I have a word bank for a javascript crossword puzzle I'm working on. What I
want to do is when a user clicks on a word in the word bank, it crosses
itself out. I have tried:

<a href="javascript:this.style.textDecorationLineThrough">text here</a>

to no avail. does anyone have an idea on how to do this?

DOM Element.style.property Isn't Preloaded With CSS Values

Aug 5, 2011

I ended up having to preset style with JavaScript.

Here is what I did.

CSS Code:

JavaScript Code:

HTML4Strict Code:

The first time I hit toggle, nothing happens. The second time I hit toggle, the hidden list appears, but only because I used JavaScript to set the display property.

My workaround is to do this in the HTML after the element to be toggled.

JavaScript Code:

Putting this code in the elements onload event property didn't work either, which I found odd, but I read that it was not the recommended way of doing this.

I can't figure out why the CSS declaration didn't load into the JavaScript HTML DOM. I suspect it's some sort of order of execution thing, like the difference between the two following function declarations.

JavaScript Code:

JQuery :: Css Style Previously Changed Reverts Back To Original Property?

Oct 4, 2011

So I have a table. With jquery I change border properties of several td. If later on in the code those same td have their background color changed by jquery, their borders return back.

Even if nothing is changed, nevertheless after some time some of the borders would seemingly randomly suddenly show up. I am working on a maze so this really spoils the game.

Code:
if($("crush",xml).text()=='1'){
border1=$("border1",xml).text();
border2=$("border2",xml).text();

DHTML / Javascript

I have a form that will display either text boxes to edit a start and end date or just display nothing depending on the selection from a <select>. I am using JavaScript and DHTML to accomplish this and the code below works fine. When the page loads my <select> will have a value already.

My question is how do I get the correct block of code to show up when the page loads depending on what is already selected? I can't use an onLoad in the body tag because I am unable to edit the body tag. Code:

Troubleshooting DHTML And Javascript

Oct 20, 2006

I am testing in IE7.

I display one of several spans when the user mouses over some code.
Inside the span are several tabs. Clicking on the tab triggers a JS
function that hides the "current" text for the span, then shows the
"new Current" box. It's a constantly revolving door- turn off old,
turn on new. Switch from one span to another and reset the fields.

When I switch between different "spans" then switch back, there are
ghost form elements on the screen (a text area, a blank button) that
appear near where they should be. The section that I was last on does
not display. This occurs when switching between different spans.
HOWEVER, when I set a javascript alert to display what the old visible
and new visible divs are within each span, none of these problems
occur- everything displays correctly. It's as if the alerts "reset"
the javascript display in some fashion. The errors only happen when
the alerts are not on.

Does anyone know why this might happen or if it's a common occurence
that these problems disappear when an alert is used? If I don't use an
alert, how do you display JS variables during testing. Here are some
of my JS functions. Code:

Also, wich are the newer versions of all the above languages?

Changing Text With Javascript/DHTML?

Jul 23, 2005

Is there a way to change the displayed text on a web page using some
combination of Javascript and DHTML? NOT in a text box. As far as I
know (with my limited knowledge) the only way you can do this is with
a textbox or images, which is not what I'd like to do. There's gotta
be a way to do this, right?

Javascript Anthology Book DHTML Menu IE7 Problem

Dec 13, 2006

Anyone trying out the javascript drop down menus from the Sitepoint Javascript Anthology book might have noticed that in IE7 the sub menus are misaligned, they are offset to far to the right.

Has anyone else come across this problem and does anyone know how to fix it? It has unfortunately broken several of my menus, though if you just try the demo menus from the book in IE7 they also suffer the same problem.

I have added some style="opacity:1; background: white;" properties to my HTML thinking that was the problem, but it makes no difference. Still getting the error related to line 124.

Javascript Property Listener

Oct 8, 2005

I am writing a Javascript UI component. I have already written a
"disable()" method for it, but I would like to go one step further in
order to make my component as compatible with existing HTML controls as
possible.

With standard HTML controls we can do this:
myTextField.disabled = true;
and as soon as this property is set, I assume there is a property
listener of some kind that is invoked to change the appearance and
value etc of the control.

I want to write my own 'property listener' to do this with my control.
Can I do it in Javascript or is this too "low level", requiring code at
the browser implementation level?

Bourne Shell Or Tcl Style Loop In JavaScript?

Nov 12, 2007

In Bourne shell, you can do

Code:
for x in `foo bar grill` ; do
echo $x
done
and in Tcl I can do:

Code:
foreach e in { foo bar grill} {
put $e
}
but in JavaScript, I end up doing:

Code:
var l = [ 'foo', 'bar', 'grill' ];
for (var i in l) {
var x = l[i];
... do something with x...
}
Is there an idiom for looping over a fixed list of things in JavaScript that doesn't require creating a var before the loop?
