I am trying to hide a drop down box in a form on a jsp page using the:
style.visibility="hidden";
The form element is hidden ok but my problem is that the space still
exists where the element is.
Can anyone tell me how to hide these elements so that they dont mess up
the layout of my form.

I got a table with hundreds of rows...and I want the user to be able to hide a single one by clicking on the table row.
How can I do this without typing in hundreds of ids like 1,2,3,4,5... Since you can't get elements by class and ids have to unique I'm not sure how to do this. Also the order of the rows will change when they get updated so it would end up being a mess of unordered ids.

Here's my situation:
1. I have a web browser component that does not support Javascript
(well it does, but we've disabled it)
2. I have to display some HTML in it, where the user has a link titled
"Hide|Show Options" that can hide/show a particular section of the
HTML.
I have not found a way to achieve it without using Javascript or any
other scripting language.
Is it possible to do this using pure plain HTML?
I'm having an interesting IE6 and IE7 issue that may just be par for the course. i'm curious if anyone else has run into this problem.

I have a bunch of nested lists with IDs in certain ULs, like <ul id="collapse">. i'm trying to use jQuery .hide() to hide all the ULs with that specific ID. everything works as expected in firefox, safari, chrome, IE8, etc. but IE6 and IE7 seem to only notice the first UL in the DOM tree. so IE6/7 hides that first UL, then stops.
i've been searching the web for the best way to hide window elements in FireFox. But i'm not finding anything with clear defined answers.

So, I'm working on a portfolio for myself. And I want to make it for myself, because, well, I don't want to be lame.
My portfolio has three parts: stuff I've designed on the web, stuff I've written, and other stuff. Those are separated by the three buttons in the top right. You hit one, and the old visible item fades out, and the new one fades in. It's pretty.
Now, the "web" section is the problem. Right now, the div associated with it contains 3 div's. Each of those divs contains a p, and is not visible by default. On ready, I do this:

I am aware that by calling toArray(), I am turning jQuery objects into DOM objects. That's not the problem, is it? How would I fix that?
Let's say I have two lists for menus and one list for sortable content.
If I click on "A" in the #type list, the content list is sorted, the li's with the classes "B" and "D" are hidden by attaching a class of .hidden to display:none. In turn becoming:
My question is, how do I apply the new content results to the #location menu? If "B" and "D" are hidden then numbers "3" and "4" shouldn't be displayed. I'm having trouble getting the two to talk to each other. I've tried .is(':visible"), .each(), etc. and can't quite crack it.
I have some pages being loaded via ajax and I want some of the elements hidden when the page is loaded.I could hide them with CSS and then change the css attribute when I want them to show but that just seems clunky to me since I'd have to assign <input style="visibility: hidden;"> to everything I wanted hidden on load. I know how to make it visible later when I need it.Using jquery's document.read doesn't seem like a good solution either since I'd have to make a list of everything I might want hidden right there on the main page.

Now this all works...well, sorta.
The DIV elements specified are hidden when the page is first loaded.
These DIV elements then re-appear (as programmed above) when the mouse pointer is hovered over them.
These DIV elements are listed on the right-hand side of the test webiste.
They contain the Google Ad's you will see listed along the right-hand side of the website.
However, you were not suppose to see the Google Ad's when the website first loads up.
The DIV elements are initially hidden, but the Google Ad's contained in the DIV elements are always visible!
I want the Google Ad's to only appear if a mouse pointer happens to hover over them ( a little test of mine.)
I don't get it...the DIV elements disappears when appropriate, why not their contents: the Adsense?
I'm using the following css code which wrapped around a dynamically populated field;<span class="ui-widget-header platform ui-corner-all"></span>
When the span is empty I want to hide it, and I've used this jquery to do this.
However, the ui-widget-header class appears to be stopping it from hiding - if I remove this class it hides fine.

I'm working on an ordering form which calculates the total order price using Javascript. I have a checkbox which I want to use to toggle the display of various items, and also reset the value of an item depending on whether or not it is checked.

I have a checkbox for the colour "Black" which, when checked, hides a SELECT, a bit of text, and "Quantity" field. It also resets the value of the "Quantity" field to zero.
When the "Black" checkbox is unchecked, the three items (SELECT, text and Quantity) are revealed again, and the Quantity field for "Black" is reset to zero and hidden.
The reason is that users can only either EITHER a black item or select from a list of colours. Black items are a different price to all others.
How the form works
When the user enters a quantity into a text field for each item, the price of that item is added to the total at the bottom of the form. When the form is submitted (with PHP validation), it emails the order to a salesperson. The price of each item (for emailing the order) is set using hidden form fields with defined values, while the order total is calculated using the id of each quantity field (e.g. "item_31_85.00").
What I need to know
I want to achieve the following when the "Black" checkbox is clicked:
Toggle the display of three items (SELECT field, text (in a DIV) and an INPUT)
Reset the value of the INPUT field (and reset a different INPUT when the checkbox is clicked again)

Currently I can hide the SELECT and accompanying text when I check the "Black" checkbox, but it won't reset the INPUT value nor hide it. I've not yet attempted to do unhide and hide the Black text and input since I can't get this part working yet.
I am writing an accounting sofware, and I have difficulties with the form used to enter the debit and credit for a given transaction. I have used the Jquery validation plugin demo, but I don't know how to hide a specific input cell and replace it by blanks. In accounting, you have either a credit or a debit. So I have an indicator tick box at the beginning of each line which defines whether the line is a debit or credit, and if so it hides the credit cell or debit cell.

I have a contact info form with about 16 fields. I need to hide a subset of fields for address when the end user either (1) tabs out of the subset group, (2) clicks anywhere outside the subset field group.
I do not want to hide the fields when the end-user is tabbing within the subset of address fields, yet the focusout handler is triggered when it shouldn't be.

I have two questions...
Question 1 How can I make this piece of script act a little smarter. Look at the order form, I'm catering for up to 4 people and providing lunch for them. If they select 3 people and the spaghetti bol for lunch, it's only adding $10 where it should be adding $30. Obviously this is simple multiplication but since the values in my form are prices it makes it a little tricky. I'm guessing an onselect on the first part of the form which changes the pricing of the other items would be the way to go, but how do I do this?
Question 2 The "Total Price" is placed before the <form> tag by the script. This is ok but it's not where I want it. How can I position this text elsewhere in the document?
I need to pass user input from a form to one database field. I'm relatively new to JS but the idea I had was to have several form elements and use JS to collect the users input and send all the values through a hidden element. What's happening is the variable names are being sent rather than the values. The code below is only passing to the next page. I intended to do this using parentNode and childNodes[] together with the 'this' keyword. My understanding of 'this' in this context is that it should refer to the HTML element calling the function, i.e. one of the radio button inputs. I have a grid that I'm adding rows to that include form text input boxes using addRowData. I know I can use the "editable:true" for that but I'd rather not at this time. Anyway I have the <div id=list1></div> surrounded by a <form></form>. Also statically I have a couple of text input boxes and a submit button. When I press the submit button the only parameters that show up in the POSTED data are the static ones. Is there a way to get the form elements "registered" with the form? I know I can always use javascript to extract the data and save it via an ajax call, but if there is a way to do it "correctly"

I'm working with a form that has both static and dynamic form elements (add textbox, etc), and while I can access the static elements via request.form, the dynamic elements cannot be accessed. I have the dynamic elements appended within a div that lies within a table.
