JQuery :: Updating / Adding And Deleting Objects Nested In Other Ones?

Aug 9, 2011

I have the following object:
var wDefaults = {
"skin":1,
"pagewidth":"960px",
"c1col":[
{"wid":"w001","pcol":0,"wpos":0,"wclosed":"false","wcollapsed":"true"}
],
"c3col":[
{"wid":"w002","pcol":0,"wpos":0,"wclosed":"false","wcollapsed":"false"},
{"wid":"w003","pcol":0,"wpos":1,"wclosed":"false","wcollapsed":"false"},
{"wid":"w004","pcol":0,"wpos":2,"wclosed":"false","wcollapsed":"false"},
{"wid":"w005","pcol":1,"wpos":0,"wclosed":"false","wcollapsed":"false"},
{"wid":"w006","pcol":1,"wpos":1,"wclosed":"false","wcollapsed":"false"},
{"wid":"w007","pcol":1,"wpos":2,"wclosed":"false","wcollapsed":"false"},
{"wid":"w008","pcol":1,"wpos":3,"wclosed":"false","wcollapsed":"false"},
{"wid":"w009","pcol":2,"wpos":0,"wclosed":"false","wcollapsed":"false"},
{"wid":"w010","pcol":2,"wpos":1,"wclosed":"false","wcollapsed":"false"}, {"wid":"w011","pcol":2,"wpos":2,"wclosed":"false","wcollapsed":"false"}
]}

First, how do I access a single value? I've tried some of the examples I saw on the forum, but nothing happened. The alert did not fire:
alert(wDefaults.c3col[0].wid); //first try
alert(wDefaults.c3col.0.wid); //second try
var obj = wDefaults.c3col[0]; //third try
alert(obj.wid);

The nested objects are the properties for widgets within a portal. After the user moves around the widgets, I need to update the object, putting the widgets in a different order within c3col and updating the values saved in pcol, wpos, wclosed, & wcollapsed. I also may need to add or delete an object, for example, delete wid=w003 and add a new one called w012.

My logic would be:
for each widget on the page
found = false
find the object in c3col where wid == x and update its other values
. set found = true
if found == false then add a new object to c3col with x & its properties
end for
for each object in c3col
if that wid isn't found in the list of widgets on the page, delete it from c3col
end for
sort the objects under c3col by pcol and then wpos

The red parts are the ones I'm unclear about how to do it. My basic questions are:
(1) How do you access a single nested object?
(an object within c3col, find and change its values)
(2) How do you add a new nested object to an existing object?
(add a new object to c3col)
(3) How do you delete an nested object?
(remove an object from c3col)
(4) How do you sort nested objects?
(sort the objects in c3col by pcol and wpos)

Deleting Objects (DOM Notes With Event Listeners Attached)

Jun 29, 2011

I am creating JS objects that have some properties that contain DOM nodes, and some of these DOM nodes have event listeners attached to them. When I delete such objects, do I first need to remove the event listeners attached to some of the DOM nodes? And do I need to use removeChild on the DOM nodes that are properties of the object? Or does JavaScript take care of all that?

Using Recursion To Print Out Nested Objects

Dec 29, 2009

I am having trouble with a recursive function I created to list out the indexes and values of various nested objects.
var macros={
CTRL: {
ALT: {
ENTER: "<br />",
P: "<p>.</p>",
A: "<a href="">.</a>",
_1: "<h1>.</h1>",
_2: "<h2>.</h2>",
_3: "<h3>.</h3>",
_4: "<h4>.</h4>",
_5: "<h5>.</h5>",
_6: "<h6>.</h6>"
}}};

I want to print out the whole 'bread crumb trail' to each object, ie CTRL ALT 6: <h6>.</h6>, but at the moment my function prints out CTRL ALT twice for 'ENTER' and then never again. The function:
function printObj(obj) {
for(i in obj) {
var n=i.replace("_", "");
document.write(n);
if(typeof obj[i]=="string") {
document.write(":");
document.write(" "+obj[i].replace(/</g, "<").replace(/>/g, ">"));
} else {
document.write(n);
}
if(typeof obj[i]=="object") printObj(obj[i]);
document.write("
");
}}
printObj(macros);

The current output:
CTRLCTRLALTALTENTER: <br /> P: <p>.</p> A: <a href="">.</a> 1: <h1>.</h1> 2: <h2>.</h2> 3: <h3>.</h3> 4: <h4>.</h4> 5: <h5>.</h5> 6: <h6>.</h6>

HTTPRequest Problems Updating 'hidden' Objects?

Nov 23, 2005

I am finding some unusual behavior with techniques I am using to
show/hide/update data without having to refresh the page. I'm quite
sure it's developer ignorance on my part and would be grateful for any
suggestions.

My page has 10 tables with their visibility controlled by the user
making a menu selection. For example, selecting menu_1 calls a
function which displays table_1 by setting table_1's style display:
block and hides tables 2-10 by setting their respective styles to
display: none. Everything in this simple navigational approach works
as expected.

I am also using the HTTPRequest object to update relevant objects on
the page based on user input. The problem I am seeing is when the
HTTPRequest object is used to update DOM objects contained within the
"invisible" tables -- or more accurately within those tables having
their style display:none. I have tried using both the HTTPRequest
object's synchronous and asynchronous approach and am seeing the same
results.

I've tested when all of the tables are "visible" by setting their style
settings to display:block and HTTPRequest calls work as expected.

The other twist in my example is that these HTTPRequest calls are each
making a SQL query and updating a chart object within the table, which
may take about 500ms each to return. My initial impression is that it
looks as if the page is being rendered too fast because any more than
three charts on a page is when the charts start getting misplaced on
the page. Again, everything works fine when all tables are visible.

