GetElementById Returning No Length For Existing Id

Nov 27, 2004

Is there something wrong with my script? Typo?

function accite() {
bq = document.getElementById("content").getElementsByTagName("blockquote");
q = document.getElementById("content").getElementsByTagName("q");
alert(
"<blockquote /> = " + bq.length +
"<q /> = " + q.length
);
}

It's saying "document.getElementById('content') has no properties", and yes, I definitely have a <div id="content" />.

Array.length Not Returning Correct Number Of Results

Nov 10, 2010

I have a function that requires the ability to count the number of entries in an array.

I'm using the following to call my function inside an input tag:

Here is the javascript:

And when errors.length is alerted, it outputs 0. I can only figure that there is an issue when using custom named keys in an array, since this works when I use only integers, however, I have the need to use a custom key index as shown.

GetElementById Not Returning Value - Undefined

Dec 10, 2010

None of my getElementById (or other) references produce anything but "undefined." This occurs in the latest versions of Fx, IE, Chrome, and Safari, so it must be something I am doing but not not seeing here. I have boiled it down to the following without success, and wonder whether there is some add on interaction. Fx 3.6.12 has the problem with this code:
<code>
<html>
<head>
<title>This is a test of getElementById</title>
</head>
<body>
<div id="area" name="area_name">xxx</div>
<script type="text/javascript">
var divs = document.getElementsByTagName('div');
var msg = '';
msg = 'Divs[0] contains ' + divs[0] + ' with width = ' + divs[0].width + "
";
msg +='Test area width by id = ' + document.getElementById('area').width + "
";
msg +='Test area width by name = ' + document.getElementsByName('area_name').width;
alert(msg);
</script>
</body>
</html>
</code>

GetElementById() Returning Null

May 25, 2006

This function was working in Safari but not in Firefox. I was referencing a couple of elements using the forms[] array instead of getElementById(). I changed those refernces to use getElementById() and now the calculateTotals function does not work in Safari or Firefox.

So I did an alert box to see ucell and it was null. I tried two more alert boxes for the id I was passing to getElementById and for the id of the actual element on the page (which was also created dynamically). They were both identical. The element is created in the onload event, and I am not calling the calculateTotals function until there is onchange event on a text box. So it is not that the element has not been created yet. . AJAX :: GetElementById Returning 'undefined' In Attempt

Sep 12, 2011

I can not for the life of me get an ajax example/tutorial to work. I have tried dozens including prototype library and JQuery.

Here is my latest attempt:

As you can see I am trying to alert the variable teamH but I keep getting an undefined in the alert. I also tried a static drop down and I received the same undefined alert.

How I get that variable to contain my drop down choice?

Element.getElementById Instead Of Document.getElementById

May 13, 2004

I want to restrict getElementById to search children of a specific element instead of searching the entire document, in the same way that I can do getElementsByTagName using a specific element as the parent.

In this particular instance the parent is a table and the elements I'm interested in are all TDs, so I did the basic getElementsByTagName('TD') off the table and looped through this array checking the IDs. However, I'm suspecting that the browser can do getElementById faster than I can do a loop in javascript. Is there a neater way to do this? For now, I'll settle for IE-only solutions, though it would be nice to have things work in generic browsers.

GetElementById Element Null - Error Stating "getElementById("ballElement") Is Null

Iframe And Existing Id Within

Apr 13, 2010

I have an iframe. I load a page within it. The page I load is a php page that I build with a table with the id of 'readmail_table'. My iframe is 'readmail_frame'. Someone clicks on a message title outside of the iframe and I load the contents of the message in the iframe from the database in my table. Sometimes this takes longer than others depending on how large the message is. What I am doing here is letting the contents load then calculating the width and height of the table and then increasing the iframe's size so there are no scrollbars. This works 98% of the time but I ran into an issue where the table does not exist yet in the iframe and the JS code errors out. So what I did then was add a local var, set it to false then had a while loop check for the table and once it finds it, set the var to false and run my code. Again, mixed results. Sometimes this works then others I get that the table id I am looking for is null but my if statement in the while loop is checking to see if != null

[Code]...

Like I said, most of the time this works exactly how I need it. I just need a fool proof way to determine that this table is in fact on the page. I am not sure why it works sometimes and not others since I am looping until it is there

Check For Existing Window

Apr 7, 2006

I need to check for a particular window which I opened as a popup,
already exists, before I try to open the same again. I achieved that
with the following code. So this is fine.

var myWin = null;
function openPopup(aURL){
if (( myWin==null) || myWin.closed) {
myWin = open(aURL,"myWin");
}

/* Window is already opn, thus maps the url to the same window
and give focus */
else {
myWin.location = aURL;
myWin.focus();
}
}

Now my problem is I need to do a similar check for a page thats been
href to the top.location
top.location=aURL;

In this situation if this same code runs again, i need to check if this
window is already open, and if so not to open it. Can it be done in a
similar way like the above.

Creating An Existing Function?

Feb 11, 2010

I came across Marijn's helper function again called forEach. It does just what it sounds like it does, and is one of those things one would consider adding to their own personal little library like getElementsByClassName...My question is, I've heard/seen that Mozilla (and only Mozilla at this point) indeed HAVE a forEach function, and I do most of my beginning testing in a recent-stable Mozilla browser, so I'm not 100% sure but I think the Mozilla forEach might work... what happens if I write my own and I keep the name?

So if there's some default forEach that the browser natively understands, and then I have a function in my lib that has the same name, does mine take precedence over the native one, or not? Is it just safer giving libraries slightly weird names so new in-built functions can't possibly interfere?So also, if later browsers end up implementing the newer Javascript (2?) that as I hear, will implement a getElementsByClassName, would this break, or ignore, everyone's pre-made getElementsByClassName, assuming they are called the same name?

JQuery :: Replicate An Existing Website ?

Mar 30, 2009

What makes this easy is I'm trying to replicate an existing website: BT's Personal Site

The menu of Packages / Phone, etc is very nice. Not only does the menu auto scroll, but also reacts to mouseover in a lovely manner (thereafter going back to auto scroll if there is no user input).

I've spent the afternoon going through all of JQuery's plugin library but I couldn't find something similar. I found individual scripts that I could use to mirror the auto rotate, but that meant integrating the rollover wouldn't work. Anyone got ideas on how to implement this?

A pre-existing script would be great if there is one(!) Otherwise, real simple advice as I'm a bit of a noob to jQuery. If there is no pre-existing script or the alterations will take a bit of effort, I'm happy to compensate if there is an expert for hire (depending on rates obviously!)

JQuery :: SVG - Draw Using An Already Existing Svg Document?

If this is possible, please point me in the right direction or provide some example code. I am currently using: $('#fp').svg({loadURL: '../rockwell-working2-merged.svg'}); Which displays the entire svg.

Checking For An Existing Instance Of A Js File?

Nov 2, 2010

I was looking in the firebug debugger and noticed that my main .js file was somehow being called twice, but I don't see where. There are dozens of files involved in this particular problem, so I think the best way to go about solving it is to test - in run time - if my js file is already in place on the page, do nothing - otherwise call it. This is pseudo that I have monkeying around with but it's not working.

Code:

function checkFile() {
var fileExist = new fileExist();
fileExist.onLoad = isPresent;

[code]....

I thought this would work, perhaps it's because of an argument I need to pass in to checkFile(ZYX) but not sure.
