Change Textbox Value With Script Only When It Is Empty?

I've been teaching myself HTML and CSS for a while, and now I've moved into the world of Javascript (but I'm still very much a beginner). For practice, I've been building a sample sign up form for a mock website, and I'm having problems with the birthdate section. The idea I had was to have MM, DD, and YYYY be the default values of my 3 textboxes (as an example for users), then set the value to nothing when the box gained focus. That all works fine, but I ran into problems when I tried to write an if statement to set the value back to MM, DD, or YYYY if the value was still nothing when the user clicked away. As it is now it just replaces the text inputted into the textbox (which of course is not good). Any ideas for what the problem might be? code...
Another side question, if I set a variable equal to the value of a textbox, then change the value of the variable, does that also change the value of the textbox? or is the variable no longer associated with the textbox. Example code...
does document.form.textbox.value = blue? or is var a now completely independent of the textbox value?
I have this form that validates a few textboxes & a dropdownlist. And when it is not filled in, the border of the textboxes and dropdownlist would turn red, followed by an alert message notifying which field have not been filled in.Else, the border will revert back to black, and the form will be submitted successfully. Right now, I would like to prevent the user from entering blanks (like entering a space to cheat the system). How should I tweak the codes to make it work?
Below is the script and form fields I am working with. What I want to do is sum the two textbox fields and have the result show in the total textbox. The code works fine and the total textbox is updated with the value of form1.basic. The problem occurs when I add the "+ parseInt(document.form2.supporter.value)" code in the script section.
Could anyone show me a script that would allow the user whos on my site change the background image from the default color to an image from a URL? And then it would have to save their choice in a cookie.
I Should have the textbox value as my radio button value. For example, if I type "5" in the textbox, then the radio button value would change to "5". by the way I have three radio buttons and one textbox and if I select one of those and type something in the text box the value would replace to radio button which is selected and all this have to happen before the page submitted or in the process of submitting. My site inventive.webs.com/ad-hoc contains lists of activities. When a user double clicks on an activity, the text will change to textbox, then double click again on the textbox to return to static text, which is so far working properly. What I want to happen next are:
1. Textbox must return back to static text when user clicks anywhere on the body. 2. When there's an existing textbox, it should return to static text when another activity list is being double clicked.
I was just wondering how I could change a html text input tpe from text to password on the on click and when the user clicks off it will change back to text just like facebook does.
sing Javascript, on mouseover/hover, I would like to change the boder color of my textbox from rgb(142, 142, 142) to black: rgb(0, 0, 0,) then when I move the mouse pointer off the textbox, I would like it to change from black back to rgb(142, 142, 142).I can't figure out where to start or how to get this going.

But I wonder how I can add a color change to this function. They default value "enter email address here" would be in grey, but when the user begins to type, it would be black. then deleted what'd been typed, back to grey.
document.getElementById(email_box).style.color='#000000'; .....is that too nave..? It didn't work no matter where I put it. And dreamweaver didn't like it when I tried to copy the syntax of the first function, but make it change colors instead. It furthermore hated me trying to assign two different functions to the onClick event.
It also didn't like at all when I tried to apply two classes to the same object..
my only issue is whenever 1st time it checks the record if found record it display message Record Found but whenever i try to change my textbox value it still gives me this message. it does not get reset if record not found.

i faced a problem in java script which is when i want to prompt a message box and enable to let user to type their own password. but i found that a problem is when the user type their own password in the prompt box's text box, the text box's text mode is normal but not password mode. So to prevent more security and don't allow other people see the password when typing, what should i do? or have other ways to let me finish this task?
I want to implement a text input box for SMS text messages and the messages are limited to 160 characters (including spaces, etc.). I would like the font color of the text to be green as the user types and any text beyond 160 characters to be red. I would like to do this with one input box, the same box that the user is typing in not a separate display box. This will be on the users local PC it won't be on the Internet.
I've already developed a system for doing this which isn't perfect i'm wondering if there is a better solution. Here is the code I got atm.

I don't like the use of key == 8 and length == 1 to detect that chatmsg box is empty, but the event triggers before the val() of the chatmsg actually changes. So is there nothing better I can do?
I have a function below where every time a question is submitted, it will add a new row in the table with a textbox which allows numbers entry only. My question is that I don't know how to code these features in this function:
I want the text box to be between 0 and 100, so if text box contains a number which is above 100, it will automatically change the number to the maximum number which is 100.

In my grid each row has a twin row (not consecutive) the rows each have 1 text box with a name containing txtAmt. When a user enters a value in the text box in a row. I need to put that value in the text box in the twin row. i got the blur function to work on each text box but do not know how to do the rest. I typed a description of the selector in each $().
When I leave the first textbox (taborder 1), I need to check and see if the textbox contains avalue. If it does, then I need to check and see if the second textbox (taborder 2)contains a value. Since it is adding the blur event, it has to be possible.
