Force Reload Of Changed Page?
Jul 20, 2005
I've got a web site that is frequently updated; yesterday several
subscribers contacted me to say they couldn't see the update. I suspect
this is a cache problem, so is there a way to force a page to be
reloaded when it is changed. I realize it is too late for the current
pages, but I'd like to include something later.

I've a small external .JS library that allows a non code-savvy user to
occasionally update a list of values that are read as a JS array and
used to populate the <option>s of a <select> in the calling page's form.
Anyway, is there a way by which I can ensure, regardless of the user's
browser settings, that the JS library is not used from cache but re-read
each time, to ensure the up to date list is used?
If not, I might as well put the JS array code back in the calling page,
especially as the split is for ease of use by the page's owner, albeit
with increased change of editing errors. A database solution, etc., is
inappropriate here.

How do I force the Web page to reload when someone just changes the value in the dropped down list? To be clear there are many items in this form, one of which is a dropped down list, but if they choose to certain rows of this drop down list then new fields/data needs to be presented to the user.And of course change the Web page to re-load new values based on what row in the dropped down list they changed to.

I have a page A which contains an iframe B which gets loaded with content as the page loads Page A has a link. When the link is clicked, I invoke some JavaScript function which performs some tests, and then I would like to have my iframe reload some other URL
The problem is that I change the iframe's src attribute to the new URL but nothing happens. The iframe isn't reloading.
How can I force it to reload? I heard that it was a problem in IE but that could be a mistake on my part It is vital to note that if I clean my browser cache (on IE), then the code works fine once (the iframe gets reloaded). But once it is in the cache, successive attempts fail
Here is a sample of my code
Code:
<head>
function test() {
// perform some tests here

I'm using a little javascript to help my site's design to fit the visitor's entire browser window.
Everything works great apart from one problem. If a visitor first loads the page and the browser isn't maximised, the page loads correctly BUT if the visitor then proceeds to maximize the browser, the page is still set for the minimised browser. This condition stays until the visitor goes to another section of the site or refreshes the page. When this happens, the page again loads correctly.
I would like to force a page reload whenever the browser is minimizedmaximized or is in any other way changed size. How can I do this?

I have a script that parses window.location.hash to figure out which xml
file to load. The xml files populate a page on a framed site. The code works
correctly to a point.
If I have a seperate html page to support each xml it works. I would like to
eliminate the individual html pages becuase only one should be needed.
When I use one page the first link works, then the second one does nothing
(doesn't refresh the frame). If I click to a static image for the frame then
click the next xml link it works.
What can I do to force the frame to update? I am clicking on a HREF link
that should re-load the html page, but with the new xml data.

If I try to put a site into an iframe that has "escape frame" code in
its source (posted below), it will reload the requested page into the
parent instead of the iframe. Is there a way to prevent this from
happening?
One could use onunload to stop the redirection, but I would like to
find a way to load a page into an iframe, even if it has this type of
code.
I have considered server code loading the content and re-displaying it
but I would like to find a pre javascript solution.
//this is not my code
if (self != top) {
if (document.images) {
top.location.replace(window.location.href);
} else {
top.location.href = window.location.href;
}
}

I'm buildning a permissions system. If the database check shows that the user doesn't have access to the PHP script she tries to access, I want to diplay an alert window telling her so. And when she presses the "OK"-button, I want the browser to send here back to the previous page that she came from.
Is this a javascript problem? Is there a quick and dirty solution?

I have a index page on which there are several iframes which point to pages from a tomcat server. Sometimes when the index page loads, most of the iframes display session expired error. When I refresh the page, all iframes load properly. I want to reload the page twice whenever I come to that page initially. I also want to reload that page twice when I come to it from another page. Any ideas are welcome.

I have a perl/cgi script that includes dynamically created
checkboxes and file names. When a given checkbox is checked I move the
related file. how do I redisplay the page without the checkbox and
file name. In other words, I want to reload the page just as if the
user has entered for the 1st time.
i've tried variations of:
<form action="/cgi-bin/page.cgi" method="post" onsubmit="doRefresh()">
function doRefresh(){
location.replace("/cgi-bin/page.cgi");
//location.reload("/cgi-bin/page.cgi");
//location.reload("");
}

Suppose I have a frame like 123bottom.html and within it, I want to promt
the user for a response (in the <HEAD>) like
var ans = prompt("What is your name?");
and then reload the page (via, say window.location.reload() ?)
using the argument of the value of ans appended onto the url so that, in
effect, say, I am calling the new frame as
123bottom.html?ans=Ike
Can someone show me how I need to call the page again, itself, like this
once I have the value for ans? Thanks, Ike (himself)

I need some kind of javascript that will work in a framed page. Right now when I try to navigate to another framed page located elsewhere on my website it's pulling it up in that frame, so it's an ever expanding framed webpage. I need it to simply open the new page up in the whole browser, and not in the individual frame..

I know I can make a link that reloads a page like this:
<a href="thispage.php">Refresh this page</a>
Or, using javascript:
<a href="javascript:location.reload(true)">Refresh this page</a>
I am starting from "thispage.php", and I want to reload it as "thispage.php?action=newversion"? (This page has a form that reloads the rest of the page with new data when refreshed with the action call).
Is there a javascript technique that would do this without calling the "thispage.php" part? The page includes a function that I need to be portable to any page that I place it on.
Obviously this is very wrong but I am trying to do this:
<a href="javascript:location.reload(true) . ?action=newversion">Refresh this page</a>

Is there a difference between right clicking an iframe and reloading post reponse vs. using javascript to reload the frame? So far, the javascript route hasn't worked for me. [some context] I am writing a little bookmarklet to help me with the online registrations at my school. Here is the setup.
Load up a page on the domain. Remove all body elements. Insert an iframe. Set iframe to page for class roster search. (in iframe on school search page) Select class search options, POST the form data, and view results in frame. *This works perfectly, but I need to have it refresh results every minute or so. When I use frame.contentDocument.location.reload(true); the frame loses the post data or something and the page is broken. BUT when I just right click on the frame and select "reload frame" it works perfectly. What is the difference between rightclicking the frame and refreshing it like that vs. using javascript to reload the frame?

I'm trying to find a way to have a script communicate with a server
without having to load a new page. The idea is to have the server act
as a simple wrapper for a database, letting the client do that icky UI
stuff.
I tried the obvious, putting a frame somewhere it doesn't insult the
eye, changing its location, then accessing the new content via DOM.
What I get from IE (6) for my pains is just a rude "permission
denied". This even though I entered "localhost" as a trusted site in
IE's security setting. What's amiss?

The problem comes when a user hits the browser's reload button...the Address Bar now reads http://mydomain//mypage.html#, and this produces weird javascript errors on line 1. I tried adding a phony href (<a href="#" onclick="window.location.reload(true)"></a>) to refresh, but
obviously the click event isn't being fired when the browser's reload button is hit. Can anyone suggest an alternative?