Is this a known problem with HTTPRequest, or do I need to migrate my
coding techniques to the 21th century?

Resolved Inheritance And Nested Objects (non-DOM Related)?

Nov 17, 2009

I posted this once, but it disappeared, and I have no notifications that I did anything wrong. I read the rules before posting and wasn't breaking any so I am not sure why it disappeared but here goes again.

I am trying to learn Javascript (particularly OOP) from a series of screencasts by Douglas Crockford. I have developed a theoretical "game" to build to illustrate it to myself better, and learn by example.

I must be misunderstanding how inheritance works, because my code is not producing the results I thought it would. Here is what I have, followed by an explanation of my understanding. $(function()

Nested Objects :: Reuse Some Code In A Different Context To Do A Different Job?

Apr 29, 2011

I'm trying to reuse some code in a different context to do a different job.The code to be reused contains hundreds of lines similar to a = new b.c.d(e,f) with different value for e and f.I need to create a new user defined object with the structure b.c.d. I've made numerous attempts along the lines of:

function d (e, f) {
this.e = e;
this.f = f;
}

[code]....

with various permuations of functional declarations.However I get error message "Object expected" or "b.c.d is null or not an object" at the final line of the example.It works with the test line var a = new d("test", "message") but not when I start to build up the expression.How should I define of b.c.d?

Adding And Deleting Elements From A Textbox Array

Dec 1, 2005

I'm trying to solve a problem with JS textbox array without success.
I have two buttons in my page: PLUS and MINUS; at every click on PLUS a new
textbox named 'dear' is generated. So, if one clicks, say, 3 times the
output is something like:

dear[0]
dear[1]
dear[2]

The length property is accessible; alert(dear.length) gives &#393;', correctly.
The prolbem is that is not possible to delete a textbox, clicking on MINUS
button. The thing I'd really need to do is to delete from the array (and in
consequence from video) the last textbox created, when one clicks on MINUS
button.

Pop() and Splice() methods do not work, unfortunely...
This is the exact code of my page:

<a href="#plus" onclick="john.innerHTML+='<li><input id=dear type=text
size=50>'">
[PLUS]
</a>
<br>
<a href="#minus" onclick="alert(dear.length);dear.pop()">
[MINUS]
</a>

<ul>
<div id=john>
</div>
</ul>

JQuery :: UI Elements - Adding Variables To Objects

Sep 7, 2010

I'm making some jQuery UI elements, and once an element is created, I want to add some custom functions and variables - I don't want to clutter up other jQuery objects by putting the functions in all jQuery objects, and obviously, the variables need to be different between different objects. However, the issue is, when I re-acquire the item, I won't have access to the variable any more.

That was probably confusing. Another way of putting it:
(function($){
var _MyUI_id=0;
jQuery.fn.MyUICreate = function(opts){
this.each(function(){
var obj=$(this)

//... code to turn the object into a MyUI object omitted to be concise
obj.MyUI_id = _MyUI_id;
_MyUI_id++;
}}

})(jQuery)
//now, create one
$('#some_div').MyUICreate({});
//The desired effect would be to give me the id in #14, instead I get 'undefined'.
alert($('#some_div').MyUI_id);

My 'solution', is to create an object variable in jQuery.fn called 'Collections'. It's indexes are the names of the new types, and each contains an object, the keys of which are the IDs of the UI elements that are converted to the type, and the values the jQueries objects. This is not only hackish, but it has a LOT of potential bugs. The code for this would look like:

This is in the 'create' function, at the end.
jQuery.fn.Collections.MyUI[obj.attr('id')]=obj;

This is outside of the create function, but within the (function($){...}) scope.
//jQuery.fn.Collections is set to {} in another file.
jQuery.fn.Collections.MyUI={};
jQuery.fn.GetMyUI(id){
return jQuery.fn.Collections.MyUI(id);
}
This will allow the first block of code to work as desired, but it inserts a whole new set of bugs. What are the common ways to achieve what I am trying to do?

JQuery :: Deleting Records With Classic ASP

Mar 8, 2010

I'm using jquery to pass trough data to another page where I want to insert and delete a record. But the problem is that jquery only inserts or deletes the records and not both together. I use following code:
For jquery:
$(document).ready(function(){
$("#btnAddPayment").click(payment);
});
//example 1
function payment(){
$.ajax({
type:"POST",
url: "acceptPaymentExecute.asp",
dataType: "application/x-www-form-urlencoded", .....

objRS = objConn.execute(strInsertPayment)
objRS = objConn.execute(strDeleteMemberPayment)
objRS.close()
set objRS = nothing
objConn.close()
set objConn = nothing
The queries work but not together. If I comment the insert statement, my page executes the delete statement. I already tried to call another object for my delete statement but it does the same.

Jquery :: Deleting Individual Elements In List When Clicked

Feb 18, 2009

I am looking for a way to add an id attribute to a div element I append to my document so that i can find the id later and delete it. So far, no luck with jquery .each loop trying to assign unique value and add incrementing value to each of them. In my code, they all seem to have the same id and when I click again it just appends the same value again to all of them.

//first I add a title to the list using append.
function addTitle () {
$('.myList-box').append('<div class="mylistitem"><div class="mylistitem-image"><img width="30" height="40" src="[URL]small.aspx?TitleID=' + titleid + '"/></div><div class="mylistitem-title">' + title + '</div><div class="mylistitem-options"><a href="javascript:removetitle();">Delete From List</a></div>');
}
// then I need a click function, that indexes all the current .mylistitem(s) and allows me to find the id I am clicking on so I can delete it!
function removetitle() {
$(".mylistitem").each(function(i) {
this.id = this.id + "_" + i;
});
var item = $(".mylistitem").attr("id");
