Calling A Specific External JavaScript Function
Nov 4, 2004
I'm trying to call a specific function in an external javaScript file:
<script src="myCode.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
How do say I just want a certain function to run. I'm using this:
<script src="myCode.js:certainfunction()" type="text/javascript"></script>
but it's not working, any ideas?

Just getting my feet wet with AJAX and trying to figure out how I can make a javascript call to a specific PHP function in another file when I have a drop down menu change value using DOM. I've found lots of examples of how it could be done with GET variables, but none for this particular method of data retrieval. Has anyone ever ran into this, and if so, how did you solve this interesting deliema?

On my site I'm using an external (big) javascript file, in this external file there is a function with the following line in it:
function showslide(){
return(currentSlide);
}
In my main html file the external javascript file is loaded within the head section. This external file does a lot of other stuff besides returning a number.Somewhere in my html file I need to call the showslide function. I tried doing that with this:
<script language ="Javascript" src="upload/3weg_slider.js">
document.write(showslide());
</script>
But it doesn't return anything, when I place an alert line within the function it doesn't show up either.

I have simple function that I call from an alert box
alert(testScore);
It works fine. Unfortunately, I do not like the sound and Exclamation
point icon that appears. I'd like a nice message box like VBA message
box #64 to appear. I know hardly anything at all about VB or VBA.
But, I do know you can call a VB function from Javascript. How? Is it
possible to get my testScores to appear from the VB function? Is it
hard? Where do I start looking?

I am developing an ASP.NET (C#) application and need some help. I wish
to call a server-side function (in the code-behind "file.aspx.cs") upon
a user clicking on the "X" to close the browser window. Is there a way
to postback and call a server-side function when this happens? I am
aware of the browser's native "onunload" event, but am not certain that
what I'm looking for is actually possible.

I have a page that has a group of elements and i would like to add that whole group to the page as the user clicks add group button. In other words, i want to start with group1, then when i click on the add button, it will add group2, and so on.I have seen the various posts on the web on creating dynamic content, but every example i have seen works with javascript that is inside the html code.
I would like to have the code in a separate javascript file and when i call the function from the html page, it would add the group of elements i want to follow the current group.I need to pass the document to the function and then have the function add the group to the html page.

I have been trying to load a javascript function from the body onload
html tag, but I only want the function to load the first time the page
is loaded: I have investigated but haven't found anything that works..
I thought about cookies, but what if the user's disable them?
My code:
//I want to call the Toggle function below only on the 1st time the
page is loaded:
<script language="javascript">
function Toggle(item) {
obj=document.getElementById(item);
visible=(obj.style.display!="none")
key=document.getElementById("x" + item);
if (visible) {
obj.style.display="none";
} else {
obj.style.display="block";
}
}
function Expand() {
divs=document.getElementsByTagName("DIV");
for (i=0;i<divs.length;i++) {
divs[i].style.display="block";
key=document.getElementById("x" + divs[i].id);
key.innerHTML="<img src='textfolder.gif' width=ï ' height=ཕ'
hspace=Ɔ' vspace=Ɔ' border=Ɔ'>";
}
}
function Collapse() {
divs=document.getElementsByTagName("DIV");
for (i=0;i<divs.length;i++) {
divs[i].style.display="none";
key=document.getElementById("x" + divs[i].id);
key.innerHTML="<img src='Button1_01_over.gif' width=ðC'
height=ཡ' hspace=Ɔ' vspace=Ɔ' border=Ɔ'>";
}
}
</script>
// C# code I inserted above the body tag on my aspx page:
function handler()
{
if(<%=!Page.IsPostBack%> )
{
Toggle('support');
}
}
//The body tag with handler being called:
<body onload="handler()">
FYI: The Toggle('suport); function is not being executed. If i put the
function in the <body onload tag.. it does run..

