Show And Hide Form Fields?
Mar 23, 2011
I have a drop down selection where it shows and hides form inputs depending on selection. When the page loads it shows the drop down selections with no form inputs. After user selects drop down it shows the form fields. It works great but I want it to show the same form fields after the user hits the submit button which submits the page to itself. It currenlty goes back to the default selection list and doesnt show any of the form fields. Basically it hides all the form fields after the user hits submit button. How do I make it keep the last shown form fields after the user hits the submit button?
test3.html looks like this:
<html>
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
<title>Show/Hide</title>
<script type="text/javascript">

I'm trying to get the two followup questions underneath the checkbox to show up only if someone places a check there, but for some reason the way I've got it set up now it's simply hiding the area I want to show up altogether, and the checkbox has no effect on it.
Rather than waste tons of space pasting it here, here's the pastebin: [url]
Alternatively here is the live version:[url]
I'd prefer to have the form collapse when the additional questions are hidden, though if i can get this working at all.

I'm trying to use jquery to hide some contents in a for statement but is not working. Here is the code
if( $total_attachments > 0 ) {
for ($i=0; $i < $total_attachments; $i++) {
//output div and image in it
echo '<div class="pictures_entry">';
echo '<a href="'.$attachments[$i]["location"].'" title="'.$attachments[$i]["title"].'" rel="prettyPhoto[gallery]"><img src="'.$attachments[$i]["location"].'" width="128" height="120" alt="'.get_the_title().'" /></a>';
echo '<div id="pictures_entry_name_'.$i.'">';
echo '<h6>'.$attachments[$i]["title"].'</h6></div>';
echo '</div>';
}}?>
I want to hide the pictures_entry_name_'.$i. and when a user clicks on a picture <a href="'.$attachments[$i]["location"].'" title="'.$attachments[$i]["title"].'" rel="prettyPhoto[gallery]"><img src="'.$attachments[$i]["location"].'" width="128" height="120" alt="'.get_the_title().'" /></a>,
I want to slide down the pictures_entry_name_'.$i of this picture.

I am having some jQuery troubles whereby I have some jQuery that toggles an 'Other' HTML input field and associated label when a user selects the value Other from a HTML select drop down. I have this working for one field but the application I am building has increased in scope whereby there may be multiple instances of members on one page so the Other option will be there multiple times. At the moment if a user selects Other from one drop down all Other input fields show. How do I make this exclusive without repeating the jQuery for the separate instances?
// Show/Hide 'Other'
$(document).ready(function() {
$('.jOther').hide();
$('.jTitle').change(function() {
var $index = $('.jTitle').index(this);
alert($index);
if($('.jTitle').val() != 'Other') {
$('.jOther').hide();
} else {
$('.jOther').show();
window.location.hash = 'Other' + $index;
}});
});
<td>
<select id="title" class="inlineSpace jTitle">
<option value="Please select">Please select...</option>
<option value="Mr">Mr</option>
<option value="Mrs">Mrs</option>
<option value="Ms">Ms</option>
<option value="Miss">Miss</option>
<option value="Dr">Dr</option>
<option value="Other">Other</option>
</select>
<label for="other" class="inlineSpace jOther">Other</label>
<input type="text" class="text jOther" name="other" id="other" maxlength="6" />
</td>

For example I have this sort code:
for ($i=0;$i<$db;$i++) {
$t1="toggleh$i";
echo "<div class='c'>Test<input name='$t1' type='image' id='$t1' src='test.png'/></div> <br>";
}
I try to make clear the screen for users, so I use hide & show to hide some row on screen what users actually don't need...
The JS part of code is something like this:
$('#toggleh0').click( function() {
$('div.showhide').toggle(400);
});
$('#toggleh1').click( function() {
$('div.showhide').toggle(400);
});
$('#toggleh3').click( function() {
$('div.showhide').toggle(400);
});
.
.
.
I dont know how can do this dynamic. So if "$i=6;" then I need toggle 0-6 function...

I have a form which has two radio buttons at the beginning which show and hide fields depending on what button is clicked:
I want to adapt this js and html code so that when the page loads it checks whether one of the two radio buttons is clicked and depending on that it displays/hides the divs which are declared in the current function, at the moment it performs this when the user clicks one of the radio buttons but I want to perform it when the page is loaded and also when the user first enters the page I want the yes radio button to be selected and obviously show/hide

I have a form with a shipping address area and a billing address area. Right now I have a checkbox that fills in the billing address information if its the same as shipping information. Instead of having that so the form isnt so long when people first look at it I would like for the billing address fields to be hidden when you first come onto the page, and only if the address's are different the person will click the check box and the billing address section will appear. I know this has to be done in javascript but I have never done it

I am looking for a general purpose javascript snippet that enables me to
<div> or <span> HTML to make portions of the form be hidden and then appear.
The form contains about 12 sections and some sections can contain
subsections. When the user clicks on a checkbox, I want previously hidden
text boxes, radio buttons, text, drop down menus, and additional checkboxes
to appear. In some cases, clicking on a checkbox in a section can cause
additional previously hidden text boxes, radio buttons, text, drop down
menus, and additional checkboxes to appear.
Within each section, a list of individual names is displayed with an initial
checkbox beside each name being displayed. Clicking the checkbox beside a
name is what triggers the hidden info to be displayed. The server side
application is written in php and the field names are assigned using
brackets as the array is created. As an example the HTML checkbox beside
the first name <input type='checkbox' name='sect1custname[1]' value'First
Name'> The HTML for the next name woud be exactly the same except the name
field would be defined as name='sect1custname[2]'. All of the other input
buttons, boxes, menus, and text would use the same naming conventions so
that the server side module can correctly process the data.
I am hoping to keep this as generic as possible so that we can add, change,
and/or delete entire sections simply by creating the appropriate HTML and
surrounding it with the correct <div> or <span>. I understand that there
may need to be some javascript wrapped around the checkboxes.
If you know of , or have, or can develop the code, please send particulars
to jscott4272 at comcast dot net. If there are any costs associated with
the code, just let me know what they are. If you have any questions or need
additional information, please email them to me.

