Function Calling Function Returning False
Jun 7, 2010
I am trying to write a function that is being invoked when some one clicks the submit button on the form.<form name="sectionA" action="optionpage.cfm" onSubmit="return abc()">I have three tables with initials textboxes. I want to check if they are empty and return false(stay on the same page), else go to action page.Here is what I am doing, I Created three functions tableA(), tableB(),tableC() call them from function abc(). These functions tableA(), tableB(), tableC() return false if one of the field is empty and stop furthur processing and remain in the same page. If none(errors), then go the other page.i.e if table B has empty fields, page should stop furthur processing and remain in the same page.Here is how I am doing it Can somebody please point out what I am doing wrong here.Even when there is empty field, the code moves me to the actionPage.

So for whatever reason the convertToArray function in the following code returns false if the argument is more than 1 character long. If it's 1 character long it just returns the character as an array with only one value.What I'm trying to do is take a string of numbers, plus signs, and minus signs and convert it to an array.

I have 2 javascript files: 1 containing generic functions for my site used sitewide and another for a particular web page containing just the javascript for that page. The page is also calling the jQuery javascript file.
What I want to do is have a javascript function in my main javascript file which uses features of jQuery such as show, hide etc. and then I want to call this javascript function from the other page specific javascript file.
[Code]...
This does not work and so was wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction as to how to achieve this or something similar.

I try to make something where you add elements, and can delete elements later by calling a simple function. I simplyfied it right here: It works only to add the paragraphs, but the delete function doesn't work. Tried already to debug with an alert message after each rule... but the problem is with this rule I guess:

I am creating a little word guess game, with a random function which picks the word from an array of 10 words. The second function checks if the users' letter choice is part of the secret word. Currently, each time the checkGuess() function is called, the word is changed, probably because I am calling the wordPicker() function from within. The wordPicker randomly chooses the word, then returns that word. All I want to do is pull that word into the checkGuess function, without calling the wordPicker function as it currently does. Here is the code:
Create secret word array
var wordList = new Array("stealth", "telephone", "internet", "nickel", "marine", "instantiate", "method", "function", "television", "monitor")
[Code]....

I have a simple popup launching off a picture link. But the origional page wipes and display a 'false'.
<SCRIPT TYPE="text/javascript">
<!--
function popup(mylink, windowname)
{
if (! window.focus)return true;
var href;
if (typeof(mylink) == 'string')
href=mylink;
else

window.open(href, windowname, 'width=800,height=600,left=100,top=100,scrollbars=NO');
return false;
}

The command is simply
<a href="javascriptopup('home.htm')"><img src="logosparty.jpg" border="0" width="360" height="215"></a>

I am wondering about what seems to be a particular quirk in Javascript
that does not allow form event listeners (e.g. "onsubmit=...") to work
properly. In the code below, I would like to set up a function
(doOnSubmit) that is called when the form is submitted.
But there is a "return false;" in the "onclick" of the button. If this
"return false" is removed, the code works as I would hope it would.
With it there, doOnSubmit is never called. Code:

On this page I'm given the impression that stopPropagation is a lot
like returning false:
http://www.brainjar.com/dhtml/events/default3.asp
"preventDefault() Can be used to cancel the event, if it is
cancelable. This prevents the browser from performing any default
action for the event, such as loading a URL when a hypertext link is
clicked. Note that the event will continue propagating along the normal
event flow.preventDefault() Can be used to cancel the event, if it
is cancelable. This prevents the browser from performing any default
action for the event, such as loading a URL when a hypertext link is
clicked. Note that the event will continue propagating along the normal
event flow."
But often, if I want to stop a hyperlink from working normally, I can
simply return false from whatever action I've attached to that
hyperlink. Suppose I have this link:
<a id="link1" href="index.htm">link text</a>
Suppose I attach the function "alertDanger" to this link:
function alertDanger() {
alert("Danger!");
return false;
}
Because I return false, the default behavior doesn't occur. Would there
ever be a benefit to doing this instead:
function alertDanger() {
alert("Danger!");
preventDefault();
}
Perhaps preventDefault is only for those occassions when the code can
not or should not return?

I am building a page with a member login system on the home page. I right now have it so that if the user does not enter a password or username it will change a div to block style and show the error at the top of the page. Is it possible to after 5000 msec after returning false to the form, to hide the div again?
User Does Not Enter Username/Pass
Submit Button Pressed
Error Div Is Shown
Form Results False
5000msec Wait
Error Div Is Hidden
I have been trying for a while, but I either have it disappear and the form takes 5 seconds to get its result, or the form returns false and the div does not disappear.

Would like to do this:
The function setEqualHeight(columns) fires on document.ready and works well. However, in the second function (the tab function) I would like to to call the setEqualHeight function in order to recalculate the div heights again. I would like to do this in the "onclick function". How?

