Formatting Specified String In Textarea Field
Nov 8, 2006
I have such a text
<input type="text" name="search_txt" value="">
<textarea name="txt_m">
My hobby is bicycle.
My hobby is driving a car.
</textarea>
I would like to bold and color a specified text
in input field search_txt for instance "hobby" string.
How to do that in JS?

I'm about to build a custom CMS using PHP, but I was hoping to add text formatting (bold, italic and maybe inline links) to a textarea in a secure admin section.
I was wondering whether it's possible to use Javascript to allow the user to highlight some text and click a button which will cause the script to write the appropriate HTML tags into the textarea.
By the way, I'm new to Javascript so be gentle.

I have a Number as a String. It goes from 1 to 999 but I need to set the format so that it has leading Zeros. So 1 is 001 and 2 is 002 and 99 is 099.
Is there a way to do this in JavaScript?
Thanks,
~Dave

I have some fields on my form that are auto-populating with a difference from 2 input fields using onChange, easy stuff. The correct value is stored in the DB, to 3 decimal places (correct, since data type is a float with 3 decimals).The challenge I am having is to get the number that is auto-displaying on the form to format to 3 decimals. For example, when I enter the first number at 44.8, and a second number of 44.666, the onChange command displays '0.13400000000000034'. This is saved in the db correctly as, '0.134' and once the form is submitted the correct value of 0.134 displays since it is pulling directly from the db. I would like to format the onChange display with the toFixed command so the extra decimals don't show onChange.

I need to insert a string into a textarea, where the cursor is when a button is clicked. I tried google for this one, but all I found was how to change the text in the textarea, and how to append something to the end, but not how to insert where the cursor is. Does anyone know how to, or have a script that does this?

Using js, I would like to write a single string of several phrases into a textarea such that each phrase is aligned in order, one above the other. I tried a function that receives the string argument and splits it into an array. With a 'for-loop', elements of the array are assigned in turn to the textarea value. This gives me only the last element ('GROUP BY room') displayed , since it was the last assigned. My placing of a '+', a break("<br>") or a newline( ) didn't help. To get the idea, the following piece of script displays the string as broken, stacked, but not in the textarea where I want it:
$Statement = "SELECT all data,
FROM Departments,
WHERE grouphead = 'Milo',
GROUP BY rooms";

[URL]...lightweight text editor. I want to be able to submit without a page reload and I can't seem to figure out how to override whatever code the author created to disable the value of the text area field unless the form is formally submitted using the submit button. Additionally I don't seem to be able to attach any events to the submit button. I'm not sure you will be able to help me but thought it's worth a shot. Here's the form:

I have a text area in one of my forms that I want to control the character size of. In short, I want to keep the text area to 10,000 characters.
What I Have Found: I have found a number of scripts that will control the character length of the text area, while you are typing.
The Problem: If you cut and paste a document that contains 15,000 characters into the text area that is limited to 10,000 characters, it will still take all of the information (i.e. the 15,000 characters), as opposed to limiting/cutting it off.
Does anyone know of a script that will control the overall character length whether it be inserted via key stroke or is copy and pasted into the text area? Or possibly point me in the right direction?

In the text area, I have given it an id called refnote and ive used the text() to get the text in it. However, the problem is setting the retrieved text in a hidden form field.
$('form').submit(function(){
alert ($('#refnotes').text());
return false;
});

so I have a widget that will let you get alerts texted to a phone. I am trying to store the info, but I can't get the user's input into my javascript function shown below:
onClick="collect('info', 'nname=' + document.getObjectByID('Nname').value + ';num=12345;
How can I get the content as a string of a text field and use that in my function? Like I said, this is probably a relatively easy question for most, but I cannot figure it out :/

I am trying to find a way to get more than one characters pasted on html text field (input type=text), using onkeydown or onkeypress, I am NOT interested in onkeyup(it works), so please do not suggest me this solution. Also I am not interested in Jquery, I do not like to use it. I need solution to work with all browsers.
I am able to do that if you type one character, by taking the character of the event, but till now I am unable to get group of characters come from the paste (ctrl+V) or by mouse.You can look at Facebook search menu that shows auto complete results, it works on events: onkeydown and onkeypress and you notice that you get the result before you release your finger, try to paste something (more than one character) and you get the result before releasing finger, how? Onkeypress and onkeydown do not show first thing you paste or type because they happen before the text being added to text field.
Code:
<input type="text" id="targetTextField" onkeydown="CapturePastedString(this.id)" /> <script> function CapturePastedString(id){ var targetTextField=document.getElementById(id); // below I need to capture the pasted string like: var pasted_string= function(){.....} targetTextField.value=pasted_string; } </script>