We had a javascript calling a Cold Fusion page (.cfm) and it was working for
2 years. Suddenly yesterday or today its decided it doesn't want to work
anymore. I'm picking up somebody elses code I don't know all of the rules
here.
All of the examples I've found really want .JS files if called with a script
tag, example below.
<script src="http://www.website.com/javascripts/xxx.js">
</script>
Question - is this a hard rule or can you call a file with any extention?

I am rewriting a website to remove javascript that is repeated on every page.
There is a header, a menubar and a marquee.
I have placed the code for the header and the menubar in external .js files using document.writes. No problem.
But when I created an external .js for the marquee in the same way it does not work!
Both menubar and marquee use functions from a .js file (runtime.js) that was originally in the website, I still call it as it always was and it works fine for menubar but not marquee.
menubar.js uses runtime.js for mouseover, mouseoff functions. Code:

I have a question related to calling external JS files.
I have the following code in a .JS file:
document.writeln('<a href="http://www.xyz.com" TARGET="_BLANK" TITLE="For an online directory of distance graduate programs, click here!"> Click here!</a>');
It works perfectly...
I would like to add a mouseover command to it, i.e.:
onMouseOver="window.status='Click here now to visit Education.com!'return true" OnMouseOut="window.status=''return true"
I've used the correct slashes in the right places. However, it doesn't work; probably because I'm trying to place Javascript within Javascript. How can I place the onMouseOver command in the code at the top of this page?

I have a form button with id="submit". When pressed, ClickGeocode(credentials) is called. This works fine and dandy with: $('submit").click(ClickGeocode) Despite there being no indication that the function takes an argument 'credentials'. So when I want to call the function at some point in my code, I should be able to do something like ClickGeocode(credentials) ... no? However, my issue is that credentials isn't once defined in my code - it is part of Bing Maps function... like so:
function ClickGeocode(credentials)
{
map.getCredentials(MakeGeocodeRequest);
}
So why does it work using .click(), and how can I call the function without user interaction (simply somewhere in my code) even if 'credentials' is not defined?

What I want to do is have a javascript function in my main javascript file which uses features of jQuery such as show, hide etc. and then I want to call this javascript function from the other page specific javascript file.

This does not work and so was wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction as to how to achieve this or something similar.

My site has a widget that runs by calling an external script on a server outside my control. Normally this runs within a div as the page loads and the widget is displayed within the div.
What I am trying to do is call the script AFTER the page loads rather than while it loads. To do this, I am adding the script to the DOM (in the div I want, not to the head) on window.onload. An alert shows that the script is being created in the div.
The problem is that the script does not appear to fire in IE6 and IE7. In Firefox it runs, but rather than adding the widget to the div, it creates a new page (everything else on the page is lost).
I have made a test page to show the problem, as well as another page showing how the widget normally loads when the called while the page is loading. Code:

My goal is to load the JS for a specific element before displaying that element. I integrated a third part script, and it works well. I set the timer here:
The JS is in my heading as <script type="text/javascript" src="countdownpro.js"></script>
About mid-body I have: <span id="countdown1">2010-07-20 00:00:00 GMT+00:00</span> which allows for the setting of a target date to countdown to.
When the page first loads it shows the above long format target time, until the js/meta tags kick in to modify it to just show the actual countdown as 00:00:00.
I have attached countdownpro.js to this post. I tried shifting the function CD_Init() to the top of the script, and also appended it inline with the .html. I tried setting the big external script to "defer", but neither arrangement worked. I also tried placing the src file right at the top.

I am creating a little word guess game, with a random function which picks the word from an array of 10 words. The second function checks if the users' letter choice is part of the secret word. Currently, each time the checkGuess() function is called, the word is changed, probably because I am calling the wordPicker() function from within. The wordPicker randomly chooses the word, then returns that word. All I want to do is pull that word into the checkGuess function, without calling the wordPicker function as it currently does. Here is the code:
Create secret word array
var wordList = new Array("stealth", "telephone", "internet", "nickel", "marine", "instantiate", "method", "function", "television", "monitor")
