Load File Names Into Array?
May 19, 2010Is there a way, in Javascript, to get a list of files in a folder (on a server) that I can dynamically load into an array that I can work with when a page loads?

View 9 RepliesI want to know if it is possible to load either a CSV file or TXT file into an array. Basically the file gets downloaded from the net and is actually a txt file. e.g. ("Heading 1","Heading 2","Heading 3","Heading 4".... and under that is the details "Data 1","Data 2","Data 3","Data 4"....) I can easily convert this to a CSV file too. The web page will always display the data and that is all. At the moment I have this code in my js file which I found on the net after searching for two days, this is the only way I know of at the moment. Is this OK and how do I move it into an array.

Am I going about this correctly? Is there an alternative to do this? I was going to display the information in a table. Bearing in mind that this is to be diplayed on a screen for people to read in a reception area. The text file itself will not have more than 100 lines (max). I will want the information to scroll on the screen but that is another problem for another day. I just need to find a way to display this text file on screen.
I'm trying to figure out how to get:
Code:
var origGrp = ['James','Bill','Jennifer','Bob','Karen'];
replaced with something like this:
PHP Code:
var origGrp = [<?
$sql="SELECT c.new_userid, c.fname, c.lname FROM ".$prefix."_club_users cu
INNER JOIN ".$prefix."_users u ON cu.new_userid = c.new_userid
[Code]....
<html>
<head>
</head>
<body>
[Code]....
I don't know why that does not work? I can not sorting the array!
i was wondering how you would go about displaying an array of names without hard coding them in the .htm file? example: i have a array of names and the way i list them is to hard code each table entry. what i want to do is have the same array of names, but use javascript to display the names without hard coding it. i want to list 9 columns and have it go until the last name is listed.
i have: function initalize()
{
this.length = initalize.arguments.length;
for ( var i = 0; i < this.length; i++ ) this[ i + 1 ] = initalize.arguments[ i ];
}
var familynames = new initalize('list of names here');

Say I have some variables setup like so;
<script type='text/javascript'>
<!--
panelsArray = new Array("form0","form3","form4","form5","blotter");
var blotter = new Array(འ',騦',魒',饼','block','');
var form0 = new Array(餢',ཱི',骹',餑','block','');
var form3 = new Array(鰌',ྀ',馅',飣','block','');
var form4 = new Array(鮵',髧',駨',飶','block','');
var form5 = new Array(Ɔ',Ɔ',魽',饻','block','');
// -->
</script>
and I want to parse the first array and then within that loop I want to get the variable name from the 'outer' array and then reference the contents of the array with that name... I was trying to do the following but it doesn't work, I'm obviously missing something about transmogrifying the text "form0" into a variable name...
for(f=0;f<panelsArray.length;f++) {
thisPanel = panelsArray[f];
alert(thisPanel);
thisPanelWidth = thisPanel[0]
alert(thisPanelWidth);
}
I have a php page that names checkboxes in a form chkwhatever# and increments the number depending on how many items there will be. In my javascript i want to be able to check to see if any of the checkboxes are checked but I cant use document.name.chkbox+#.checked. Should I create an array with the checkbox names? Not sure how to go about this.

I'm trying to use variable variable names using the window[] functionality. It works fine when you literally specify an array's base variable name, but I have a multidimensional array and would like to use window[] to build the name of the specific sub-array I'm looking for, like so:
// here's my multidimensional array
myArray = new Array();
myArray['id'] = 'foo';
myArray['sub'] = new Array();
[Code]....
However if temp is the name of a sub-array (e.g. 'myArray[sub]), and not the base array name(i.e. 'myArray'), then window[temp] evaluates to "undefined".
Can the window[] functionality handle this somehow, or do I have to resort to eval() or something else?

