Onload Set Onclick And Pass Argument?
Apr 8, 2010
i have an initAll() called on window.onload within initAll() I assign a few onclick handlers to some links. However, it would be great if I could pass an argument to the handler, so I could use the same handler every time... but if I include two brackets for each handler, it executes immediately... ignoring the 'onclick' bit...
window.onload = initAll;
function initAll(){
document.getElementById('btn_events').onclick = getSpecificFeed('events');
}

How do you pass an argument to a function.
for example if you have a <span id = "test" onMouseOver ="myfunc(x)>
eg you have lots of differant span id's but you want then all to have a certain background-color with each individual on mouseover event without having to write separate code for each span id
eg <span id=" test2"onmouseover ="this.style.background ='red'>....

I am trying to pass an argument to a function to process server responses. My original line of code looked like this: [url]
This works well enough as is, but I am trying to pass arguments to the function, and everything I am reading says to contruct the code like this: [url]
Every example I have come across uses this same approach, but I keep getting the error "Expected ';'" pointing to this line and then the code fails to execute. I just cannot see where there is anything missing, and it looks pretty much identical to my examples.
I have also tried replacing the call to the function with the actual code in long-form, and the result is the same.

how to you use the result of a function as the argument for another function instead of passing the actual function to it. i.e.
function foo2(){}
function foo(func){}
foo(foo2);
This passes foo2 to foo, can I do foo(foo2()) ? i.e. is the difference between whether a function is passed or evaluated dependent on whether you use "()" after the function name?

How do I pass a PHP variable into a window.onload event function? I have a URL that I need to pass to the JavaScript file that has this function in it. The JavaScript file itself is being linked from the PHP file that will pass the variable and I've seen many examples of how this is done via embedded JavaScript, but none where someone is linking to an external JavaScript file. I suppose this is probably a trivial matter to most of you, but I've never done this before and could use some guidance!

I have been reading and practicing Javascript for the last month and so far I'm happy with it. I noticed that you can add Event Listeners and trigger a function based on that event but I also noticed that you could add an event directly to any element as an attribute, something like:
Code:
<p onclick="doSomething()">Click Me</p>
function doSomething(){
//do something
}
So my question is why would someone add and event listener instead of adding that event directly in the element (as the sample above)? The reason I'm asking is because adding event listeners involves more code:
Code:
var elementName= document.getElementById('elemenstsID');
elementName.addEventListener("click", doSomething, false);
I guess what I don't know understand is why would someone choose to add an event listener instead, I know it is more OOP but doesn't the "onclick","onload" etc., do the same thing?

how to implement it into my php pages. The best example for me to explain with, are live at facebook and youtube. Facebooks newest user status feature the "like this" link - and youtubes "favourite" link located under the player... There are tonnes more examples, and thats why im shocked that their isnt a tutorial about it anywhere...
So basically i need the user to be able to click a specific link, which then updates the database, and then shows a success message, all without refreshing the page.

I am having some issues with getting a variable from an onclick event with javascript.
$('#preview_logo').append('<img src="'+fileObj.filePath+'" height="100px" hspace="5" /> '+fileObj.name+' uploaded.<a href="javascript:;" id="dele_image" onclick="del_image('+fileObj.filePath+','+fileObj.name+');">Upload Different Image</a><br>');
This is for uploadify script for previewing an image that is uploaded, it creates the link fine, but won't trigger the function "del_image" unless I delete the parameters in the onclick, which leads me to believe it is something to do with my quoting. Here is the function:

I am trying to pass the dynamic div id to the jquery onclick function.
Here is the html code
HTML Code:
<div id = "show1" class="test">Click 1</div>
<div id = "show2" class="test">Click 2</div>
Code:
<script>
$(document).ready(function(){
$(".test").click(function(){
$("#show1").slideToggle("slow");
});
</script>
So it works for the first div not for the second one.There is something called "closest" id selector in jquery but not sure.

I wander what gets loaded the fastest (1-2 or 3) in what succession:
<head>
<script type="text/javascript">
function andAction() {
// doing stuff
}
</script>
</head>
<body onload="andAction();">
<script type="text/javascript">andAction()</script></body>
just in the head and nothing more
This I am sure off:
<head>
<script type="text/javascript">
window.onload = function andAction() {
// doing stuff
}
</script>
</head>
<script type="text/javascript">andAction()</script></body>
just in the head and nothing more (should be 1)
Third and last which is faster:
body onload or window.onload

I'm seeing a difference in behaviour between
window.onload = f();
and
<body onload="f();">
Specifically, window.onload appears to fire before all the elements of
the page have been rendered. As the difference is consistent across
IE/Moz/Opera, I'm assuming it's deliberate - can anyone point me
towards where this behaviour of window.onload is defined in the
documentation? TIA. Code:

I have created a bunch of methods for a shopping cart I am implementing on the website,and at the same time I take information from my database to get the quantity of how much stock I have left.Basically I want to do a bit of error handling, so that if you select 5 things to go into the shopping cart but the amount of items that are in stock is only 3 then an error message will come up saying "Sorry! Don't have that many items in stock!". I have a setCookie method which I created, and it is triggered by an onclick event.
I guess what I am trying to say is... Is it possible to run conditional statements on events such as "onclick" or "onload"? As it currently stands, I am going to have to do the error handling within my external js file and that really seems sloppy to me since I really want that external file to stick to cookie creation. I would really prefer to do my conditionals within my view/html file =/

If I try to append a PARAM tag twice I'm having problems:
var.medDiv = document.getElementById("myDiv");
var medObj = document.createElement("object");
var p = document.createElement("param");
p.setAttribute("FileName",this.URL);
medObj.appendChild(p);
p = document.createElement("param");
p.setAttribute("AutoStart","false");
medObj.appendChild(p); // <-- this one
medDiv.appendChild(medObj);
The line with the "this one" comment triggers IE to tell me that it has
an invalid argument. If I change the order of the PARAMs then the new
second PARAM will give me the error. If I move the setAttribute to after
the appendChild I still get the error.

Suppose I have a frame like 123bottom.html and within it, I want to promt
the user for a response (in the <HEAD>) like
var ans = prompt("What is your name?");
and then reload the page (via, say window.location.reload() ?)
using the argument of the value of ans appended onto the url so that, in
effect, say, I am calling the new frame as
123bottom.html?ans=Ike
Can someone show me how I need to call the page again, itself, like this
once I have the value for ans? Thanks, Ike (himself)

Can you pass an array reference to a constructor? I don't know if it's because the syntax is screwy or it's impossible, but the following doesn't work.
// row constructor with array called fields
function RowObject(fields)
{
this.fields=new Array();
this.fields=fields;
}
row=new RowObject(fields);
alert(row.fields[0])
