Using A Function To Create A "namespace"
Mar 26, 2007
I have seen namespaces created (or really to avoid creating namespaces) like this
(function () {
alert("hi");
})();
but today I saw this
new function() {
alert("hi");
};
Is there a difference? The second one looks much cleaner so I'd prefer to use that one.

I would like to add a member moo to BN whose definition is
var moo = {"a":"A","b","B"};
How do I do it?

Using the Firebug console is there a way to log the content of the global namespace? I particularly want to recognise when something is added to it by my code. I could step through my whole code :( but I'm hoping there is an easier way.

I am having an issue with adding namespaces to my JavaScript. When I run this code in FireFox everything works fine. When I run this code in IE7, I get and error saying “Not Implemented. It is pointing to the line of code where I Instaniate the object (testNameSpace.menu = new js.JavaScriptCodeIsHere(); ). Does anyone know why this works in FireFox but IE7 tells me I have not implemented something? Code:

I'm working on an app, which createsvisualizations based on SVG. I was using jQuery SVG by Keith Wood at first [URL], but at some point I've noticed that it's very inconvenient for some stuff and wrote my own functions to handle everything. One of the quirks when creating svg trees dynamically is that you have to create all elements and set attributes using the SVG namespace ("[URL]"), otherwise they aren't rendered correctly by browsers.
Here's an example of how you create a text element...
var svgns = "[URL]";
var newText = document.createElementNS(svgns,'text');
newText.setAttributeNS(null,"x","0");
newText.setAttributeNS(null,"y","0");
$(newText).text("some text");
$(svgGroup).append(newText);
There doesn't seem to be a way to do that more effectively using jQuery. For instance, you can't use attr to set multiple attributes, since it won't use setAttributeNS.

Actually the selector works in this form:
$objects = $("dl\:object",contextelement)
but not in this form: $(element).children("dl\:object").I don't care that it doesn't work in the second, because I only need one time access, since I replace these custom elements with valid html using javascript, as soon as the page loads (sort of like xfbml I guess).My concern is that it DOES work even in IE, which only returns a tagName of "object" from <dl:object>. (given the following html attribute: <html xmlns:dl>). So I'm suspicious. I've tried following the code that matches the selector, but I can't do it, it's too complex for me to follow in a reasonable time.

This is a very basic version of what I am trying to do. I have a dynamic list which is set in a table. When clicked, a function is run to set up a new list.. The reason I explain that, is that I need to keep it dynamic.Now for the problem:When I run this page, I have the button made right away, then when clicked it creates the new button. The new button should also run the function to create the new button again, but when I click it, I only receive "error on page".

The DOM Level 3 specification has a section (1.2.2.2) that talks briefly about "groups" of event listeners. What does this mean? Is this similar to attaching event listeners with a namespace, as in jQuery: "event.my_namespace"?

I've created a function that would hide and show paragraphs from a drop down list, that paragraph contains a link that will show a div containing a map of google. But when I switch to another State on the drop down list I'd like to have the original first paragraph that showed up to disappear. So far, I can only get the <div> that contains the map to disappear.a function that would hide the paragraph and the <div>? Again, Here's the code:

How can I create argument defaults for a function? I have this function (the purpose of the lines I included were to set defaults if the user forget to input something simply to prevent an error.
Code:
addHSLink = function (hsElem, hsUrl, hsType, hsTitle, hsWidth, hsHeight) { //hsElem[string], hsUrl[string], hsType[string], hsTitle[string], hsWidth[string/number], hsHeight[string/number]
var jQElem = $(hsElem);
if (typeof hsUrl !== 'string') {
hsUrl = '[URL]';
} if (typeof hsTitle !== 'string') {
hsTitle = '';
} if ((typeof hsWidth !== 'string' && isNaN(parseFloat(hsWidth))) || hsWidth !== 'number') {
hsWidth = 800;
} if ((typeof hsHeight !== 'string' && isNaN(parseFloat(hsHeight))) || hsHeight !== 'number') {
hsHeight = 600;
}
//Some other code
}
I would like to save some programming space and time by finding another way to set defaults. I saw somewhere that you could set a default in the arguments list
Code:
function someFunction(aVariable = false) {
//some code
}
But when I try to do this with all my arguments, I get the error:
"Missing ) after formal parameters".

Does anyone know how to create a link (<a> . . . </a>) with some piece
of javascript code that has the onClick event set for some function that I also wrote (not a build-in function).
I can find all sorts of samples in these disc.groups but none of them
seems to work for me.
I am focussed on Firefox, but some code that also works for IE, would
be appreciated.
BTW I know how to create elements in the html document, that is not the
problem. The problem is that I seem not te be able to set the onClick event for some created element. I tried for both a link and also for a text-element.
I can set the onClick for some built-in function like alert('Nice Day').
There are loads of examples to be found for that, and they indeed work.

I have an area in my dreamweaver that I am grouping alot of my graphics, I have hundreds that will go into different sections so doing image codes one by one would be too time consuming.
I am wanting to create a function that will apply thumbnail specifications, drag & drop features, & double clicking (where a user double clicks on an image and it appears in a box at the top, my website is for animation constructing). Does anyone know how to create a function code for this because I'm not sure as to how to do this exactly bc js is not my speciality.

I'm trying to create a small function to expand a textarea when they hit a certain amount of characters.
My textarea is at a certain width and it takes 39 characters to hit the end. At 39 characters I would like the textarea to expand an additional row.
This is what I created:
Code JavaScript:
function boxGrow(control) {
var len = control.value.length;
if (len > 39) {
[Code]....
The problem is that after I hit 39 it keeps expanding by 1 row every extra character even though I set "len" back to zero.

I'm using a 3rd party API that does asynchronous requests for me and directs response to a callback that I specify. Since my code can issue multiple requests concurrently I want some mechanism to match each response to the specific request e.g. attach a unique ID to be returned with the response. The 3rd party API does not allow me to attach any user context to the request so the only way I could figure out how to do this was to dynamically generate a callback function per request and embed the unique id in the body of that function. When the callback is invoked I can use the information to complete my handling of the response.
1) First of all if anybody has a better idea on how to achieve the above without dynamically generating script I'd be happy to hear it.2) Regardless of (1), if using my proposed method repeatedly I will be generating a lot of garbage over time, so I want to clean up after myself. Meaning, to delete the dynamic callback after it completes. Below is an example of how I wanted to do it, but it seems not to work:
Code:
function CreateDynamicCallback(callID)
{
[code]....
