JQuery :: Changing URL After Event?
Feb 24, 2011
So I have a navigation I am working on that could beadaptableto any site. You click on a link and new content arrives with fade in / out. Pretty standard. However, I would like the URL to change so it can be copy/pasted and/or bookmarked. The code below works, but the fades don't work. Also, I know this 'breaks the back button' and I plan to tackle that next.
$(document).ready(function() {
$("#nav a").click( function ( event ) {
event.preventDefault();

So i'm just getting into writing jquery. it's my first scripting language and first time in the field of programing. I have a general idea of what i want to do, but not so much how to get it done. Objective: I would like to change the class of a div "ActiveSelection" to the same name as the id of a clicked link in the "catalog" ul. Here is an example of the HTML
<ul id="catalog">
<li>link</li>
<li>link</li>

Trying to get a handle on the basic syntax.
I want to use .ajax instead of the following js function so that I can use the event handlers to update the DOM after changing the contents of a jQuery UI tab. What happens now is that the DOM only contains the first loading of the JQuery UI tab (fragment-3 in this example). Once the tab is changed by the displayfrag3 function (a table is rewritten with new <td ids>) the DOM doesn't see any new id tags so "on click" functions using the new ids don't work.
My Call to this Function:
My Attempt at using jQuery .ajax:
What is the call statement for this and how do I pass a variable to it?
Could someone show me the correct jQuery .ajax code and explain how to add the success handler to update the DOM.

I have a text field on my page, whose value I am setting through the jQuery cal
$('#Expandable').val("fefefe");
However, when I normally type into the text field, certain events occur as the text field value changes. These events do not occur when I set the value like above. So my question is, after I set the value, how do I invoke any onChange handlers?

I have the following code:
<script language="JavaScript">
function func1() {
alert("func1 invoked");
}
function func2() {
alert("func2 invoked");
}
function changeFunction() {
var img = document.getElementById('img');
if (window.addEventListener) { // Mozilla, Netscape, Firefox
img.addEventListener('click', func2, false);
}
else {// IE
img.attachEvent('onClick', func2);
}
}
</script>
<img id="img" src="test.jpg" width="10" height="10" onClick="func1();"></img>
when the image is clicked with the mouse, function func1 is invoked as expected. When I call function changeFunction, I want to change the code that is invoked when the image is clicked from func1 to func2. Instead, both are invoked because addEventListener and attachEvent add an additional handler instead of setting one.
I am looking for a way to change the handler from one function to another. Can anyone think of a solution probably using removeEventListener?

I know how to fire a JavaScript event with the onsubmit code.What I was wondering if it's possible to have a different JavaScript code fire when one changes the value in a select option.For example, something like this:
Code:
<form action="manage.php" method="post" class="manage" onchange="return checkSubmit();">

I am writing a modification to Invision Power Board that makes replying to post via Ajax.
The "Submit" button is being overrun by Prototype's observe function. When the custom function is executed, I run Event.stop(e) to prevent the actual form from being submitted and reload the page.
I have developed and tested on Safari but users began to report bugs in IE, after investigation I discovered that the line
Code:
Is making IE execute all the code after it, and then execute its own onclick() function as if Event.stop(e) was not there. Commenting this line fixes the problem, the page is not reloaded, but this line is vital to the code.
So why do I need to set the anchor? To support the back button function after a user makes an ajax reply, pressing Back should hide the new content, and pressing Forward should make it visible. (e.g. every time the anchor is changed) This all works nicely. But not in IE.
This only happens the first time the page is visited ever, or clearing cache and visiting it again. Reloading the page fixes the problem but this is not normal behavior and users shouldn't have to reload to use the Ajax fast reply...

I am trying to dynamically clear the value of a form input field and then submit the form.When I used $('#my_field').val('') to clear the field, it was cleared on the screen but when the form was submitted the original value of the input field was posted.My browser is FireFox and I can see using FireBug that when the field is cleared, firebug is still showing the html code with the old value. E.G. <input type="text" value="old_value" />The same situation occurred if I used $('#my_field').attr('value', '') to clear the field.The same situation occurred if I actually changed the value of the field rather than just clearing it.To work around this problem I ended up using the $('#my_field').removeAttr('value') to clear the field before it was submitted.

I currently have a normal link like Code:<a href="http://sitepoint.com" class="link">sitepoint</a> and when a user clicks on it I want to be able to change the "link" class to a different class. However, I don't want to add anything to the actual link html. Is it possible to do this using javascript without modifying the original link code?

