Rewriting OnClick Method With DOM?
Jul 5, 2004
I know how to use the DOM to change the properties of page elements/tags, but I can't work out (and can't find any references anywhere) how to change the onclick event using the DOM.
I want to achieve something like this:
Code:
document.getElementById("myLink").onclick = "this.blur();"
but it doesn't work.

I'm trying to rewrite the height of a div to make it fit within an area of the
browser window. It works great in FireFox (no error/etc messages at
all). But in IE I receive an error. Here is the Javascript code I'm
trying to run:
<script type="text/javascript">
<!--
function equalize() {
var e = document.getElementById("left_column");
var newheight = window.innerHeight - 60;
e.style.height = newheight + 'px'
}
window.onresize=equalize;
//-->
</script>
I've tried changing my doctype header and all sorts of things (some of
my research led me to believe that might be my problem). The error I'm
receiving is:
Line: 261
Char: 2
Error: Invalid Argument
Code: 0
Line 261 is the line "e.style.height = newheight + 'px'"

I'm working on [URL] We do every 5 seconds an Asynchronious XML-TTPRequest. The result of this request is displayed in the div messages. The newest results must be displayed at the top of the page.The code that we now have is:
var oldmessages = $("#messages").html();
$("#messages").html(ajaxreply + oldmessages);
If we use this, JQuery is rewriting the HTML into the div and a new request to the images is made. Otherwise if we use .before(), the messages are written outside the div messages. Is there a solution to write the ajaxresponse at the top of the div and after the ajaxresponse the old data without rewriting the HTML?

When I click on the image link the relevant id should change. But it doesn't.
Why is this?? Tried adding form tags but no difference.
<a href="#" <img src="img.jpg" id="" height="80" width="80" /> </a>
<img src="img.jpg" id="lrg_img" class="showcase_main" />

I am self-studying Javascript, and I have encountered a few problems with exercises from the book I am using. All problems seem to be related to the onclick() method and the function I am defining.
In the latest exercise, I am supposed to use a confirm button to see if a person really wants to leave a site. If they click the link, they should get the confirm pop-up box, and if they click cancel, they should get an alert box saying they'll stay here.
I am following the code exactly as it is in the book, but instead of the confirm box, the browser immediately follows the link. I have included the code below.
This problem also occurred in an earlier exercise covering the innerHTML property. There's a math problem, and when you click the link, the answer is supposed to supplant the problem. I have included the code in the first reply to this message.
Please note that on the second problem, I do think there was an error in the book. I think that in the line "answer_link.onclick = function() {", the variable should have been a_link, not answer_link. However, I have tried it both ways and neither works.
Give me any input on this. If it matters, I am using Firefox 3.
Code:

I am creating an application that uses as much Object Oriented code as I could (mostly to learn it).
I have an object called 'photo' that contains two Image() objects 'fullImage' and 'thumbnail'. All is fine and dandy, I can read the thumbnail and the full image, and their associated properties just fine.
But what I can't seem to do is make the thumbnail's onclick event refer to one of the object's methods.
Here is a greatly simplified version of the object's code.
Code:
So, the thumbnails div gets populated with the thumbnails fine. But for the life of me, I cannot figure out how to make the onclick call the photo object's "editPhoto" method.
Will the way that I am creating the objects using the same name for each one, result in only the last one created being accessible. If so, do I need to create an array of objects so I can uniquely identify each one?

I'm trying to do something, but I don't know if it's possible.
Basically, I want to have a public static class method that could
access a private object's method. I would like to be able to do :
Class.method(InstanceOfClass);
The method would then access a private function from Class by doing
something like
function method(param) {
param.privateMethodOfClass();
}
I've done a lot research and experimentations but just can't come up
with a solution... I don't even know if what I'm trying to do is
possible.

