Saving The Document After Adding Content Dynamically
Apr 21, 2006
I am facing a certain problem when I try to add a content to a page dynamically and then save the page. I add a content dynamically to the page on a mouse click and then after the content appears in the screen, I try to save the HTML file from the browser. When I open the saved HTML file, I am not able to see the dynamically added text. This happens only in IE.
This is the code that I use.
"document.body.insertAdjacentHTML("beforeEnd", "<div id='idCanvas'> Sample Text </div>");"
This code successfully adds the new text to the page. But, when I try to save the page from "File -> Save As" and then open the saved file, I am not able to view that text. I need to get that text in the saved document as well.
I also tried using:

Serverless situation where applet drives document scanner and captures images. Currently use data uri technique <img src="data:image/jpg;base64,BLAHBLAHBLAH> to dynamically change img src (image fed from the applet) when user wants to view a particular image.
Works great in firefox...In ie8, however, the 32K limit on data uri's stops me cold.
I researched switching over to MHTML techniques for IE only....but without server-side generation of the MHTML (or CSS), I am running into issues.
Does anyone know of a way to dynamically 'inject' MHTML content via javascript into current document for use as MHTML image ?

I have a 3 column CSS layout design. The page length is dynamic depending on how much content gets fed into each respective column. For this reason one column might be considerably longer than the other two, as a result the page length opens us white space in some columns.
Given the white space that appears if some content in columns is longer than in others, how could I measure the white space and depending on its height dynamically add in further content providing it fits (say additional side banners)?
I'm told this is possible in JS? I guess PHP is also a viable option?

I'm building a tree control that lazily loads branches of the tree
using the document.load() method.
The external XML document that is loaded is generated by a servlet as
XHTML. What I would like to do is to add the new tree branch to the
correct place in the document in the browser window using the innerHTML
property of the parent node.
The relevant code snippet that I've written to do this is:
var target = document.getElementById(parentId);
target.innerHTML = xmlDoc.documentElement.xml;
This doesn't work, furthermore looking at the W3C DOM API it would seem
that the document.xml property is a Microsort proprietary extension
which makes it unsuitable for my application.

Question: I need a few good idea on the best way to save a webpage (even better a node of a webpage) in which a user has created new elements. (via javascript?)
Concept: User creates elements on a canvas (via Javascript) then has the option to save the layout of those elements. upon pushing save the Javascript packages the created and/or changed elements and sends then to the server to be processed by PHP
and saved.
Hurdles: saved data must include style attibutes, text, child nodes and so on. The when other users view the page PHP will build the elements from the original user saved file.
What I have Done:I have managed to use Xmlserializer to output the "canvas" element in firefox and safri I have used .outputHTML in IE to complish the same thing.Of course there are a few differences when comparing the two strings, mainly having to do with commas.IE does not surround id's in commas and FF does. This has me thinking there has to be a better way more consistant way. on other ways to save dynamic elements using Javascript, and PHP.

I have an ASP page that displays, along with other data, a list of items that refer to a specific element in a database. Instead of adding an Add button, I would like to display a text box below the last item in the list to have the user input any new data. Once they enter the data and hit Enter, the data they enter should then be added to the list and another text box added beneath this item (just as forms and tables in Access do). However, I'm not sure how to implement this functionality.

I'm incharge of updating the stats on a chl hockey teams Web Site. I
would like to know if there is a way (javascript) to be able to save
the content of the CHL Statistics WebPage on our Server with
Javascript, in a txt file.
If it possible, then I would take the content of that page. Execute
another script that will take this information an place it in our
database on our server. By doing this, our Team WebSite would be
update automaticaly.
At this time, I have to open the CHL Statistics WebPage. Then Save the
HTML page as a txt file, upload it on our server via FTP, then execute
my script that places it in our database.
Could you send your suggestions to rene.aube@gnb.ca?

I want to switch a big function from a document.onkeydown = function to a document.onkeypress = function, or vice versa depeding on the type of browser.
However it is quite a big function so it's pretty much out of the question to have it appear in full twice.
Any ideas how to change the target event (onkeydown/onkeypress) without writing the whole function twice?