I am a complete novice when it come to Javascript. I copied the script for displaying random images at a specific interval (from javascriptkit.com). I would appreciate knowing whether the following is possible:
The pages are based on tables, so the parts that change are all cells.
1. Can I define text instead of an image in the array? i.e. can I have the image change to say an apple in one cell and the next cell have text explaining what an apple is?
2. Would it be possible to put a countdown timer for when the image/text is going to change?

Ive got a small image of a power button and when pressed the inner section on the button changes to yellow, but when its pressed down Im also trying to get part of my H1 (main header logo title) to change to yellow.
Ive created a span with an id surrounding the letters of the H1 that I want to change, the id being : "power";
The javascript that I have come up with so far and works is as follows:
<img id="poweron" src="http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/images/power.png" alt="Power on button" onmousedown="this.src='images/poweron.png';" onmouseup="this.src='images/power.png';"/>
I understand Im not really supposed to be using inline JS, and I know Ive got to create a function for the onmousedown event to trigger changing the H1 text, so am I under the right impression that the JS so far written is redundant and will have to be re-written so thats contained within a script placed just before the closing </body> and an external script for invoking the main function ?

I got this problem with live() event.I have used it as follows.
$(".addressDiv span").live("mouseover", function(){
//clickable function here......
------------------------
});
I have used the live() event to trigger the function on mouseover in the dynamically added elements. But the problem i got is that once the live event is called it takes the class of the element and stores. And when the class of that particular element is changed dynamically the live() event does not detect the new classed added dynamically, instead it takes the former class. Live() event does not update the class.

As far as I understood, stopPropagation() is supposed to stop events bubbling 'up' though the element tree (through parent elements). Eg. If I use stopPropagation() on a click event on an anchor element in a list, the event would not be triggered on the list. In my code I have a popup div, that needs to have stopPropagation(), as a click on the document (everywhere other than the popup) will hide it. When I add an element to the popup that has a live click event, the live click event is never called, even though it is a child element of the popup. Shouldn't the live click get called first? If I remove the stopPropagation all is well.. some code:
$('#a_test_link').live("click", function(e){
e.preventDefault();
alert('done!');
});

I'm currently facing a weird issue with the onchange event. I have a web application where each blur event makes a call the webserver to store the value of the textfield. I only want to trigger that ajax call when something has changed, so i track the onchange event on each textfield to set a flag if something has changed.
The onchange event always fires to first time when i click outside of a textfield even if i didn't change anything in the field.
I narrowed it down to the following: A prefilled textfield always fires the onchange-event the first time you leave the textfield. An initially empty textfield does not fire the onchange event.
Sample code (IE 8 on Windows 7 computer):

Is there a generic way to fire an event when the state/value of a checkbox is changed by another event - i.e. not a user action. In this scenario, I have a set of checkboxes with a "select all" checkbox. I have the code written such that checking or unchecking the "select all" checkbox updates the state of all of the checkboxes below.
The extra requirement here is that some of these checkboxes have "children". So, when you check one of these, its children are automatically checked as well. So, what I need to do is check the main "select all" checkbox, which would then check all of the immediate children, which would then check all of their immediate children. I tried both an onchange and onclick event, but neither seem to be firing.

look at this script :
$(function(){
$('input').bind('keypress',null,b).bind('change',null,a);
});
function a(){
[Code].....
this script bind both keypress and change of the text box to functions b and a. at keypress event handler if user type a char on input box the value of input box change to x and the user char discarded. In this case we expected to run the onchange (change) event because the textbox value is changed BUT this doesn't happen.

I have an object that has a click event I'm trying to trigger. However in the click event I have the following if statement:
if(event.button != 0){return true;}
This if statement allows right clicks to go through and activate but it also prevents me from triggering the event. Any ideas on how to prevent this? If I remove the if statement from the first click function everything works as intended.Here's my example code based off of the trigger event examples:

I create buttons from an array of objects that such as:
buttons = [{ text: "button 1", action: 1}, {text: "button 2", action: 2}];
I then loop thru the array to assign the text and bind the click event after having created the buttons with IDs of "button_<index>".
for( var index in buttons ) {
$("#button_"+index).html ( buttons[index].text )
.click( function() { clickButton( buttons[index].action ) } );
}
The text appears correctly in the button, but every button defined only fires the list bound click, in this example the action equal to'2'whether I push "Button 1" or "Button 2".My actual case has four buttons, all firing the event for the fourth button.I've tried not chaining the .click(), going thru the loop twice once for the .html and once for the .click, neither of which made a difference. If I hard code each button .click, it works fine.

function setup(){

currently on our site we have and expanding <div> that responds to both the onmouseover and onmouseout events. It works wonderfully.
The UX people now would like the expanding <div> to open with the onclick event and then as soon as the mouse leaves the expanded div, it would close. I have tried using the onmouseout event in conjunction the onclick event but it does not work (the div persists).
