Pass Only Changed Fields To Sql UPDATE?
Mar 10, 2010
Trying to construct a sql statement to update field values contained in a form. I would like to only update the values that are changed. If the current $_POST[] values populated in the form are not changed, there is no need to add that field to the UPDATE statement... but i am not sure how to do this with javascript and pass only those values. Can someone help?
Some say that it is not worth the code processing to do this but I would like to do this if possible. I know that phpmyadmin works this way.

I recently updated from jQuery 1.4 (I think 1.4.4) to 1.5.1. Before the upgrade, when users pressed the browser's Back button, they would usually be taken back to a page with all their changes intact. If they had modified input values or clicked objects that caused other parts of the page to change, they would still see those changes. Back literally took them back to the exact thing they were looking at before. Under 1.5.1, Back takes them to the prior page as it was when it first loaded. What changed? Can I get the old behavior back?

sample code, whereby if I change a field value in a web form (from a drop-down list for example), the value shown in another field is automatically updated to show the needed value for that selected option?

I am more of a front end guy with experience in xhtml/css and want to get my hands dirty with some back-end programming (Javascript/jQuery/AJAX/PHP) and was wondering about a specific task involving (mainly) what I would believe is AJAX.
I was wondering if there is a way to have a page with a starting price of $299 (lets say a basic vacuum) then below that are 20 or so customizable add-ons to choose from through simple checkboxes. That (to me) should be easy enough, but I would love to have the grand total at the bottom of the page be updated in real time as the user checks or unchecks certain add-ons (kind like how apple.com does it).
What is a good starting point for this, and would it be possible to send out the order as an email with the total price sent to the business owner.

i am currently developing a cart for a website at my company.What i am attempting to do is update the grand total field dynamically as the product total (determined by quantity & price) are being populated.Each product in the cart is being generated by a foreach (php) reading from a mysql database.As the total values are not being prepopulated im not exactly sure what the logic would be to get the desired values.
I will also mention im relatively new to the whole web development area, i started begining of this year and feel i could still learn alot about the 'logic' of a computer.If anything is unclear about what i stated above feel free to request additional information.

I've got the following JavaScript code:
Code JavaScript:
= $("#add").click(function() {
if($("#new_title").val() != "" && $("#new_url").val() != "") { // if both text boxes have been filled in[code]....
When the "Add" button is clicked, the last element in the OL is cloned and appended to the end of the list. The SPAN tag inside the LI is updated successfully. What I also want to do is update the values of the .navtitle and .navurl fields in the LI, but I'm unsure as to how I can access them in the DOM tree as I've only just created them. I'm guessing I need to get the clone() function to return a selector I can then use.

Currently, I have a php form with various inputs, and a div where I am embedding an (initially) empty open flash chart object.Right now, I am calling a php file on the submit of the form, which takes the form data, calls a python script to process the form data, and then creates an open flash chart object using the data the python script returns.There are a few problems with this:
1. When the submit on the form is called, it goes to a different page where the chart is displayed, when I would really just like to update the contents of the chart div where I initially embedded the empty chart.
2. The processing of the form in the python code can take some time, so what I would really like is to have the chart "check" the output of the python script periodically and update the chart each time, adding the new data points to the old ones.
I know I can do all of these things with javascript and Ajax, I just can't seem to find any tutorials or examples that are exactly what I am looking for.

I've been playing a lot with jQuery though, and thought I'd have a try with the Google Maps Javascript API v3
I have a bit of code;

Everything works perfectly, except the form fields don't update once the marker is moved. I expect this is a really elementary javascript mistake!?

PHP Code:
<?php
// Include the database page
include ('../inc/dbconfig.php');
$styleid = $_GET['id'];
$query = "SELECT
fields.fullname,
fields.enabled

fields

ON styles.id = fields.style_id
WHERE
styles.id = '" . $styleid . "'";
$result = mysqli_query ( $dbc, $query ); // Run The Query

I would like to passwith the help of javascript empty non-mandatory fields to my perl script (and replace them with a custom value). The form mailer script only passes the mandatory fields. When non mandatory fields are filled , these are added to the list of passed field values, otherwise the list includes only the mandatory ones. I'd like to pass all values even the empty ones so that the person receiving the submitted data via email can easily export them to a database via a macro written by somebody else. Another requirement from client: The predefined values must not show up in the form fields when loading the page with the form.
How can I check for empty values as well as for tabs or blank spaces and replace each of these fields with a value = "not available"? I tried to do solve this for empty fields (no tabs, no blank spaces) but my solution does not work properly. It requires me to click the submit button 3 times before the form is submitted (because with every click the "not available" value is added in each empty field.
[Code]...

