Alphanumeric With Optional Dashes

Jul 23, 2005

I'm trying to debug my expression that matches an alphanumeric with any
number of dashes (including none), except at the ends and obviously
disallowing two or more consecutive dashes.

Here it is: /w+(-?w+)*/

Test cases that I expect to pass are failing:

"01234abcdef" true

"0123-412-8370" false (should've been "true")

"asdkfjakfj" true

"0-1" false (should've been "true")

"-" false

"--" false

"-ABC123" false

"00230-" false

"ABC-123" false (should've been "true")

"1-" false

"111223333" true

Would anyone lend a hand?

How To Print Line Of Dashes

Apr 3, 2010

I've searched and searched. It seems the sages, and experienced programmers think var dashes = "------------"; is the easiest way. Certainly there must be some simple (or not as simple) way of printing a line of dashes in javascript without declaring a variable as "----------" (that's just sloppy)I don't mean to be rude but this should be easy. Right? Or must I resort to a loop (probably an integer count) that ends at a declared number like 10 or 20?

Why Won't Dashed-line Drawing Fuction Count The Dashes Correctly

Jul 2, 2009

I adapted Bresenham line drawing algorithm to draw a dashed line. I want to count the number of dashes. The dashes extend from one city on a map to another city. I don't want the dashes to obscure the city marker which is a small black dot, so I added some logic to skip dashes at the start of the line and at the end of the line. But this logic is confounding my attempt to count the dashes and I haven't been able to figure out why. The function should return the number of dashes as 'count'.

Regular Expression For URL With Optional Domain?

Feb 4, 2010

I am creating a regular expression for a URL where the domain name (i.e. .com|.edu etc) is optional. That is both http://xyz and http://xyz.com should be valid. If <.> is present then com|edu|.. will be there; but if <.> is absent then com|edu|.. will not be there. Also there can be any number of <.>, but every <.> will be followed by characters. So in other words the string can't end with <.>, it should only end with [a-zA-Z0-9]. So far I have created the following part -

var url=document.myform.addr.value;
var str="^(http|https)://(([a-zA-Z0-9.-]+)*[a-zA-Z0-9-]+.(com|edu|gov|[a-zA-Z]{2})|[a-zA-Z0-9]+$)";
var regEx = new RegExp(str);

Simple Listbox OPTIONAL Value Calculation ?

Mar 14, 2009

Trying to figure out a problem with the "Optional" values in a list box so I am going to keep it as simple as I can..

I am trying to calculate the optional value of a list box in stead of programming it the long way around.

I created a list box with several peoples names, like John, Sue, and Mary.

I have assigned each name a numeric "optional" values

I know the code in the list box should be:

Normally, I would code this along the lines of:

But I want to figure out how to select the Optional Value from the list, and multiply it by time instead of doing the SELECTEDNAMELISTBOX=="John" route..

JQuery :: Validate Optional Fields Only When Data Is Entered?

Oct 13, 2010

I'm using jQuery validation on a form and I can't get it to only validate optional fields if the user enters something (should recognize the difference between this and the default value of the field, for text input fields). I know this is built in (I think) but I must be doing something wrong.

For example, phone number is optional but I want it to validate if the user enters something. Code for the phone in the JS file is:

jQuery.validator.addMethod("phone", function(phone_number, element) {
phone_number = phone_number.replace(/s+/g, "");
return this.optional(element) || phone_number.length > 9 &&
phone_number.match(/^(1-?)?(([2-9]d{2})|[2-9]d{2})-?[2-9]d{2}-?d{4}$/);

[Code]....

When I just put "phone" as the class it validates the field even if it is not edited by the user at all. For the required fields I put "required" as the class to validate them but I just read in another post that this is not necessary with the plugin...? I guess I am not sure whether the field should be define as optional by a class or in the JS file, and if it's the latter, how to do that.

Parallel Array Multiple Search - Mandatory And Optional

Sep 18, 2010

I have 4 arrays that all contain data linked by the index. I have 3 drop down boxes on a web page that give the user 3 ways to search for data. The top one is mandatory the other two are optional. I've managed to create the code to search using the mandatory box but cant figure out how to expand the search.

Here is the function that deals with the search data:
function findFlights(){
var yourAirline = readTheAirline();
var result = 'Here are your flights <BR>';
var choose = 'Choose your destination';

for (var index = 0; index < flightTimes.length; index++){
var flight = flightDestinations[index];
var airline = flightOperators[index];
if (yourDestination == flight){
var b = flightTimes[index];
var c = flightDestinations[index];
var d = flightOperators[index];
var e = flightFares[index];
var message = b + ' to ' + c + ' operated by ' + d + '. £' + e + '.';

result = result + message + '<BR>';
}if (yourDestination == choose){
result = 'Please choose a destination city from the destination menu and then click Find flights again.';
}}displayMessage(result);}

JQuery :: Validation Plugin - Optional Field For User Entry

Oct 21, 2010

In a registration form middleName field is optional. When the users enters his/her middleName, then it should validate that field. I have used the following code to achieve the above scenario, but it is not working.

$("#middleName").rules("add", {checkName: true, required: false, messages: {checkName: "Please enter a valid middle name"} });
jQuery.validator.addMethod("checkName",
function(value, element) {
var regExp = new RegExp(/^[a-zA-Z0-9s|,|.|-|']+$/);
return regExp.test(value);
},
"Please enter a valid name."
);
How to achieve the above scenario.

Non-English RegExp For Removing Non-alphanumeric?

Feb 24, 2011

I have used this script:Code:someString.replace(/[^A-Za-z0-9 .]/g, '')...many times to remove non-alphanumeric and non "." and " " characters but am having to re-think its use as I start working on non-American English languages for string replacement. The reason for this is that this RegExp also pulls out special characters such as "ó" and "ñ". I'm not certain, but I think it would also remove all double-byte characters such as various Asian-language words.Has anyone run into this problem and have they found a simple coding solution to catch all non-English special characters?

RegEx - Match Non-alphanumeric Characters But Ignore?

Jul 18, 2009

We have been using the following js/regex to find and replace all non-alphanumeric characters apart from - and + outputString = outputString.replace(/[^w|^+|^-]*/g, "");

However it doesn't work entirely - it doesn't replace the ^ and | characters. I can't help but wonder if this is something to do with the ^ and | being used as meta-characters in the regex itself.

I've tried switching to use [W|^+|^-], but that replaces the - and +. I thought that possibly a lookahead assertion may be the answer, but I'm not very sure how to implement them.

3) It cannot contain a space or other special characters

I want the validate to happen in real-time. I have the first rule working great. Here is the code for that:

if((username.value.length < 6) || (username.value.length > 12))
