Background Scrolls Slower Than The Foreground
Sep 16, 2011
I have seen this on websites before where the website will be one page. And you have to scroll down our sideways to view the different sections of the website like "about", "contact" etc. But when you scroll the background scrolls slower than the foreground. King of like how the android phones work when you swipe home screens and the background moves just a little bit. I heard it was done using JavaScript but I have Google my brain off and cannot find much on it.

I'm having difficulty in explaining why the following code runs slower in IE9 than IE8! (Testing in Win 7 IE9 both 32 bit and 64 bit running in VMWare 3 virtual machine on OS X 10.6.7)
Here's some test code that runs smoothly in about half a second in (latest) FF/Chrome/Safari on OS X, WinXP, and Win7 plus IE7 & 8 on WinXP (for simplicity I removed the tweak that makes it work in IE6).
For some reason I can't explain, it's awful in IE9, slow and clunky. Reducing the time for the setTimeout makes it a bit quicker but no less jerky.
I've tried removing and benchmarking a number of what might be the choke points (Math.min for example ... all with no change.
Here's the test code ...

I've been using jquery for some time, and was very excited about the improvements in jquery 1.4 I have found however, that in one particular instance, jquery 1.4 seems to be performing slower than 1.3x, to the point that it has forced me to downgrade the script. I use jquery heavily throughout my web application; in this particular case, when a very large block of html consisting of a bunch of <tr>s is .appended (or .htmled, tried both) to a table, jquery 1.4 in firefox will give the "unresponsive script" error, prompting the user to stop, debug, or continue. The same block of html works perfectly fine in jquery 1.32 (and quite fast too). I haven't had time to do too much experimentation, as this is in a production environment, and thus downgrading was necessary as it was breaking the page, but I would love to figure out why this is happening so that I may optimize the code sometime in the near future. Have the improvements to .html resulted in code that causes higher cpu usage, or that would have a much higher overhead on longer strings? I've commented much of the code around the call, so that it pretty much consists of an ajax call that returns a chunk of html, which is inserted to a table (that I first empty). I thought it might be something with event bindings that occur after the insertion, but removal of these event bindings does not resolve the unresponsive script error. It seems the .html or .append is doing it. Note that this code, as is, works perfectly in jquery 1.3, even with event bindings, etc.
Does anyone have any ideas? My next step was going to be to try returning the entire table including the <table> tags, and doing a replace instead of an append, but if anyone has other suggestions to try, please let me know. Also, just as an aside, what do you guys consider the 'best practice' to be when returning dynamic data for a table (server side sorting, filtering etc from a db) ? Do you return just the data in json, and repeatedly clone a row element, replacing the values in each row (thus decreasing the size of the ajax call, but increasing the client side processing), or return the full html, and replace the innerHTML of the table?

On my page are several links which if the user clicks on it opens a div-box below with some text in it. The only thing that doesn’t work is that the page is always scrolled to top because of the onClick Event. Is there any possibility to stop scrolling the page to top? Unfortunately I have to use the onClick Event

I am looking to recreate a form function like this website: [URL] What happens when you click the answer to the question the form scrolls to the next function. I would love to know how this is done. I am not a javascript developer but having looked into this the form uses scriptaculous.js and prototype.js. Is there an online form builder or a program out there that can re-create this or is it just a simple bit of javascript added onto a form?

I have a jQuery script that loads and displays a small window on a mouse hover. I use jQuery AJAX to load the content on that window. Having that, I noticed that loading the response from php file (which does not have a php code, only the file has .php on its name) is slower than the same file content with .html name. I wonder if this is a common problem or there is some issue with my codes. I will post my code if needed (if that seems to be the problem).Note: I mentioned that there is no php code in the php file because I am only testing the performance currently. After it is developed, there will be (obviously) php code in it.