Why is the callwhy is the slice method only a method of an Array instance? The reason why I ask is because if you want to use it for the arguments property of function object, or a string, or an object, or a number instance, you are forced to use Array .prototype slice.call(). And by doing that, you can pass in any type of object instance (Array, Number, String, Object) into it. So why not just default it as a method of all object instances built into the language?In other words, instead of doing this:
function Core(){
var obj = {a : 'a', b : 'b'};
var num = 1;[code]....
//right now none of the above would work but it's more convenient than using the call alternative.
}
Core('dom','event','ajax');
Why did the designers of the javascript scripting language make this decision?

Is the form below a valid method of changing the id of an XHTML element, specifically the one actually being referenced? It does not seem to work for me.
document.getElementById("Original_Name").setAttribute("id", "New_name");

I want to make it so that when I click on something, it changes what document.onclick does.
This is a simplified version of what I'm trying to do:
Code:
<div id="clickme" onclick="document.onclick = function(){ alert ('This should not be alerted on the first click'); }">Click here</div>
However, as you'll notice, the alert box shows up on the first click as well. The only way I have been able to get around this behaviour is to have the first onclick execute a timer that will then set the document.onclick after 1ms, however this seems very messy to me.

I have the following sample code and when I click the a href link it pops up both windows.
HTML4Strict Code:
<tr false;" style="cursor:pointer"> <td>Some data</td> <td>More date</td> <td><a href="thatlink.html" false;">Details</a></td></tr>
In other words - linking the link that should open up 'thatlink.html' opens up that window first followed by the 'thislink.html' window in the table row onclick call.

Here's my situation. I have an object:
function Obj () {
this.foo = null;
}
a function
function bar() {...}
another function
function doSomething () {
var obj = new Obj();
obj.foo = bar;
doSomethingElse(obj);
}
In function doSomethingElse I want to create the following line of DHTML
<div return true;">
What I want is for onClick to be defined to be the execution of the foo
method of obj.
I tried document.writeln ("<div + obj.foo + "(); return
true;'>");
What I get is the source code for bar stuck into the middle of the string.
So how do I get just the name of the function bar in the string? Or
ultimately, how do I get the handler to be bar in the DHTML?

I only use forms as input and output to javascripts. Many times I use
innerhtml to write to a <div> for output. I don't know of an
alternative for input.
I sometimes have problems if I use method="post" and just leave it off.
The browser tried to reload the page after the script ran. Sometimes I
am able to even leave off <form> and </form>. Could someone explain
when form and method are actually needed?
I responded in comp.lang.javascript to "Adding to fields with
onchange". I had to leave "method=" out to get it to work without
trying to reload the page.

Is there any way to call the new operator as a method (function)? The
reason is that I've got IE as a COM object (Imagine I've brought up IE
using VB) and it's easy to call every method of any DOM element
(including window). But if I want to create a new object, then it's
more complicated. Of course I could always execute js code (using
window.execScript) which will create the object and save it as a
variable on the window object and then pick it up from the COM creator,
but really...
Consider the following page snippet which nicely adds an option to the
empty select element. Of course, I could use the W3C createElement,
addChild, muckWithDOM approach to avoid the execScript, but both of
these are going to add huge amounts of time and substantial complexity
to an otherwise one liner:
<form method=pos action=''>
<select name=sel id=sel></select>
<script type='text/javascript'>
var sel=document.getElementById('sel');
sel.options[0] = new window.Option("foo", "bar");
</script>
</form>
Can't I do something like
window.Option.newInstance("foo", "bar")
in place of the
new window.Option("foo", "bar") ?

I am pretty rusty with javascript and I am trying to make a webpage
that will basically act as a wrapper from one webpage to another. What
I mean by this is that I will hit this page like:
webpage.htm?Param1=... and I will take the passed params and post them
to another page. I have the post part working, but I was just
wondering how I can use just Javascript and read those values passed to
this webpage. Is this even possible?

The last time I tried to ask this question...Google Groups screwed up
my message and there was no subject (sorry for that - I know it's
annoying).
I'm trying to learn how to develop a plug-in that allows users to

found the following:
It looks like digg is doing the following to show the number of "diggs"
