JQuery :: Xpath Not Returning Objects
Aug 4, 2009
I have a bunch of divs with the same classname, 'mediafield':
And I have this jquery code in my header:
So I know that the click function is getting implemented.. The alert box appears however I get the following error in firebug: uncaught exception: Syntax error, unrecognized expression:[@class=mediafield] Line 0
Nothing happens when firebug is turned off... So I'm not sure why it's throwing the error.

I'm using a simple dom parser function to catch xpath information of all nodes of a document. Say html is like :
HTML Code:
<div>
<div>Everyday People</div>
<div>My name is ACE</div>
<div>Hello world</div>
</div>
And parsing the DOM to store the xpath infor in array 'arr'
Code:
<script type="text/javascript" src="js/jquery/js/jquery-1.3.2.min.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="js/jquery/js/xpath-selector.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">
function get_XPath(elt)
{var path = '';
for (; elt && elt.nodeType==1; elt=elt.parentNode)
{var idx=$(elt.parentNode).children(elt.tagName).index(elt)+1;
idx>1 ? (idx='['+idx+']') : (idx='');
path='/'+elt.tagName.toLowerCase()+idx+path;
}return path;
}var arr = Array();
htmlDoc=document;
x=htmlDoc.documentElement.childNodes;
for (i=0;i<x.length;i++){
arr.push(get_XPath(x[i]));
}
</script>
And later on in the script using the values stored in 'arr' to perform some functions like showing,hiding or changing content of nodes.
Code:
<script>
for(i=0;i<arr.length;i++){
//catch the object reference with the xpath info
$(arr[i])
}
</script>
But in the snippet above,I'm getting a object but unable to I'm unable to get the object reference..and use it for something like
$(arr[i]).text();
Any work on Jquery Xpath selectors?

Let's say you're getting some xml via ajax, instead of the ajax.responseText property you create a dom document using the responseXML property.
Is there a safe cross-browser way to query that document using xpath?
I know in IE you can use selectNodes/selectSingleNode, but what about other browsers?

However, I was wondering - I realize there does not seem to be a "standard" way to do this (without additional libraries), but is there any "hacky" method that can be used to get XPath support in IE? What I mean is for parsing the loaded HTML document.

Is there a way in Javascript or Jquery to return an array of all objects underneath a certain point, ie. the mouse position. Basically, I have a series of images which link to various web pages but I have a large semi transparent image positioned over the top of the other images. I want to find the href of the background image that the mouse pointer clicks over.

Just wondering - is there some trick that allows this to be done of which I am not aware? Specifically, I would like to use XPath to query the _current_ HTML document in IE.

Currently, I'm building a website with jQuery. The function below helps me to get content from a database. In the file content_ajax.php there are some functions to handle ajax-requests. JS calls the PHP-function correctly (I've send an email to myself inside that function to check) but the script doesn't return 'succes' and doesn't give me an error...Also, when I put an alert inside the succes and error function, it doesn't popup!
What may be relevant: - site uses mod_rewrite for friendly url's

I'm working on a small project and want to create a simple dialog window. I know I can use a plug-in, however that is a bit of a over kill plus its a good way to learn more about jquery.
So everything was going well until clicking the button. I cannot find a way to return the value of what button was pressed so I can take further action within the function.

As an exercise, for the past few days I've been attempting to build a simple search and return data to a page.
The form parses vars to PHP with no refresh PHP gets stuff from the database PHP echos an array Array is output using Jquery in my #result div
Things seem to be working nicely, and the array is indeed coming out the other end.
My next aim was to be able to do something with the output. The first step I assumed would involve printing that array to a table. It's this that I'm having trouble with. I can't figure out the syntax.
With regards to the following code, I think the success function on line 32 and 33 should be something like:
$.each(something something) more something's with TD's and TR's interspersed
The code I have so far is as follows. This successfully echos out the contents of the array, but ultimately isn't useful without being able to access the elements.
<html>
<head>
</head>
<body>
[code].....

I am using a custom dialog function which is called after an AJAX request to see if a file exists. This dialog shows a "Continue" or "Cancel" button and returns true or false depending on which button is clicked. It can also be switched between "alert" and "confirm" functions.
Here's the function:
//Popup dialog
function popup(message,mode) {
// get the screen height and width
var maskHeight = $(document).height();
var maskWidth = $(window).width();
// calculate the values for center alignment
var dialogTop = (maskHeight/3) - ($('#dialog-box').height());
var dialogLeft = (maskWidth/2) - ($('#dialog-box').width()/2);
// assign values to the overlay and dialog box .....
$('#dialog-overlay').css({height:maskHeight, width:maskWidth}).show();
$('#dialog-box').css({top:dialogTop, left:dialogLeft}).show();
if(mode=="alert") {
$('#continue, #cancel').hide();
$('#close').show();
$('#close').click(function() {
$('#dialog-overlay, #dialog-box').hide();
return false;
});
} else {
$('#continue').click(function() {
$('#dialog-overlay, #dialog-box').hide();
return true;
});
$('#cancel').click(function() {
$('#dialog-overlay, #dialog-box').hide();
return false;
});
$('#continue, #cancel').show();
$('#close').hide();}
// display the message
$('#dialog-message').html(message);
}
Here's how I call the function:
success: function(result) { if(result==1) {
if(!popup("<p>Plugin version exists. Overwrite?</p>","confirm")) {
$('#file_upload').uploadifyCancel();
} else {
$('#file_upload').uploadifyUpload();
}} else {
alert("Doesn't Exist ");
}
After a few tries I realised that the file was always being uploaded whether it existed or not. I then used the alert function to show me what is being returned from the popup() function and it was returning "undefined". Obviously the function isn't waiting for a response from the listeners. How can I change this so the function doesn't return until one of the buttons has been clicked?

I have a weird bug that's occuring in pretty much all the browsers. If I close the tab, and then hit Ctrl -> Shift -> T to bring it back the width() method returns 0 on an appended image instead of what the image actually is. Hitting refresh on the tab removes this bug and everything works fine. I will also say that trying
.css('width') and
document.getElementById('divShadowLeft');
Both also return 0 for this bug.
I can't show all the code for security reasons, but I'll just outright ask.. what are the reasons that width() would return 0 on an image? I've checked to make sure that it was visible (both display and visibility properties), and I checked the length of the property to ensure it was there. I just can't figure out why width() is returning 0.
Here's a code snippet:
$(this).append('<img src="'+defaults["imagePath"]+defaults["imageLeft"]+'" alt="" id="'+defaults["imageClass"]+'Left" class="'+defaults["imageClass"]+'" style="" />');
alert('Length: '+$('#divShadowLeft').length+' | Width: '+$('#divShadowLeft').width()+' | Visible: '+$('#divShadowLeft').css('visibility'));