I wrote an application using jquery/sortables and ran into a problem that I just don't understand well enough to tackle and hoping a jquery expert can see the solution where I don't.
I have a db setup like so
My page is setup to display multiple 'sortable' lists that allow the user to re-position elements (divs) with the mouse. Each div contains the 'content' (Bananas, Apples, etc) for users to see and they're even editable-in-place which all functions great.
THE PROBLEM: Each list has a class of 'biglist' in which I use the connectWith to allow these elements to be dragged from say myList3 to myList7.
Visually this looks great on the page but there's no DB functionality behind it to "SAVE" the new position. The only save that works is the elements position in its CURRENT list.
All 'content' in the fifth list for example is being generated from a SELECT statement [WHERE boxid = 5].
Each list has a different php file to generate its content that is virtuallyidentical
The order of each element is saved via a simple method in sortable's update function
Sorting is done here:
This is done roughly 10 times because there are ten lists. So here's the big question:
How can I pass the list's number (or create an ID for each list) that'll save WHICH list the items been moved to so that it's saved. (IE how can I change boxid instead of just Order)

I have been looking for the past 2 days for a script that I can add and delete table rows.
I have found a lot but so far all of them add an input field but I desperatly need a textarea or ideally a section of input fields.
I have tried to change the code from input to text area but none of them worked.
Have you come across to a similar script.
I would appreciate any contributions.
What I am trying to do is a page where the user will add their employees details so we can order business cards for them. So I have fileds such as, Name, Tel Num, Email, Cell etc.

Does anybody of you have a good algorithm to capture when a value in a
textbox is changed? I'm using the keypress/keydown events but they seems to
be a bit inconsistent (IE and Mozilla). Basically what I want is to set is a
"isDirty" flag when a user has changed any value in the textbox (or in a
dropdown) and then if he/she tries to leave the record without saving I want
to give a save warning. Since I don't want set the isdirty flag if you for
example klick tab, certain F-buttons, arrows (up/down/left/right) etc I
tried to capture the keypress/keydown event and ignore specific keycodes.
Since there are several keycodes that should be ignored I was hoping there
is a better solution.

How do you detect that a form element has been changed? This thread:
http://groups.google.com/group/comp...25a82c9be127790
suggests that you attach onChange event handlers to every form element,
and when the handler fires you update a global 'isChanged' variable.
This technique seems to be a bit messy to me (I have many form
elements), I was thinking about storing the original form object in a
javascript variable when the body loads (in the bodie's onLoad event
handler), and upons submission, doing a javascript equality comparison
with the current form object. If nothing has changed, then the two
objects should be equal, right?
if(oldObject == document.getElementById('form'))
{
alert('has changed!');
}
Would this work?

After fetching a timestamp via sql,I return to javascript to do the formatting. Actually, I was first doing a bit of formatting in php to change from yyyy mm dd hh:mm (as saved in db) to mm dd yyyy hh:mm as I found the 1st not to work with the Date() function in FF.Consider the following...
var date_from_server = "06 03 2009 01:37";
var jsDate = Date(date_from_server);
In FF jsDate is "Thu Jun 03 1909 01:37:00 GMT-0700 (Pacific Daylight Time)".In IE7 jsDate is NaN.I've tried a few different formats. Does IE7,s Date() function not allow an arg at all or only of a certain format?

I have a form where users need to be able to change a particular value in a <select> but need to confirm that this is what they want to do under certain circumstances. I have the script firing up ok and prompting the user, but I'm darned if I can figure out how to undo the change if required.
What I want to do is something like document.form.object.value=document.form.object.oldvalue but I have no idea what the correct properties are.....
So, how do you roll-back the selection in a <select>?

window.opener.img<%=rowid%>.src = "this.jpg";
window.opener.col<%=rowid%>.innerHTML=strReturn;
window.opener.row<%=rowid%>.style.display = "inline";
The innerHTML and style.display of the above works. Both col?? and row?? can be targeted and changed. However the img?? does not work. The ID on the tag is fine but the image wont change. Incase it was src I tried with style.display too on the image but still wont target it.

I have multiple fields in a form with the same name. Lets call the fields with the same name "junk_array". My first field of junk_array is a input type=hidden. All the others fields in junk_array that follow are type=text. I can reference this first hidden field in IE with document.form.field[0].value. In, fact my form works absolutely wonderful in IE 6. However, netscape 4.7 does not recognize my first field in the array as the hidden field. Netscape sees the first visible text field as the first field in the array, subscript 0. What totally and utterly perplexes me, is that, from a previous thread, I can do this and get 9999 back in an alert
box in Netscape and IE. So, this proves Netscape doesn't have some evil code that disregards hidden fields. I guess...
<body onload="alert(document.myForm.test[0].value);">
<form name="myForm">
<input type="hidden" name="test" value="9999">
<input type="hidden" name="test" value="8888">
<input type="text" name="test" value="6">
<input type="text" name="test" value="3">
</form>
I even copied these fields directly below the opening <form> tag in my form and both Netscape and IE see the first hidden field as as
subscript 0.
However, my form is much more complicated. I have tables within tables and about 30 other fields. In my form I cannot for the life of me get Netscape to recognize the first hidden field of junk_array to zed as index 0.
Somehow, If I make the first type=hidden fields visible, netscape does work nicely. Why when I toggle type=hidden to type=text does Netscape cooperate. What is happening here? Anyone else have this problem with hidden fields in Netscape? I could post the code to my form but it is
big.

I've got a web site that is frequently updated; yesterday several
subscribers contacted me to say they couldn't see the update. I suspect
this is a cache problem, so is there a way to force a page to be

pages, but I'd like to include something later.