I am keeping all the data of the markers in this XML file, I am dynamically loading the map information using AJAX from the XML file. Now what I want to do is to have a combo box, populate all the names of the combo box and when a specific location is selected the map will pan to the selected marker. Now the place I am stuck is that I cannot get the data names in the XML file to load into the marker. Basically I have tried various methods I searched on the internet that would be the last one I checked [URL]. Another one is that I used this line:
document.getElementById("tourName").options[k] = new Option(tourLocations[k][0]);
And some other methods also.
Is there a quick jQuery one liner to return (as an array) all class names that start with "{insert_string_here}"The equivalent of the following:
Code:
var response = $( "*[class^='arete']");
var myClassArray = [];
for( var ix=0; ix < response.length; ix++)

In a form, I have multiple checkboxes which represent products whose values are the product prices and names are the product names. When a user clicks submit the next page processes it for cart/purchase purposes.
I need to pass the names of each checkbox to the next page as an array, and it seemed the best way to accomplish this would be to have a hidden input which automatically generates that array in the page then gets passed to the next (via POST) so the application can manipulate the data.
My server-side language is PHP on Codeigniter.
Here's the code:

I'm still struggling with creating a properly formatted form. This problem it two-fold. The first part isn't strictly a javascript problem, but I've included it here because it relates to the second part, which is:
1. Given the form below, how should I structure the input names to get an array like that at bottom?
2. The scripts are used to provide running totals and subtotals. They're fun - try them! But how should I modify these scripts so that they can continue to work with the amended naming policy?

I want to setup the Cycle plugin, which seems straight forward, but instead of hard coding the list of slideshow images in the html, I want to write the list dynamically when the page loads.I need to collect the file names of all the jpg images in the slideshow directory and then write them to the html file where the plugin will run.I'm sure that this is a common thought, but I haven't found any specific references on how to make it work.

I wanna send a file thru the JQuery.load, I want it to work exactly like the regular post without the JQuery. So I can check the $_FILES['file']['error'] in PHP and all its features like I do without using JQuery.
$("#load").load('gerenciar_itens.php',{/* This is where I wanna pass the file. */}, function(data){
alert(data);
});
I am looking for a way to select a file from a list and load it into a webpage. The page and the files are stored on a sd-card for off-line usage, I know that listing files remote dynamicly needs a scripting engine but since the sd-card is on the client side that is not possible, but I can make a list of those files when creating them.
It is intended for a datalogger on a tractor-puller, I create csv files with a bash script on the logger and for off-line viewing I use a javascript charting engine which loads the csv file, the files have the creation date as filename and I can make (and maintain) a list of files when creating them. The plan is that the we can select another data set (run) from within the browser and show that one. I have setup an example at [URL]
I have a .js file, we want to make it to load a html file right next to it, both files are on client system. I couldn't find any such examples and some posts talked about JavaScript security issues, I wonder if it is related to what I want.
Someone said .js file is not really JaveScript file, though Microsoft named it 'JavaScript'.
note that I am trying to "call" .html file from the .js file, not embed html code in .js.

I was trying to display a pdf file inside a HTML div and was using JQuery $('#divid').load(url) to load the file inside a div. While other HTML files are loading properly, i am facing problem loading a pdf file.
The content does not get rendered properly, i am not sure whether this load function is supposed to handle this, but is there any other way to load a pdf inside a div?
I thought I had this licked. How do I load a file with an onclick AND replace the current page with another page?

I am trying to use a regEx to grab Function names and function parameter names from a text entry.
The script is written in javascript and I expect the functions to be in javascript syntax.
For example the code might look like:
Code:
function myFunction1(param1,param2,param3){
some code
}
function myFunction2();
function myFunction3(param);
Whats the best way to accomplish grabbing the function names and parameters?
Should I be breaking it down into multiple regular expressions?
I have a single webpage that contains information on all 50 U.S. states. There are 50 links at the top to jump down to the state you want, and at the bottom of the information for each state a Back to Top link.
I'm making the Back to Top link into something more complex, and it will require three or four lines of code.
So that I don't have to repeat the code 50 times, and create a burden when I need to edit it, I want to place it in a .js file and call it x. Then below the information for each state I'll simply have:
Does calling code from a .js file 50 times slow down the page load? Which method would load faster?
