JQuery :: Serialize And IE 7 And 8 - Returns An Empty String
Dec 21, 2011
I have a form with an id "modClassForm" when I try:$("#modClassForm").serialize() it returns an empty string ("") When I get the action attribute it's right so it is the form I was expecting. When I do the following:
$("#modClassForm input").val()
it returns "retret" (the contents of the input element in that form). So what is doing this? The only thing I can think of is that this form is loaded from ajax and then placed in the page using the .html(htmlString) method which is rather core to my design. This works in a whole lot of other browsers (IE 9, FF 6-8, Chrome 13-15 and Safari 5). So I know I could try to serialize the fields myself, but the form content has two modes and I'd have to construct a fairly large string and I'm not sure about encoding. Is there any other way to make serialize work? Some way to get it to recognize the contents of the form?

How can I force .serialize() function not to read the empty fields? I only want it to serialize those fields with data inside of them.

The goal is to change the source on the fly (as with a firefox extension webdev or another or even Greasemonkey) to add a link. Until then, easy does it work well. This link launches an application ajax jquery like:
$.get(...) or even $.ajax(...)
If I'm on [URL], added my link, I click and it works, I see the ajax request and pass my "alert ()" gives me the return of application. Great! But if I'm on a site other than mine (the url of the ajax request is [URL] while I'm at [URL] for example), the return of the ajax request is empty.

I can't get the serialize function that is supposed to create a query string to work.My HTML contains one form with one input of type "text" inside it. Both of these return an empty string.
var queryString = $('form').serialize();
var queryString = $('#myInputId').serialize();
What could I be doing wrong?

While using jQuery, I found that I needed to know how many records were returned and also if the result set returned was empty. After searching the jQuery documentation I couldn't find any property or method that returned this value, so I've added that functionality
myself and wanted to share it with the group.
1) Determine the number of records returned: I wanted to show the user how many results were returned after they start typing into the autocomplete field similar to how Google indicates the number of results found when you start typing in the search box. At first I thought the max parameter in the function formatItem returned this value. However, it returns the max option that you set it to. So if your query returns 100 records and you set max to 25, it'll obviously return 25 (not what I wanted).So after trying various things, I looked at the jQuery code and simply added the number of records returned by the database to the formateItem function. In the fillList() function around line 660 I added the data.length parameter:
var formatted = options.formatItem(data[i].data, i+1, max, data [i].value, term, data.length);And in my autocomplete code, I added the parameter to the end of theparam list:formatItem: function(data, i, total, value, searchTerm, totalResults)So now whenever a new search is preformed, I get back the number ofsearch result from the database.
2) Determine if a result set returned was empty I wanted to update a <div> with a message like "no records found" whenever the query yielded no results. Again, after searching the jQuery documentation, I couldn't find any property or method that would indicate this so I added it to the code. In the request function after the line var data = cache.load(term); I added the following:
if (!data) {
options.isEmpty(0);
} else {
[code]....

.serialize() does not descend into anything other than a form to find inputs, and so to serialize inputs that are not in a form you must specify a selector that grabs each input. I just want to make sure I haven't erred.
//Standard usage
$('form').serialize(); //looks for all the named input elements that are inside the element, serializes them
//Without a form
$('someDivOrTrOrOtherElementNotAnInput').serialize(); //does not serialize any inputs that are inside the element

When I run the following code, the .Length function returns "undefined."

alert(strTest.Length);
Using the typeof function, I know that JS is treating the variable as a string.

I'm trying to compare a <div> background color with another color. However, on FireBug, I noticed that my <div> doesn't have a background color code in it (I placed document.getElementById(o) on watch), even though I have already specified on my css. As a result, I'm comparing an empty string with another color code. Why is this so ?
Javascript:
function highlight(o) {
var color1;
color1 = document.getElementById(o).style.backgroundColor;[code].....

i have a problem dealing with an xmlhttprequest with the POST method: i receive a string from a java applet in my page and i want to use this string as a post parameter to send an xmlhttprequest, but once i send the request the string becomes empty. i put some debug alert before invoking the send method and they show the string properly. the string comes from a new String(byte[]) in java, so i thought maybe there's somethinig related to the charset?

So I'm having some issue with an ajax call I'm making. The success always returns an empty string no matter if what the php function returns. It seems that looking in firebug the function is called and I've tested it by sending myself an email. It just happens that it is always an empty string. And I am very confused because I developed it on my local server and it worked just fine.

How would you go about writing a function that returns a string that outputs a branched bulleted list using <ul> and <li> tags of all the html elements in a page? The html elements don't all have id's or names, so I cannot reference them directly. I would like to do it recursively so that I can grab all the elements, not just those two or three levels deep.

Just a quick one here I want a regular expression that tests a string to find out if not empty. I am currently using /^[a-zA-Z0-9]+$/ which allows all alphanumeric characters, however unfortunately does not allow white space. As I am trying to use the RE for a form name input and I don't wish to separate first and last name, I want to allow users to enter their full name including spaces. Can anyone tell me an RE that allows all alphanumeric characters and white space in a string but does not allow an empty string

I have an array in a Javascript/jQuery code, and I want to pass it to a php file. It has an arbitrary number of elements in it. So I figured I would use $.post, HOWEVER, I'm sure how I would convert my array into a suitable data-string? $.post("test.php", data); << what should data be when I want to pass an entire array? I looked around a bit on Google and I found the function serialize which seems to do what I want. But it only works on forms and not on arrays...

recently I've updated jQuery from 1.3.2 to 1.4.2 and the serialize of elements where the user can set the order just stopped working. As I googled this, I found out, that the serialization was changed in 1.4.2, but I couldn't find any example that shows how to serialize in 1.4.2 and sen the data to php where the order is saved.
Here's my code that worked perfectly in 1.3.2:
$("#list").sortable({
axis: 'y',
handle : '.handle',
[Code].....
In jQuery documentation I found out, that you can set it back to the traditional serialization, but where can I set that. How can I get this code to work again normally?
