JQuery :: Validate -- Require Series Of Checkboxes When Named As Array[]?
Sep 23, 2009
I have a working example of jQuery validate working in the link below. The newsletter checkbox is required and working. However, the "colors" checkboxes are all named as an array ( ex: name="color[]" ), and so the problem lies in the validation code, where it uses the name of the element to require elements ( ex: newsletter: "required" ).
Code JavaScript:
<script>
$("#testform").validate({

I'm trying to set up a form that has a text field that is required to be blank - I'm dealing with form spam, and the bots are stuffing every text field with random crap. So, I have a text box that is required to be blank. But I can't get jquery.validate to understand both required and blank.the text input is has a name and id of live_check.I have added this method:
$.validator.addMethod("equalToParam", function(value, element, param) {return value == param;});
and then my rules look like this:
rules: {
first_name: "required",
last_name: "required",[code]...
But validate flags the empty text box as invalid (because it's required?)

I have three radio buttons, and when a certain radio is selected I want to show a series of checkboxes. If the other two radio buttons are selected, I want to hide the checkboxes. I *think* the problem is that I am using the wrong syntax to call the click() function on the radio "name" attribute.

I have a jQuery form in which I create a series of checkboxes:
<?php
javascript
At the moment createb.php is just testing the form
The Problem is that the serialize function only sees the first checkbox and indicates whether it has been checked or not. It does not see any of the other check boxes. Does anybody have an idea why the other check boxes do not get serialized and what to do about it?

I have a number of checkboxes and radio buttons in an HTML form that are named as arrays, ie.
<INPUT type="checkbox" ID="i1" VALUE="MILK" NAME="Q1[]">
<INPUT type="checkbox" ID="i2" VALUE="SUGAR" NAME="Q1[]">
<INPUT type="checkbox" ID="i3" VALUE="BISCUIT" NAME="Q1[]">
I need to keep the 'NAME' as an array as above because of the form processing that is used after submit.
I was really hoping to use Javascript to validate the form and make sure that each checkbox group has at least one option selected , but my javascript messes up because the 'NAME' is Q1[] as opposed to Q1. I had been using:
<script>
function validate() {
if (!(mainform.Q1[0].checked || mainform.Q1[1].checked|| mainform.Q1[2].checked)) {
alert('Please answer question 1.');
event.returnValue=false;
}}
</script>
but this only works when I name the checkboxes NAME="Q1". Is anyone aware of how to get the validate function to work (or another way of validating the form) even when the checkboxes and radio buttons are named like NAME="Q1[]".

I am looking for a push in the right direction for a few problems i am running into; my first problem is I have to create a script element that contains the function amountTotal which should return the sum of all the values in the amount array. There are no parameters for this function, and I have to add the following commands to it.
1. declare a variable named total with an initial value of 0
2. create a for loop thatloops through all of the values in the amount array, at each iteration of the loop, add the current value of the array item to the value of the total variable.
3. and after the for loop is completed, return the value of the total variable.
The amount array has already been created and populated in a list.js file, I had to first create a script element pointing to it.
This is what i had for my link to the list.js file and funtion :
I have my entire code written but i am trying to break it up and fix my problems 1 at a time: when i open the code, it does'nt display correctly ( which is another problem) but I ran the debugger and it says my total is undefined. ( this is in another section of my code), but I guess my function is wrong somewhere.

I need to validate checkoxes to make sure the user selects no more than 2 of the checkboxes. The problem I'm having is in the naming of the checkboxes. The PHP form processor portion of the page requires the checkboxes to be named "dogs[beagle]". This is causing problems with the javascript validation. This is what I have so far...since I've used just the first part of the checkbox name "dogs" the script is not working..I'm kind of new to javascript...Anyone have any suggestions on how to make this work. I have a very large form and have a couple of checkbox groups where multiple items can be selected. They are grouped as an array of checkboxes. When I post the checkbox groups, the PHP script receives duplicate values. If the group has 2 checkboxes, 4 values are posted. If it has 10 checkboxes, 20 values will be posted.
i.e:
I then submit everything to a PHP script via an Ajax call, then output the result to a div. (see below)
However, when my PHP script loops over the $_POST array, it seems that each checkbox array is duplicated, so my PHP array returns:
This happens with all my checkbox arrays, but not with an array of hidden fields for some reason.
I don't think this is a PHP problem, as it looped over everything correctly when submitting via a conventional POST. I checked the contents of $_POST, and it seems that the duplicates are being posted.

