Find Text Between Two Strings And Prepend/append

Nov 9, 2010

I am attempting to manipulate a long text string with javascript. This text string may have one or more occurrences of a string which starts with a particular string and ends with another string. So, for example, text that starts with 'nam' and ends with 'sit' in this example:

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit nam aliquam leo sit amet nibh tincidunt ultricies. Nullam nam feugiat velit sit amet dui scelerisque id ornare nulla ultricies.

I want to prepend another string before the nam and append another after the sitt, to give me:

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit before nam aliquam leo sit after amet nibh tincidunt ultricies. Nullam before nam feugiat velit sit after amet dui scelerisque id ornare nulla ultricies.

I think the way to do this is via RegExp, but I'm insufficiently familiar with this to know how to write the expression.

JQuery :: 1.4 Slower Than 1.3x When Using Append Or Html With Large Strings?

Jan 18, 2010

I've been using jquery for some time, and was very excited about the improvements in jquery 1.4 I have found however, that in one particular instance, jquery 1.4 seems to be performing slower than 1.3x, to the point that it has forced me to downgrade the script. I use jquery heavily throughout my web application; in this particular case, when a very large block of html consisting of a bunch of <tr>s is .appended (or .htmled, tried both) to a table, jquery 1.4 in firefox will give the "unresponsive script" error, prompting the user to stop, debug, or continue. The same block of html works perfectly fine in jquery 1.32 (and quite fast too). I haven't had time to do too much experimentation, as this is in a production environment, and thus downgrading was necessary as it was breaking the page, but I would love to figure out why this is happening so that I may optimize the code sometime in the near future. Have the improvements to .html resulted in code that causes higher cpu usage, or that would have a much higher overhead on longer strings? I've commented much of the code around the call, so that it pretty much consists of an ajax call that returns a chunk of html, which is inserted to a table (that I first empty). I thought it might be something with event bindings that occur after the insertion, but removal of these event bindings does not resolve the unresponsive script error. It seems the .html or .append is doing it. Note that this code, as is, works perfectly in jquery 1.3, even with event bindings, etc.

Does anyone have any ideas? My next step was going to be to try returning the entire table including the <table> tags, and doing a replace instead of an append, but if anyone has other suggestions to try, please let me know. Also, just as an aside, what do you guys consider the 'best practice' to be when returning dynamic data for a table (server side sorting, filtering etc from a db) ? Do you return just the data in json, and repeatedly clone a row element, replacing the values in each row (thus decreasing the size of the ajax call, but increasing the client side processing), or return the full html, and replace the innerHTML of the table?

JQuery :: Highlight Certain Text Strings?

Jul 3, 2010

What I want to do specifically is add a CSS class to strings that start with an @ symbol. I can't seem to find any examples online and I haven't had enough experience with jquery to figure this out on my own.

I want it to highlight either the first word only, or just the line that the @ symbol is found on.

Text Box Input Searching For The Entered Text On Another Webpage In The Same Way Find In Page Would Do?

Apr 2, 2011

Is it possible to have a text box input searching for the entered text on another webpage in the same way Find In Page would do? I have a webpage that I want users to input an item, and that this will open the targeted webpage and bring you to (and highlight) the matched item(s) like find in page does. Is this possible or is the easiest way to just make users open the link to the target page and just complete the find in page search there?

Append Text To End Of Search Entry

Dec 1, 2010

My work website, [URL] has an activity search on the top-right side of the page that searches congregation details. It mostly works fine, except that if you search "greenwood" instead of getting shown Greenwood Uniting Church, it tells you that there are no congregations within 15km of Greenwood. Yet if you search "Kingsley" (Next suburb over, less than 15km from Greenwood) it finds the Greenwood Uniting Church.

We worked out that the issue is that there is more than one Greenwood in Australia, so it needs to be clarified that the state of WA needs to be added to the search. The easiest way (I feel) is to check whether WA has been included in the text, and if not, to add it to the search text. This is the code I've got so far (written by a friend, who wasn't certain whether it would work or not):

PHP Code:
echo '<script type="text/javascript">';
// Check that there's state appended to the search
echo 'function checkState(){';
echo 'var searchField=document.getElementById("suburb-address");';
echo 'if (searchField.value.lastindexOf("WA")==0) { ';
echo 'searchField.value+=", WA";';
echo '}';
echo '}';
echo '</script>';

(It's included in a Wordpress Plugin, hence the echo tags)and the form itself:
PHP Code:
echo '<form method="post" action="http://'.$current_site->domain . $current_site->path.'home/activity-search" onSubmit="javascript:checkState();return true;">';
echo '<label>Suburb:</label><input type="text" name="address" id="suburb-address" title="Enter Suburb & State" />';
echo '<select name="categories[]" >';
echo '<option value ="">All Activities</option>';
$categories_list = split('[
]', get_setting('categories', $db));
foreach ($categories_list AS $cat){
$cat = trim($cat);
echo '<option>'.$cat.'</option>';
} echo '</select>';
echo '<label>Country:</label>';
echo '<select name="country" id="country">';
echo'<option>au</option>';
echo '</select>';
echo '<label>Radius:</label>';
echo '<select name="radius" id="radius">';
echo'<option>15</option>';
echo '</select>';
echo '<input type="submit" name="submit" value="Search" class="btn" />';
echo '</form>';
I'm wondering whether the if statement is valid, but I'm not knowledgeable in Javascript, so I don't know where to begin.

JQuery :: Prepend AJAX Data If Not Exists?

Nov 24, 2010

I've knocked together a simple chatroom app that gets new messages via an ajax call and prepends it to the list of messages. It does this by looking for the first hidden div with ID comment_counter, which contains the ID of the most recent message in the list that the client already has. The ajax call then makes a request to another page that returns a string of HTML with just the messages with an ID greater than the most recent one. That gets prepended to the current list of messages, the interval repeats, and so on.

The function looks like this:

setInterval(function()
{
var messageID = $("#comment_counter").first().html();
$.get("page.php", { m: messageID, b: <?=($post_id)?>, n: 'true' },

[Code]....

I haven't done any jQuery development prior to this, and it's been a while since a I did any web development anyway