I need to find out how to center an element on a form that scrolls. I have code (below) that displays a dialog, but I can't figure out how to make sure the dialog is centered on the page when the dialog displays as the user scrolls down the page. The dialog is displayed from a click on a href tag. I thought I could get the x,y coordinates where the href was click, but can't figure out how to center since the href can be at either the upper or low end of the page when it shown.
<script type="text/javascript">
var xCoord;
var yCoord;
$(document).ready(function () {
// if user clicked on button, the overlay layer or the dialogbox, close the dialog
$('a.btn-ok, #dialog-overlay, #dialog-box').click(function () {

So it took me forever but I finally found a floating menu that works with a horizontally scrolling page - but of course, there's still a little bug. View the page here: [URL]
As you can see, the more you scroll right, the more the menu "compacts" itself, eventually disappearing altogether.
You can view the code & script codes by viewing the source of the page.

I have an Iframe which loads an articles html page with anchors at the start of every article. To the right is fixed div that has different article links. The customer can scroll down and read all the articles. I would like the links to change to active, visited etc. when the anchors come into view. I was thinking it would be something like this:
Code:
function changelink(){
if(window.location.href='#article3'){
document.getElementById('historylink').style.color='green';
historylink.style.background='url(sources/active.jpg)center';
[Code]...
Haven't tried it yet because it dosen't take into account the visited state of the links so I figured I need some advice from the skript Gods.

I'm building a site right now that has a left column navigation and the navigation is nested inside a div, which is nested inside a table cell (i.e., <td>). I'm using JQuery to make it so when the user scrolls down the page, the div slides down smoothly and always stays at the top of the page. I have this working just fine, but when I change resolutions (i.e., 1024x768), the div scrolls over the bottom of the page, which is what I don't want. How can I calculate in order for the div to know when it hast reached the bottom of the table cell? I tried using outerHeight to calculate the height of the table cell and then subtracting the height of the div from it, but I'm clearly doing it wrong because it's still not working. You can view the page I'm referring to at [URL].
The JS code I'm using is below.
var name = "#scroller";
var menu_top_limit = 0;
var menu_bottom_limit = $('#holder > #scroller').outerHeight() - 560;
var menu_top_margin = -15;
var menu_shift_duration = 500;
var menuYloc = null;
$(window).scroll(function(){
// Calculate the top offset, adding a limit
offset = menuYloc + $(document).scrollTop() + menu_top_margin;
// Limit the offset to 0 pixels...
// This keeps the menu within it's containing TD boundaries
if(offset < menu_top_limit){
offset = menu_top_limit;
// Give it the PX for pixels:
offset += "px"; }
/*else if(offset > menu_bottom_limit){
offset = menu_bottom_limit;
offset += "px";
}*/
// Animate:
$(name).animate({top:offset},
{duration:menu_shift_duration,queue:false});

I am looking for a javascript way to make a table header visible as the user scrolls down my web page. The table header is produced by php from a mysql db. The table is populated by results based on the user filter inputs.
see: [URL]
The table cells can be any width depending on the search results. I think a copy of the table header needs to be made and this would then float at the top of the page staying at the top no matter how far the user scrolls down, so that it's position would depend on the scroll bar position.

I have a website on a Shared Server at work that I'm trying to get an iFrame to view the contents of a lengthy .txt file and I need it to AUTOMATICALLY scroll to the BOTTOM of the .txt file when the webpage opens. I have a script that will scroll .htm files to the bottom but I can't get it to automatically Scroll a .txt file to the bottom (Best I've gotten is a button that you click which scrolls to the bottom) but I need it to Automatically do it when the page opens.
If it matters... My .txt file is actually a .LOG written in notepad with the 1st word ".LOG" which automatically inserts the Time & Date Each time the file is opened and it opens with the Cursor Automatically at the Bottom of the page.

The div containing the planes photos doesn't scroll to the top of the containing div but sits at the bottom. The first two btns. work as expected so I don't understand why the last btn doesn't.

What I am trying to do is create a slider that auto scrolls 3-4 images from right to left with no controls. And if the user hovers over it, it stops so they can read the content that is featured. Everywhere I search there are bunch of plugins i.e. easyslider, s3slider, etc. that have tons of code that is greek to me. I tried using the easyslider code and changing things around for it to do what I want, but I was unsuccessful.
