What options do I need to specify for the Validation plugin to simply add the error class to a specified element such as a "required" em that shows all the time. And so on to remove the class when valid.
Say we have a text input that I want to have a red border when not valid and the red border to disappear once valid. So I do not want to generate an error label.

I am trying to use asp for remote validation instead of php. But it did not work. This is whatI tried.
$(document).ready(function() { var validator = $("#Member_Form").validate({
rules: { Member_Name: {
required: true,
minlength: 2,
remote: "users.asp"
}, },
messages: { Member_Name: {
required: "Enter a username",
minlength: jQuery.format("Enter at least {0} characters"),
remote: jQuery.format("{0} is already in use")
}, }});
Also how is the member name passed to the asp page. I tried reading it as query string. But it did not work.

I already have the remote check working and it works fine. But the catch is that I want to allow submission even if my check returns false.
All I really want is to show a warning if the remote check returns false.

I'm brand new to jQuery, and I am really interested in learning about it because of the potential it offers to enhance my webpages. To give you some background, I am self-taught in PHP and MySQL...not on a master's level, but I have designed and built database-driven sites with success and am confident that I can learn jQuery if only I could get pointed in the right direction. I have perused tutorials, links, forums and recently bought the jQuery Cookbook (I needed SOMETHING to go on and it was one of the few jQuery books at the local bookstore that felt as though it would be of help). My problem is, I am finding gaps in information that, to me, are critical to learning. I am looking for a nut-and-bolt approach, 'Do this, then do that' not the typical generalizations I keep encountering.
All I want to do to start with is to remotely validate a two-item form, you guessed it, username and email, against the contents of my database (the info for the validation plugins is just as vague and general). That's it. But the tutorials and examples are vague to me, and in one instance, a link was posted offering to display the server-side validation code used and the link was dead. I can't be the only person here who is stonewalled by these thoughtful, yet overly-general tutorials and books. if any of you have suggestions where I can find a concise, true step-by-step tutorial or book, I would love to know. Right now, it's just one frustrating day of research after another.

I've got some strange behavior with validation. I'm loading up a form to allow editing of an existing database entry. If I make my changes to the fields, enter in the required "revision comments" and submit, the page does NOT post, it seems to only refresh and empty out all the entries in each of the fields. Now, on the other hand if I open the form to make changes to a database entry and immediately press "Submit" without filling in the revision comments field, it fails validation and tells me to enter comments. Now if I fill in comments to satisfy all the requirements and press submit, it posts and I get my "Successful Entry" confirmation prompt. I think I've narrowed it down to the remote: part of my jQuery. I eliminated by trial-and-error the other pieces of the jQuery code and it seems that when I remove the remote: it does not experience this strange behviour.
jQuery Code:
[code]
// Form Validation customization
$("#Form_business").validate({
rules: {
[Code].....

I have a formdivided into 2 fieldsets (see the image) : MASTER and DETAIL. When I press Add in the DETAIL fieldset a new item is added to an array where I store temporarly the data entered trough the DETAIL inputs and finally when I press save I send both the MASTER and DETAIL (the temporary array shown in the html table) data to the server. As you may have already noticed, I need to validate both MASTER an DETAIL, but I don't want the Save button to fire the DETAIL validation or the Add link to fire the MASTER validation. I've been googling for a while and though I couldn't find exactly what I've been looking for, I found that it's possible to add/remove a class (e.g, required, number); that gave me some ideas on how to simulate validation groups and here's the code:
<script>
$
(
document
[Code]...
Although this code allow me to stop the MASTER validation from firing when I press Add( and DETAIL validation when I click Save), I still can't manage to insert a new DETAIL if only if all of the inputs in the DETAIL fieldset are valid and, what's more I don't want the Add link to cause a form submission.

I am using the jquery validation plugin to validate a form's email address field. The validation works but with the minor exception that when trailing whitespace is entered after the email the validation fails. I'm not sure if this is because of the regexp or a missing trim.

I'm using the Validation plugin for JQuery and was wondering if there was a function to submit the form without causing it to validate the form. I have a table with a list of radio-buttons and above that is a drop down list of states. The drop down list of states is used to filter the table rows and when the selected item changes it posts-back to the server (via $("#frm").submit()). I don't want this to cause any validation to occur. Is there another function I can call besides submit(), or some other method?

I'm using the validation plugin available here and seem to be encountering trouble in IE7. The validation is not occuring and my forms submit. Not what I want.The functions below are working fine in FF3, Opera 9.0, Chrome, & Safari.I'm going to guess this is a result of some misplaced character or ...??? Maybe a second set of eyes will spot the error.
Code JavaScript:

I have a form that displays data from a database table, and makes some of the fields text boxes, so the user can edit them. These text boxes are required fields. But if the user deletes the text and then tabs out of it, the "required" error message does not come up, until some other validation is done or the form is submitted. How can I make the "required" error message appear immediately?

I'm trying to implement the Growl option for the blockUI plugin, the "hard" way ( as seen here: http:[url].... second to last example). The reason why I'm going the "hard" way is because I'd like to have multiple Growl messages - one for an error,one for a success, etc, all of which have different background images / styles (ex: a red X for error, a green checkmark for a success).The "easy" growl method, while allowing for different text content,only allows for one style. Thus I'm trying to get around this limitation using the "hard" way:
$.blockUI({
message: $('div.growlUI'),
fadeIn: 700, [code]...
subsequently adding different styles in my stylesheet. Yet I get an error that says "data.parent = node.parentNode", when I try and run the above code. Has anyone had any luck getting *different* growl messages with different styles/images in them to run on the same page?

I would like to wrap validation messages in <li class="error"/> with validate plugin is there any event or option I can handle to tweak the element before it is appended? I'm unsure if something like that would look ok:
$('form').validate({wrapper:"li.error"});
or either
$('form').validate({wrapper:"<li class='error'/>"});