I'm using the document.createElement method to add dynamic table and from elements to a page, but I'm running into a problem where I'm adding 2 objects to 1 cell. The two of them combined are not wider than the cell, but they won't display next to each other, they're always on their own lines and I can't figure out why...
HTML Code:
var hiddenElement = document.createElement('input');
hiddenElement.setAttribute('type', 'text');
hiddenElement.style.cssText = 'width: 100%; display: none;';
[Code]....
The text input (hiddenElement) should fill 1 line of the cell, but then the two buttons (createButton and cancelButton) should both sit on the line below it, but the cancelButton insists on siting on it's own line below the creatButton, and I can't figure out why.
(I know they have their display set to none, that's being set to block by a function, which is how I know they're all on their own line)

I'm currently looking at data-piping ie making server calls without reloading the page, the server returning some data to a cookie and the calling page using that same data on the page using DHTML. So far so good...
But is it possible to actually use javascript to actually write more javascript onto the page? Or, alternatively, is it possible to dynamically add a call to an external javascript file.
Something like...
document.writeln('<script src="script.js")
The idea being that the server could return functions for the calling page to use, which would be very nice for complex web applications.
If you can do this, what issues do you need to be aware of?
If you can't, are there any ways of achieveing the same things? I'm thinking of things like dynamically adding a scriptlet call to the page in Windows IE, though a more cross-browser solution would be cool.

I am adding a div tag dynamically and depending on the #id, I want to highlight it a different way. How do i get it to recognize the new div tag on an action that normally happens on page load.
My understanding is .live only works with events and there is no event in this case, is there?

Is it possible to dynamically add an image to a document using document.write? I've been playing around with it and I'm able to add the image tag, but the image is not being displayed. I'm only getting the place holder. The path to the image is correct and it does exist. Is there something special that must be done? I have tried doubling the slashes on the off chance that that was the problem.

I have two problems that I suspect will be bread-and-butter problems for the
more experienced guys on here, but I'm not the greatest with js.
NB: Code snippets at the bottom
The first problem is that after a bit of fiddling I'm getting am 'Object
Expected' error when I click on the Depot dropdown which I can't seem to get
round. The code I had was working OK but then I cut it all out, tidied it
all up, and put it back in and now it doesnt work.
The second problem is a 'How do I...'. I'm using an XML data island to
retrieve some data without submitting the form. In the first example, when
the user selects a Customer, the Depot list is updated with all the depots
for that customer; This all works fine. What I want to do now is retrieve
some more data when the Depot is selected.
I have the XML bits working; the js code snippet correctly output a series
of msgboxes with the correct value in (or at least it did until I introduced
the Object Expect error!).
However, I'm unsure as to how to display this information on the page. The
XML contains a series of Part No's and Quantities, which I'd like to display
in a table towards the bottom of the screen. The problem is that I don't
know how to dynamically create and populate this table.
The only caveat is that I dont want to show the table if no values are
returned from the query....

I'm baiscally trying to get some twitter feeds and the rotate them. I can get it and everything like that but for some reason the jQuery doesn't pick up the divs that I appended to the container because when I alert the div.length like this: alert(divs.length); The result is always zero. The code works fine if I can populate that value but if I don't have it in the code before hand it doesn't work. However if I add a div to the container like this:

Might there be a way to add a set of Javascript functions to a display page's existing set of Javascript functions on the fly without reloading the display page, and if so, how?
A couple of approaches I have tried, but without success are:
- A) For an embedded "retriever" IFrame in the display page to retrieve a set of JS functions from the server and then on its "onload" transfer (by innerHTML transference) that set of functions into the parent display page.
- B) Similiar to "A" but to use regular old browser frames - one being the "retriever" and one being the display page.
- C) Using a JS function in the display page to make a http request for a supplementary .js file(s).
Please note: the goal is to retrieve *only* an additional set of Javascript functions from the server, and then add them to an "original" set of functions already loaded into the browser. Meaning, NOT - say - for an IFrame to download from the server *both* the additional set and again the "original" set, which the parent display page could then run directly from the IFrame.
After "A", "B", and "C", I'm at a loss for further ideas.

I understand that if I have an element in my document tree, I can use getComputedStyle() to determine its width based on CSS styles.
I want to dynamically create some elements to populate a given div, but I want the size of these elements to be controllable via CSS. When dynamically populating the div, I need to determine how many elements will fit. Currently, I have to add an element to the div first so its size will be calculated, then I can base my calculations off of that. However, this seems like not a great way to do ti.
Is there some way to ask for the size of an element to be calculated as if it were part of the document tree? That way, I could make my changes all at once.
