Is there a way in Javascript, or perhaps in HTML, to force a browser to
re-render an image on an HTML page after a round-trip between the client
and the server ?
In my particular case, the image is changing on the server although the
URL for it remains the same, but the browser is still displaying the old
image from its cache rather than the new image from its URL location.

How do I show the default icon for pdf, doc, etc... else show the image? Show the default icon for pdf, doc, etc... else show image.
Default icon:
'<img alt="" src="images/icons/' + sIcon + '.gif" width="16" height="16" border="0"></a>' +
The image:
'<img alt="" src="' + fileUrl.replace( /'/g, '\'') + '" height="36" border="0"></a>' +

In my course on website design we just started some JavaScript. In the very first assignment nothing shows in my browser. I have two questions:
Is there a way to get it to show in my browser so I can complete the assignment?
Is JavaScript widely unviewable? Here is the script I used:
<script language="JavaScript">
<!Hide from non-JavaScript browsers
document.write("Today is 12/15/2003<br>");
document.write("Only 10 days until Christmas");
//Stop hiding -->
</script>

I found this slide show [URL]. I got it to work on my website [URL] using Firefox, but when it is viewed in Internet Explorer it will not work. Second question, When the slide show gets to the last image, after the last image all photos disappear and it resets itself changing the format of the webpage. Any way to not have the images disappear while it loops itself or is there a code to have it stop on the last photo and not loop.

Since the code is triggered ever onclick event it may be resource hungry on large pages.
I guess desired upgrades to suit it more for general purpose and reuse would be:
1> Replace document.write with a way of altering the CSS class rule property. Hard part on this after reading quirksmode would be in targeting the CSS rule in a cross browser, not to intensive way.
2> Find a better cross browser trigger attachment than the current firing on every click.

For a site I will be working on, It will require people to upload large files. We don't want the users to think that nothing is happening, so we would like to be able to show a progress meter of the progress of the upload.
The file will be submitted through a normal form on a page (or any other way possible through the browser). Is there a javascript progress bar I could use for this purpose?

I'm using the scroll function with a layer containing a graphic that sits over the slider on the y axis. This works fine in IE but overhangs the lower scrollbar arrow in Netscape, Firefox and Opera, killing its functionality, so I'd like to hide it in these browsers.
Could someone show me the best way to work a function that says (taking the layer ID as 'Bar')
IF browser = IE
THEN 'Bar' = visible
or (better?)
IF browser <> IE
THEN 'Bar' = hidden
And how should I allow this to behave in Safari?

How do I check if a browser supports an image using style before
writing it with document.write?
document.write("<img id='picture1' src='a.gif' alt='blah'
style='blah'>");
NN4 and Opera 6 throw a wobbler.
Also, what way is best to reference it?
document.getElementById('picture1')
or
document.images['picture1']

Does anyone here know of the javascript I'd use in a situation where I didn't want to display a certain image when the client is using IE6? I'm fine with displaying it in IE7 and Firefox, but don't want it displayed in IE6. The image is a PNG with a transparent background.

how I would have a series of images pan across the browser from right to left? For example, I have several different images of clouds and I would like them to do a simple linear pan from right to left. Every ten seconds, a new cloud would begin panning. How would I do this in JavaScript?

Ever since I first used NS6, it has been buggy as hell when dealing with JavaScript image swaps/mouseovers. - The Images seem to dissapear for a second and then re-appear - something to do with NS6 having another DOM I think.
Even the V4.01 'patch' for DW4 from Macromedia doesn't seem to work for me.
Does anyone know of any rock-solid JavaScript MouseOver code, that'll work at least on IE5+ and NS6+ ??

I'm looking for a JS code that will check the current browser and then use a different background image accordingly.Mainly for browsers like Flock and etc. that aren't yet CSS3 friendly (background-size:cover; etc.)I'm not looking for an alternative to CSS3, because, well, I like it! Just a way to check if the current browser is CSS3 friendly.[EDIT]I just started reading an article about Object Detection ttp://www.quirksmode.org/js/support.html). Seems like a better alternative to browser detection. However, how do I use JS to check if the browser supports a CSS3 statement???

I have a background image that auto-resizes based on browser window / screen resolution. I want my top header menu, which requires links, to act in the same way and be in roughly the same position/size based on browser window. Is this possible? In the sample below, the image is just part of the background image to give you an idea of the look I am trying to duplicate.Is there a Javascript out there that will help me or will I be stuck having to rework my design?