I have an array called officers and each officer is an array itself of 5 items....name, position, phone, address, email. My officer array currently has just 4 sub arrays. But I'd eventually like to make it dynamic where I can add as many as i want when filling out this form. Below is a snippet of my form structure....this is just ONE of the 4 officers
HTML Code:
<tr class="marker">
<td rowspan="2">1</td>
<td>Name: <input type="text" name="officer1[]" id="officer1[]" value="<?php echo $_SESSION['name'] ?>" /></td>
<td width="151">Position: <input type="text" name="officer1[]" id="officer1[]" value="" size="10" /></td>
<td align="right">Phone: <input name="officer1[]" type="text" id="officer1[]" value="" /></td>
</tr><tr class="marker">
<td colspan="2" align="left">Address: <input type="text" name="officer1[]" id="officer1[]" size="40" value="" /></td>
<td colspan="1" align="right">Email: <input type="text" name="officer1[]" id="officer1[]" value="<?php echo $_SESSION['email'] ?>" /></td>
</tr>
Of course it goes on with officer2[] and such....My PHP script will take and break each officer array apart and write it into a database using:
officer1[0] = officer1name
officer1[1] = officer1position
officer1[2] = officer1phone
.....etc
Then
officer2[0] = officer2name
....etc
of all the officer arrays, I'd like to validate that at LEAST one of the officer arrays has ALL 5 elements filled. I am not using Jquery's validate function so I need to stay out of that. Due to the nature of my form, Jquery's validate function wouldn't work properly.

What am I doing wrong here? Forgive me if it's blindingly obvious, but I can't get this to work:
HTML Code:

} else {
alert('no');
}
}
}

<form name='boxOrder'>

<input type='checkbox' name='photos[1]' /><br />

I need to be able to get all my checkboxes which are in an array and which have the name:
name="personselected[]"
to be all checked when a button or link is clicked.
I have looked around and can only find examples of where the checkboxes are not in arrays. The closet I have found to what I need is below but it won't work due to my checkboxes being an array.
Code:
function checkAll(field) {
for (i = 0; i < field.length; i++)
field[i].checked = true;

In my HTML, I have several of the following:
<input type='checkbox' name='right[]' id='right[]' value=Ɔ' />
All are the same except the value is set differently for each one. The
reason for the [] is so I can access the checkbox values as an array on
the processing page (when clicking 'Submit');
However, I want my Javascript code to examine these objects first. My
onclick event handler function (below) is called (I get the 'hi there'
popup), but it does nothing afterward (i.e., neither 'checkbox' alert
appears, and the handler, strangely, seems to return 'true').
I suppose my problem is that I am not specifying the checkbox array
properly. I tried several variations, but I've been working on this
problem alone for several hours and am getting nowhere. Code:

I have a pretty simple survey form, with 5 checkbox answers, one of them being "None of the Above". All 5 are part of the same question1[] array. My goal is to have a function that unchecks the other 4 boxes when None of the Above is checked. The problem is that since None of the Above is part of the question1 array, it unchecks itself. So how do I separate this None of the Above option? After all, it is still a valid answer to question 1, so I don't want it to sit in a different array just because...
Here's what I have now:
Java:
function SetValues(Form, CheckBox, Value){
var objCheckBoxes = document.forms[Form].elements[CheckBox];
var countCheckBoxes = objCheckBoxes.length;
for(var i = 0; i < countCheckBoxes; i++)
objCheckBoxes[i].checked = Value;
}
HTML:
<input id="question1" name="question1[]" type="checkbox" value="Answer 1"> 1<br>
<input id="question1" name="question1[]" type="checkbox" value="Answer 2"> 2<br>
<input id="question1" name="question1[]" type="checkbox" value="Answer 3"> 3<br>
<input id="question1" name="question1[]" type="checkbox" value="Answer 4"> 4<br>
<input id="question1" name="question1[]" type="checkbox" value="None of the above" onclick="SetValues('form1', 'question1[]', false);"> None of the above <br>
So again the issue with this code is that since None of the Above is inside the question1 array, it unchecks itself as well.