I found the toggle function (shown below) and applied it to a form of mine.
It works fine in IE, but in Firefox it appears to fail on the eval lines.
I've searched around but I can't seem to find the correct invocation to get
the field to appear in Firefox.
I've copied below the call and the html of the field itself.

I'm trying to do the standard show/hide DIV, but the system I'm trying to use it in is basically this: My site has an application form submit area, and I've got a page where I can view a table with all applicants' details. One of the table fields is just a link to "view full message" (which is a text area field from the form), what I want to do is have this link display in a DIV elsewhere on the page. It needs to change according to which table row is selected.

I am creating a form that you don't actually submit in order to allow people to download files. You select different options with radio buttons and drop-down menus and then use that information to "show/hide" divs with javascript. That part works, but if the user leaves the page and then comes back, the data can be somewhat misleading. One radio button may be checked, but the corresponding div that was showing before you left the page is not (it was set to "display:block;" in css with the "onclick" or "onchange" depending on which choice on the form caused it to appear). I know that I need to set a session cookie to save the values on the form, but it is a bit more complicated because I need to set divs to "display:block;" or "display:none;" depending on what the values of the form fields are. I'm a novice at javascript. Since I am not submitting the form, I can"t use PHP.

I'm trying to get my form to show and hide various divs with radio buttons. There are multiple options in the second box of my example. When a user selects the first option, more input boxes come up. Perfect, that's what I want. However, if they decide they didn't mean to click that option and instead wanted another option, the original part that popped up doesn't disappear. I cannot figure out how to make this happen.

I am setting up a contact form, and want to have a drop down box with a handful of options. Clicking one option should display fields to input username & password, whereas all others will not. So far, I've tried and (replacing 'none with 'block' for the option that is supposed to show the input fields) but neither does what I need it to. I'm fairly new to javascript, just muddling my way through with the aid of tutorials.

I am building a large registration form. In this form, a sponsor/educator must register himself or herself and then may add up to 6 more " delegates" in pairs. The first two pairs registration info on the form is shown by default. I need to hide the other two pairs until when/if the user clicks on a button to add two more delegates at a time. I used javascript to show or hide the parts of the form that I had put into two divs and adjusted the css display attribute. However, my problem was that, if the user filled out the sponsor/educator section and the first two delegates, and then decided to add two more, when the user clicked on the button to show the part of the form for delegates 3 and 4, it reset all the previous visible form fields to empty. Not good. So, I thought, maybe AJAX.
I created the request object (I am a relative novice at AJAX), had it grab a text file with the code to insert into my target div, in this case a div with id = "delegate3and4". Surprisingly however, it still reset the previous form fields to empty. Am I misunderstanding how AJAX is supposed to work? I figured that, because it does not refresh the page that this would not happen. In fact, to test this out, I created a simple page from scratch with just a single input field and then used AJAX to insert the file in a div after this field and it did not reset the previous input. So, I am totally confused about why this would be happening on my live page. The page is a php page as it submits the form to a php script for processing but I don't think this should make a difference.

I have a big form which I'm tidying up by only showing elements when they become relevant, based on the currently selected input (eg to only show an option for 'waist size' when garment type 'jeans' has been selected). I've done this many times, and probably used a different approach each time, so I just wanted to see what other people do. It's currently along these lines: "If a particular option is selected, then show this element, otherwise hide it".
Code:
//the onclick handler
function checkViewType() {
//go through radio inputs in the cell and check what's clicked
document.getElementById('supplierOptions').style.display=radioCollection.supp.checked?"":"none";
document.getElementById('subCatOptions').style.display=radioCollection.subcat.checked?"":"none";
document.getElementById('subCatTimeOptions').style.display=radioCollection.subcat_sumtype_time.checked?"":"none";
document.getElementById('subCatSumOptions').style.display=radioCollection.subcat_sumtype_sum.checked?"":"none";
document.getElementById('subcat_weekmonth_span').innerHTML=radioCollection.subcat_time_week.checked?"week":"month";
}
But it's a big form, with lots of nested options, and some elements can be triggered visible by several different options. So I'm looking for an elegant way to handle this without a million if..elses. Perhaps an array of element ids and which elements are allowed visible when that's selected.

I have a form with a field that asks for a full year. If the year is greater than 20 years ago, I'd like additional form fields to be revealed. If the year is equal to or less than 20 years ago, it will not reveal the fields. (And it should be based on getFullYear(), so I don't have to update the script every year, yeah?)
I figured out how to script onclick functions and some basic .value == functions in order to show/hide just about every type of form field. So I don't need that info. But I'm unsure of how to calculate the value.

following:
<tr>
<td>New text field:</td>
<td><input name="newField" type="text size="20"></td>

if any other choices are made, I don't want to display anything.
I've tried several onchange() functions but can't achieve what I'm
looking for.
