How do you create custom jQuery functions? I've tried numerous tutorials on the net and everyone results in firebug saying my function doesn't exist.

jQuery seems to be loaded correctly, as I get the alert. I don't get the tooltip, however.
What I'm trying to do, in case this is totally retarded and impossible to see, is to hover a tooltip over the clicked row instead of passing it in as a variable.

What Im trying to do is have a function that loops through all <select> tags and find ones that only have the class name of "select" and then from there they get a custom select box. From there I have a variable passed in order to get the option. I created a few elements and etc... So at this stage Im just trying to get the text from the <option> tag within each individual <li> element and I can't get it working.

I want to create a custom radio button. Basically I would like an image to act like a radio button. When selected the image border changes to highlight it. When a different image is selected it's border becomes highlighted and the previous selected image's border returns to normal. Only one image may be selected at a time. A value would then be passed in the form when submitted. I am wanting it to act like the way in print preview you can select the page orientation (portrait or landscape) by selecting the appropriate icon.
This is the code I came up with. It seems to work well but I thought someone here might know a better way to do this. To test subsitute your own images with file paths.

I am trying to create a new global variable in a function with a custom name. I need something like this:

I am not new to programming, as I know Java and C++, but I am very new to the web development.
For security reasons (so I have heard), I would like to write this site in php. At the same time, I may need some client sided code. (Or do I?) I am not at all sure.

I have written a number of functions designed to return frequency data on 1000 randomly chosen numbers using different math functions for the rounding. I would like to include all of these functions within the wrapper of another function so that only one call is needed to get returns from all of the 'inner' functions. However, while each of the functions works in isolation, the moment I wrap them in another function they stop working. :confused:

I have been learning jQuery and have been loving it so far. But can't figure out how to do the following...
1) Find the <a> inside a <ul> that has an active class.
2) Grab the value from the parent <li> and put it into a variable to be used elsewhere.
Here is the example markup...