Captions for the images are called from the parameters of the main function and delivered into a span or div tag with the appropriate id. A very important part of what needs to be in the captions is text compiled by a separate function, in the project library.I've tried this with and without curly, square and round brackets, with and without semicolons and quotes- all with varying results. Sometimes the function is called, but it appears at the very top of the page and nowhere near the proper <span> tag.
addImage(a,b,c,d);
// filename, image name and caption are in a, b and c.
// d is the variable where I need to write my other function...
addRef(t,s);
// I need to put addRef in the d parameter of addImage.

if i group some javascript into a function that returns false; how could i carry that 'false' out of the function so it can be used outside the function.the example below shows the validate function checks for a condition then returns false if it is met. i want this false to then be passed out of the function to then throw an error in its containing function. (goal to prevent the submitting of a form)i dont want the proceed function to be called, so how can the other function prevent this.Now i realise that the validate function could be incorporated into the top level function but, my form will eventually be quite large with a multiplitude of fields so i need to know how i can call back to functions and use them as objects insteasd of repeating lots of code.

I have a form button with id="submit". When pressed, ClickGeocode(credentials) is called. This works fine and dandy with: $('submit").click(ClickGeocode) Despite there being no indication that the function takes an argument 'credentials'. So when I want to call the function at some point in my code, I should be able to do something like ClickGeocode(credentials) ... no? However, my issue is that credentials isn't once defined in my code - it is part of Bing Maps function... like so:
function ClickGeocode(credentials)
{
map.getCredentials(MakeGeocodeRequest);
}
So why does it work using .click(), and how can I call the function without user interaction (simply somewhere in my code) even if 'credentials' is not defined?

function pickitem(id,type){
opener.document.getElementById("form").type.value = id;
window.close()
}
so i'm passing in an id and a formfield e.g. txtName The problem is with the type.value - i haven't touched javascript for ages so i'm really rusty!!

I'm attempting to simplify my javascript code when it comes to ajax, but afterwords it only prints 'undefined' to the screen rather than what I want it to print.
I want to be able to put something like this on my main page onclick="document.getElementById('output').innerHTML = print_output();" where print_output() is the ajax function. This way I don't have to use a function to assign values directly to innerHTML and I don't have to muck about with a js file whenever I want to change my page layout.
To do this, I created a recursive function:
function print_output(return_value) {
if a value has been passed to the function, simply return it
if(return_value || return_value == 0) {
return return_value;
}
[Code].....
but like I said, it prints 'undefined' out to the screen. Why isn't this printing the contents that it receives from 'index.php' like it's supposed to?

The code is below but basically I have two global variables, then I have a function and then a function within that, I am simply trying to update these global variables from within the nested function so i can then go on and use them in another function! this sounds like quite a straight forward request to me, but maybe it can not be done? When I do an alert on the variables (after I have apparently updated their values) I get 'undefined'!
Code JavaScript:
var resultLatB;
var resultLngB;
function getLatLngFromTown(town, callbackFunction) {
var localSearchB = new GlocalSearch();
localSearchB.setSearchCompleteCallback(null,
function() {
if (localSearchB.results[0]){
resultLatB = localSearchB.results[0].lat;
resultLngB = localSearchB.results[0].lng;
pointA = resultLatB;
pointB = resultLngB;
//THIS WORKS
alert("Test 1 = " + resultLatB);
alert("Test 1 = " + resultLngB);
}});
localSearchB.execute(town + ", UK");
//DOESN'T WORK... SHOULD IT?
alert("Test 2 = " + resultLatB);
alert("Test 2 = " + resultLngB);
}
getLatLngFromTown("oxfordshire",null);
//I WANT THIS TO WORK!
alert("Test 3 = " + resultLatB);
alert("Test 3 = " + resultLngB);

Here is a clip of code from a script project im working on. Now my document.getElementsByTagName is returning a "undefined" value.
<a href="[URL]" style="text-decoration: none; color: #EDDBAF; font-size: 16px;">
<center style="margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px;">
<font style="color: #EDDBAF; font-size: 16px;" id="title"></font>

<li id="name"><a http="[URL]" style="color: blue;">John Doe</a></li>
<script type="text/javascript">
var pname = document.getElementById('name').getElementsByTagName('a');
Now if I remove the ".getElementsByTagName('a')" it will actually work, but it also includes the <a> tag thats within the <li> tag, which I don't want.
document.getElementById('title').innerHTML=pname.innerHTML;

I have several functions with code along the lines of:
var xmlDoc = requestXML("ajax.asp?SP=SelectRelatedTags&tag=" +
array[i]);
The requestXML() function includes the code:
var xmlDoc = null;
http_request.onreadystatechange = function() {
if (http_request.readyState == 4) {
if (http_request.status == 200) {
xmlDoc = http_request.responseXML;
} else {
alert('There was a problem with the request.' +
http_request.status);
}}};
http_request.open('GET', url, true);
http_request.send(null);
return xmlDoc;
However, the last line (the return) executes before the readyState
reaches 4. How do I return the xmlDoc to the functions only once the
xmlDoc has been assigned? I tried putting the return statement in a
while loop with the condition that the readyState must = 4 - this
worked, but makes the browser popup a message saying the script is
slowing down the system.
