Check For Existing Window
Apr 7, 2006
I need to check for a particular window which I opened as a popup,
already exists, before I try to open the same again. I achieved that
with the following code. So this is fine.
var myWin = null;
function openPopup(aURL){
if (( myWin==null) || myWin.closed) {
myWin = open(aURL,"myWin");
}
/* Window is already opn, thus maps the url to the same window
and give focus */
else {
myWin.location = aURL;
myWin.focus();
}
}
Now my problem is I need to do a similar check for a page thats been
href to the top.location
top.location=aURL;
In this situation if this same code runs again, i need to check if this
window is already open, and if so not to open it. Can it be done in a
similar way like the above.

I need to give a web page the following functionality. There is a link. When a user clicks that link new page opens up within existing window.
For example, I can do someting like this:
window.open("sitepoint.xml");
but this will open up a new browser window.
What do I need to do to open sitepoint.xml page within the window that it was called from?

I'm not really much of a javascript programmer, but I occasionally use javascript that I've found here and there. But I'm unable to find anything that helps me in what I'm trying to do now.
I regularly use a snippet of code that pops up a small window to display an image or a very small html file.Using the window.open() function, I'm able to disable scrolling, resizing, etc., and size it to my needs. I'll have a window.close link somewhere on the page. But in my current project, my customer's page has several links related to other companies. When you click on the link, an that company's ad pops up in a small window. At this point, the viewer can simply close the window, or they should be able to click on the ad and be taken to that company's website.
I'm able to have it close the window and open that new url in the parent browser window, but my website customer doesn't want their site to go away. They want the new company's website in a new window.
Or I can simply NOT close the popup window, but now the new company's website is in a relatively small browser window, unable to scroll, resize, etc. Is there a way for me to somehow modify an existing window with an onclick directive - something similar to the window.open() function, OR open a new browser window with window.open() AND close the popup window? If I haven't made myself clear, let me know and I'll try to explain myself better.

Is it possible to remote modify an already open window form from a
local HTML file? Example (simplified):
1. I have a local HTML file, where I have some kind of link. When this
link is pressed, then I need to add a "searchstring" into...
2. the second already opened window form (e.g. Google)
I need to do this to avoid any copy / pasting of these values.
All I have read about is that this is possible if I use Parent/Child
windows, but I would like to know if this is possible to do between two
independant pages?

I have a main webpage that has a list of records, each with a link to a
window.open function call. As an example, a page that opens is
editrecord.aspx?RecordID=34, and another is
editrecord.aspx?RecordID=52. If the user starts changing the contents
of the opened window, and then leaves it open and goes back to the main
page, refreshes the list, and clicks on the same record link again, it
reloads the contents of the page the user had changed, and all the
changes they made are lost. Is there a way to check to see if the
window for that record is open before we reload it, so that I can just
call the focus() function on that window instead of window.open again?

I have a link in a remote window that will blur itself and focus the opener window. The problem that I'm running into now is checking from the opener to see if the remote window is open so I can focus it. Here's what I have so far but I'm getting errors.
Code:
if (feedbackWin.closed) {
feedbackWin=window.open(url,feedbackWin,settings);
}
else {
feedbackWin.focus();
}
When running this code from the opener window, it errors out saying feedbackWin is undefined even though the window is actually open.
I can detect if the opener is still open but its the remote window thats giving me some grief.

i installed a shout box for my users, its integrated by using session username. but what i want to do is have a username list under the shoutbox that shows which members (usernames) have the box open. that way the other members can see someone is out there to see their message.. one alternative would be to just have the shoutbox auto open (which i need to learn how to do) as soon as they sign on to the site, but what if they close it right away i still have the same issue (they cant see the message that someone is sending them) here is how i open the window now, they have to click on the link.
<a href="#" onClick="javascript:popup=window.open('shoutbox/minichat.php','SHTB','status=0,menubar=0,resizable=0,scrollbars=0,width=297px,height=300px');"><font size="2">Shoutbox</font></a>
so how do i know which users have it open? and how to i autostart the shoutbox? (do i used onload and onunload?)

