 labels on a page and want them all set to .style.fontWeight = 'normal';.
How can I cycle through them all without typing 200 lines of each label name?

I have a form and inside the text fields I have a note that indicates: Type here your name...all this instead of having titles for each field. That text is set as initial value and the user has to highlight the text to delete it. What I am wondering is if there is a way to have the text but when the user clicks on the Field the text disappears and there is no need for deleting. I have seen this before but I can recall where.

I need to be able to determine what form control a label is associated with from within a script. Normally I'd access properties of items by name, like thisLink.href, or thisControl.value, but you can't do thisLabel.for becauce for is a javascript keyword. Does anyone know how to get around this problem?

Say I have script that looks a bit like this:
Array.prototype.getValue = function(ind, dir) {
if (dir !=0) ind[ind.length-1] += dir;
// more script
}
screens = [...// a big array
fnd = [1,2,3];
// 1.
a = findStart(fnd);
// 2.
b = findEnd(fnd);
findStart = function(cs) {
return screens.getValue(cs, 1);
}
findEnd = function(cs) {
return screens.getValue(cs, -1)
}
As I go from 1. to 2. the value of fnd changes. I don't understand how a
locally scoped variable might be affecting a global one.

I don't know how to select an element inside other elements, like div's. I have my html site like this:
<div id="container">
<div id="top"><h3>Title</h3</div>
<div class="desc">
Lorem Ipsum dolor set...
</div></div>
<div id="container">
<div id="top"><h3>Title</h3</div>
<div class="desc">
Lorem Ipsum dolor set...
</div></div>...so on...
I want to click on any h3-tag and the jquery should open the next div with class desc. At the moment I use this script:
$(document).ready(function(){
$('.desc').hide();
$('h3').click(function() {
$(this).next('.desc').toggle(400);
return false;
});
});
I absolutly dont know what to change inside the script to affect the next div with class desc.

I need a JavaScript script to only affect a certain section of my page. Is it possible that I could put that part of my page in a DIV or a FRAME to get this to work? How would I do this?
Here is my script:
As you can see, that would choose a random link from my entire page. If I want to make it choose from a section of my page, what would I do? (there are a lot of links on this page, and I don't want to assign number to each and every one of them, and then choose a random number)

[code]I'd like to click FirstDrilldown and have it display div#SecondDrilldown. Then I'd like to be able to click SecondDrilldown to fire off a different click handler. The problem is that the click handler bound to the FirstDrilldown intercepts the click. I'm fairly sure I could bind and unbind the click FirstDrilldown click event but that's kind of an inelegant solution.Is there just a way to just promote the SecondDrilldown click event to have a greater precedence than the one associated with FirstDrilldown?

I'm developing a site in HTML 5 and SVG, just for the heck of it. I have a portion of the site that uses the <embed> tag to load a new SVG when you change pages, which, in theory, would let me do effects between pages. However, no matter what I try, there is a white flash as the new SVG is loaded into the page. So, I figured I would make the embedded area invisible until it loaded, which was no big deal. But when I tried it, the flash still happened! So, I built a pause function to wait a bit longer. It sill flashes. Anyway, 7 hours later, I've determined that the newly embedded page isn't actually being downloaded and embedded until the end of the changePage() function is reached.
Here's my java script:
var close1;
var close2;
var bar;
var svgLoaded = false;

Not a huge issue, more of an annoyance, but when firing
Code:
Effect.Appear('whatever');
it only works when
Code:
display:block;
is an inline style on the target element and not when it's applied via an external style sheet. Is there a fix for this or is it just a quirk of the library?

When an image is clicked on, the new text should slide down covering the default text. When another image is clicked on that text should slide down and cover the previous image's text.Right now the script only allows a vertical display of the images and I can't put the sliding text in a specific place.Here is the CSS

was wondering if it made sense to optimize the comparison order inside an if() statement if one of the comparison targets is a function call eg:
var a = true,
b = function() {return false;};
if (b() || a) {...}
if (a || b()) {...}
would the second statement run faster because it would theoretically never need to call b() in this situation? can the eval order be relied on? does this depend on the js engine/internal optimizations?

I am trying to put together a proof of concept. What I am trying to prove is that a back button affect can be accomplished using DHTML and an IFrame. Here is the concept, as the user changes data, that data can be written to an IFrame. Then, when the user hits the back button, contents can be taken from the IFrame using history.back() since the IFrame should remember the content written to it just like a page would.
Here is my problem. The below code writes the content entered into the text box into the IFrame. But when I click the button to execute the history.back(), the value returned is undefined.
I think my problem might be that the code which writes the contents of the text box to the IFrame is doing that dynamically, so the page is not caching it. If this is correct, how can I write the dynamically entered content from the text box to the IFrame so it can be cached by the IFrame window? Code:

I've been struggling trying to get a small order form to work the way I want it to. Here is a link to the live page: [URL] And here is the code in question:
[Code]...
I have two questions...
Question 1 How can I make this piece of script act a little smarter. Look at the order form, I'm catering for up to 4 people and providing lunch for them. If they select 3 people and the spaghetti bol for lunch, it's only adding $10 where it should be adding $30. Obviously this is simple multiplication but since the values in my form are prices it makes it a little tricky. I'm guessing an onselect on the first part of the form which changes the pricing of the other items would be the way to go, but how do I do this?
Question 2 The "Total Price" is placed before the <form> tag by the script. This is ok but it's not where I want it. How can I position this text elsewhere in the document?

I need to pass user input from a form to one database field. I'm relatively new to JS but the idea I had was to have several form elements and use JS to collect the users input and send all the values through a hidden element. What's happening is the variable names are being sent rather than the values. The code below is only passing to the next page. Limitations: I am editing an intranet site built by a 3rd party so a lot of the files we've been given are encrypted. I cannot change the method to post.

I've put together what I think is an illustration of my problem at [URL] Quite simply, I need to be able to access the elements of the form without referring to them by ID as the whole form is intended to be cloned. I intended to do this using parentNode and childNodes[] together with the 'this' keyword. My understanding of 'this' in this context is that it should refer to the HTML element calling the function, i.e. one of the radio button inputs. However this gives the error "Error: this.parentNode is undefined"

I have a grid that I'm adding rows to that include form text input boxes using addRowData. I know I can use the "editable:true" for that but I'd rather not at this time. Anyway I have the <div id=list1></div> surrounded by a <form></form>. Also statically I have a couple of text input boxes and a submit button. When I press the submit button the only parameters that show up in the POSTED data are the static ones. Is there a way to get the form elements "registered" with the form? I know I can always use javascript to extract the data and save it via an ajax call, but if there is a way to do it "correctly"
Example
var myRow = {id:"0",call:"<input name='callt"+boxNo+"' id='call"+boxNo+"' class='calls' type='text'/>",amount:"<input name='amt"+boxNo+"' id='amt"+boxNo+"' type='text' value='"+defaultDep+"'/>",residual:"",calculate:"<input type='button' class='buttons' id='b"+boxNo+"'/>"};
$("#list1").addRowData(boxNo,myRow);
