Feb 13, 2007
I've created the code below which automatically adds two fields together (drop-down boxes),without the need for a submit or input button.Now,I am trying to do the same again, but this time instead of having drop-down boxes,i need to have text input boxes.(eventually i will be adding monetary values together).

I am trying to calculate text fields from results of php query. My fields come from the query as amount1, amount2.... What I need is for JS to Sum those fields dynamically, I already did code for when i have all the values and for when the text field name is the same, but never for query results where the names are different. This is what I have so far but its not working
function calculatesumexcon() {
var a, total = 0;
var countJS = "<?=$count?>"; <-- variable of php that gives me the number of rows I am getting on the query
var i ;
for ($i=0;$i<countJS;$i++){
var elements = document.getElementsById('amount' + i);
for(a=0; a<elements.length; a++){
total += (parseFloat(elements[a].value));
}}
document.getElementById("totalextracon").value = total ;
}

I have a form where I have to calculate a future date (end date) from two fields. First the start date and then the number of months. So if the start date is 1/1/2011 and the months given is 12 then the end date should return as 12/31/2011. I can't figure out why it's not returnign a value.

I have a few html fields in a form that use PHP in order to calculate a combined value and then inserting it into the database. However, I would want that value to be displayed to the user as well before they insert it, just so they can verify that the value is correct. But how do I go about and do this?
It is probably very simple, but I'm a PHP programmer and have very little knowledge of JavaScript. Basically this is what I would want:
<field 1> -20 +(or -, depending on user input) <field 2>
Result of that to be displayed in <field 3>
However, I only want the -20 to calculated when something is entered in <field 1> so that it does not say -20 in the output field before the user even started typing a value.

writing a function that will dynamically calculate filed values.I have a PHP-generated form which may have a varying number of fields. I need to:
1. calculate the line total for each row -- unitprice * units = linetotal
2. calculate total of all linetotals.
I have named my fields as follows:
unitprice[1], unitprice[2]... , units[1], units[2], ...
I have the following calculate function:
function calculateOld() {
// get both values
unitprice = document.forms["invoice"].unitprice.value;[code].....
This does calculate what I need but only if I have up to two rows. I need to make the function dynamically count how many rows there are, and calculate the linetotal for each row. And here's where my limited JS knowledge brings me to a halt.I have been thinking about what this new and dynamic function should look like, but that's the best I could produce...
function calculate() {
var unitprice[i]= document.forms["invoice"].unitprice[i].value;
var units[i]= document.forms["invoice"].units[i].value;[code]....
how things are done, don't just give me the code.

1) I need to calculate a total dynamically.I have an input with the price of a product and next the amount. As the users inserts the amount I would like the total box to give the amount*price number. So if the price is 3 and user inserts:
1 - then total should display 3. Then the user inserts 0 (amount is now 10) total should display 30.The problem is that when i ask for the value in the onkeyup event of the amount input i don't get the value with the last key (same with onkeypress event). I could add that number (if it's a number) or see if it's backspace or any char but there should be an easy answer.I solved it by setting a timeout and using a callback function so as to have the latest value of the amount but it's an awfull solution (though not expensive in code).
2) Avoid focus reset when i update the value of the amount.I've managed to add commas on the fly to the amount like when the user types "1000" the number displayed is "1,000". In firefox it works great but in IE and Chrome it resets the focus each time i update the field. So when you try to move your cursor back it returns to the last position (maybe because the value of the input is changed).
here's my code:
Code:
function updatePrice(){
setTimeout(function(){callback()}, 10);
}
[code]....

Here's a sample division:
Code:
<div style="padding:0 0 0 40px; background:url(comment-icon.png) left center no-repeat;">some text</div>
I wonder how I can calculate the padding-left:40px dynamically so that any icon I choose the padding-left value changes according to the image width.

I want to give the user the abillity to add extra fields as needed.
I've got it working in IE (surprsingly this works in IE but not in
Firefox), however, basically I have an input field for a paragraph. If
the user decides they want two paragraps then they can click an image
and a new textarea field is show that allows them to add another
paragraph. The fields are named as an array for example name="para[0]"
the next one would then be name="para[1]". Firefox creates the field
and shows it to the user however when you submit the form the new field
does not come through. My array of paragraphs consists only of the
original number I started with. Any added by the javascript are lost.
Again IE this works fine, Firefox it works till you submit the form.
Any ideas?

The site I am working on has a few forms that allow the user to add new form fields (textbox, textarea, etc.) dynamically. I am using a structure smiler to:
<form>
<label>Name : </label> <input type = "text" / >
<label>Age : </label> <input type = "text" />
<span id = "add_field"> Add Field </span>
</form>
<script type = "text/javascript">
$(function(){
//create a new field then append it before the add field button
$("#add_field").click(function(){
var new_field = " <label>Name : </label> <input type = "text" / >";
new_field+="<label>Age : </label> <input type = "text" />";
$(this).before(new_field);
});});
As you can see I create the field using javascript and just insert it before the add field button. However I have seen lots of other sites have a smiler sort of function but they seem to make an ajax call for the field as they use a loading-type animation during the few seconds it takes for the field to be added. My questions are : Which is a better way of doing this type of thing? And why is one better than the other? If it is better to create the field client-side should I change how I am doing it? Instead of creating a string representing html and appending it should I be doing it a different way?

Name: <input type='text' name="s1[name]" id="s1[name]">

There can be any number of 'groups' but I would want to apply some validation for each item in a group. I can only see that the validation is done by specifying a id? however as the id's are going to be dynamically created how can I do this? can you validate for a css class?

I have a form with 3 fields that will allow a user to search a database of clients by either name, email, or client id number. However, I would like the user to only be able to put information in one field. It can be done be either deleting the other two fields when the user inputs information into a different field, or by disabling the other two fields when the user enters information in one (and also frees up all fields if the user ends up deleting what they entered).
Below is a start of what I had. Basically, it will disable the fields when I mouse out of them but won't re-enable them when I mouse back in. As you can see, I tried various combinations of events. (My code below also doesnt null out the other fields when the user opts to use a different field than the one they first began to enter info in).
<html>
<head>
<script type="text/javascript">
function makeDisable($ID){
var x=document.getElementById($ID)

My client wants to upload multiple files to the server using the FILE type input of the form. Their requirement says that once they click the browse button of the FILE INPUT type , besides file browsing window another FILE FIELD is added at the bottom of this one. and when the user clicks the browse button of second, it adds another until the user clicks the UPLOAD button to submit the form.
I dont know it is possible or not ???? if yes then please tell me how.
The alternate way is to give drop down menu with number and when the USER chooses certain number then ..that amount of FILE FORM FIELDS will be added. i.e if user chooses 3 then three file fields are there to upload 3 files at a time.
I have written a script that i am pasting here, but when i choose the drop down menu and select value the FILE FIELDS are shown but the original drop down menu vanishes..
Please review my code and modify it or refer some script to me.
IF The first choice is possible, i mean adding each FILED by browse button click , then tell me its code, other wise modify this code that i am pasting or give me some link to download a premade script. Code:

I am trying to assign values to a bunch of form fields. However, I don't want to loop through EVERY field in the form, just a specific subset of fields. The fields I am trying to change are all named similarly myField1, myField2, myField3.So, my thought is that I would like to use a for loop and loop through the appropriate fields by simply incrementing a variable and appending it to the end of the string "myField" in order to change the appropriate field.How can I evaluate "myField + iterator" into a useable reference to change the value of said field?

I can retrieve the value of the dynamically generated fields using $_POST in I.E., but it doesn't work in Firefox (no value is returned).