If we have a popup window open and it is not in focus how can we check it? If the popup is not in focus and the user is looking at something else I want to play a "beep" sound using <embed>. However if they are focused on the popup I do not wan to play this "beep" sound.
To explain in further detail I have a Instant Messenger running and if the user does not have the IM focused and they get a new message there is no way in letting them know. So I thought a "beep" sound would be nice. I found a way to simply focus() the window, however don't think many will like that.

I have an iframe. I load a page within it. The page I load is a php page that I build with a table with the id of 'readmail_table'. My iframe is 'readmail_frame'. Someone clicks on a message title outside of the iframe and I load the contents of the message in the iframe from the database in my table. Sometimes this takes longer than others depending on how large the message is. What I am doing here is letting the contents load then calculating the width and height of the table and then increasing the iframe's size so there are no scrollbars. This works 98% of the time but I ran into an issue where the table does not exist yet in the iframe and the JS code errors out. So what I did then was add a local var, set it to false then had a while loop check for the table and once it finds it, set the var to false and run my code. Again, mixed results. Sometimes this works then others I get that the table id I am looking for is null but my if statement in the while loop is checking to see if != null
[Code]...
Like I said, most of the time this works exactly how I need it. I just need a fool proof way to determine that this table is in fact on the page. I am not sure why it works sometimes and not others since I am looping until it is there

There's an object:
foo = new Object();
and a property called 'bar' with a value of 1 is to be added to it using
JSON. If I try the following it only demonstrates my ignorance:
var str = "{foo:{bar:1}}";
eval(str);
alert(foo.bar) // gives undefined
Could someone please explain what I'm doing wrong here?

I came across Marijn's helper function again called forEach. It does just what it sounds like it does, and is one of those things one would consider adding to their own personal little library like getElementsByClassName...My question is, I've heard/seen that Mozilla (and only Mozilla at this point) indeed HAVE a forEach function, and I do most of my beginning testing in a recent-stable Mozilla browser, so I'm not 100% sure but I think the Mozilla forEach might work... what happens if I write my own and I keep the name?
So if there's some default forEach that the browser natively understands, and then I have a function in my lib that has the same name, does mine take precedence over the native one, or not? Is it just safer giving libraries slightly weird names so new in-built functions can't possibly interfere?So also, if later browsers end up implementing the newer Javascript (2?) that as I hear, will implement a getElementsByClassName, would this break, or ignore, everyone's pre-made getElementsByClassName, assuming they are called the same name?

Here is the HTML: [URL] I'm trying to uncheck the selected radio button, then set the value to 1 (Yes), basically overwriting theinitialvalue to 1. I've looked at prop(), val(), and attr(), and just don't know where to start. Should I select $('#set_q157 input') or$('#set_q157 input:radio'), or each individual radio?
Do I need to each them, and check if its checked, then change its value, or is there a way to select all three inputs as just one radial button? It would also need to work if the input has not yet been checked.

Buenas noches dudes and dudettes,
I'm a total jquery noob, so this is probably very easy for you:
I've got a couple of selectboxes on my page, all with the IDselFunction1,selFunction2 and so on...
I want to create a new select box next to the preexisting selectbox if a certain value is selected, let's say "beaver".
How do i do this?

What makes this easy is I'm trying to replicate an existing website: BT's Personal Site
The menu of Packages / Phone, etc is very nice. Not only does the menu auto scroll, but also reacts to mouseover in a lovely manner (thereafter going back to auto scroll if there is no user input).
I've spent the afternoon going through all of JQuery's plugin library but I couldn't find something similar. I found individual scripts that I could use to mirror the auto rotate, but that meant integrating the rollover wouldn't work. Anyone got ideas on how to implement this?
A pre-existing script would be great if there is one(!) Otherwise, real simple advice as I'm a bit of a noob to jQuery. If there is no pre-existing script or the alterations will take a bit of effort, I'm happy to compensate if there is an expert for hire (depending on rates obviously!)
