Kill A Script After A Time Interval?
Jul 16, 2011
I have a script that runs when the page is loaded, but I'd like it stop running after a specific time interval.
I think I need to use this:
var t=setTimeout("javascript statement",milliseconds);
I understand the milliseconds, that's the time delay. What I don't get is what do I put inside the "javascript statement" to kill that specific script?[code]...

I want to have a random change of the border and text color of certain DIVs (with a certian class) after a specific time interval. I managed to get a random color change after the time interval, but I'd like to just have a set of colors, which the random generator can choose from. So here's my code:
Code:
<script type="text/javascript">
$(document).ready(function(){
var intervalId = setInterval(function() {
int i = (int)(Math.random() * 4);
[Code].....
So "i" can be a number from 0 to 3 and depending on this number, the variable "col" is a specific colorvalue which the border and text color will animate to. That was my thought, but something about the random color generator doesn't work

My goal is to create a mouse action that makes an image follow the cursor, but ONLY when the cursor is above another element (in this case another image). If I just add "onMouseOver="cursorInit()" it works great to start the object once the cursor is over the second image, but how do I make the event die onMouseOut? I think I need another function, but I don't know how to kill these events. Code:

I have a problem on my website that I'm doing for a company, they have a Wordpress blog, and the blog page is set as a static home page, which is great. The problem is, the Atlantica theme puts a gallery on much of the blog, and worse, makes an even bigger gallery on the Home page (lucky me:-/). With some twiddling, I quickly figured out that I could just set the div "gallery" to "display: none" via CSS, and wah-LA! it disappeared..until 5 seconds later, when the error message "jCarousel: No width/height set for items. This will cause an infinite loop. Aborting..." continues to re-assert itself, provides an OK to out of the error message, and keeps pestering me again.
I know next to nothing about the format of JScript. I've tried if/then statements, but once again, I'm so new at this, that I haven't gotten that far. I'm a whiz at CSS, but Javascript is kind of kicking my tail.

I am on WinXP. The following page works perfectly in IE6. For Netscape
7.0, I have to move off of the image and then back on to get the fade to
take effect, and with Mozilla (latest version) a series of close mouseovers
will cause the screen to go wacko.
Does anyone have input on how to get Netscape/Mozilla to work with a fade
like this?

I am looking for a function that will add spaces in a string in a certain manner:
tmpStr: 123456789123 (always 12 digits)
the desired outcome is: 123 456 78 91 23
Do anyone of you have a neat fuction for that? I found one question in this forum [URL]... but since I do have a different interval for my spaces I have not been able to make it work.

In my js application, consecutive ajax calls are made while running in a for loop. I am using prototype.js for AJAX calls. now if I don't call any function on onComplete event then everything is ok. but if I do so, then the function I have set in an onComplete event is invoked once or twice. rest of the time it doesn't work. the code is like the follwing:
/**
* Moves selected options from source to destination select list.
* @param source select list, destination select list
* @return none
*/
function moveMultipleOption(sourceListId, destListId)// single or multiple based on selection
{
var sourceListBox = document.getElementById(sourceListId);
var destListBox = document.getElementById(destListId);
var sourceTableName ;
var destTableName;
if(sourceListId == 'firstList')
{
sourceTableName = "left_table";
destTableName = "right_table";
}
if(sourceListId == 'secondList')
{
sourceTableName = "right_table";
destTableName = "left_table";
}
for(i = sourceListBox.options.length-1; i>=0; i--)
{
//for() loop is used for finding how many options are selected.
if(sourceListBox.options[i].selected)
{
addOption(destListBox, sourceListBox.options[i].text, sourceListBox.options[i].value);
sourceListBox.options[i].selected = false;
AjaxRequest(sourceListBox.options[i].value,sourceListBox.options[i].text,sourceTableName,destTableName);
}
}
}
/**
* Calls to server through Ajax
* @param option value, option text, source table name and destination table name.
* @return none
*/
function AjaxRequest(i,textValue,sourceTableName,destTableName)
{
var url = '/run.php/SelectList'
var pars = 'cmd=singleTransfer' + '&itemValue=' + i + '&textValue=' + textValue + '&sourceTableName=' + sourceTableName + '&destTableName=' + destTableName;
var myAjax = new Ajax.Request(
url,
{
method: 'get',
parameters: pars,
onComplete: showResponse
}
);
}
function showResponse(originalRequest)
{
// CODE IN THIS FUNCTION DOES NOT ALWAYS EXECUTE.
}
Now i have solved the problem for the time being by making a single call to ajax for the whole loop. Now my question is : what is causing this problem? Can I give time delays between two consecutive requests?

I'm trying to create an object that will update itself at a set interval, but I'm having a scope issue when using the "setInterval" or "setTimeout" function.
[Code]...
But I get the same result. Ultimately, I'd rather have the setTimeout (or setInterval) to be within the object, so that each instance of the object will fire the update on itself. I had a similar issue in this thread but I can't seem to figure out how to adapt it for this instance.

I have a list that is constantly being updated via ajax, but I want the updating to stop when the cursor is over the list, making it easier for the user to select an item in the list.I have this:
<script type="text/javascript">
var initList = setInterval(function(){
$.post('system/list.php', function(list){
[code]....
The first interval lets the list update when the page loads, instead of having to wait for the user to mouseout on the list to start the updating.The above does not work for me, the list updatescontinuallyregardless of mouseout.

Code:

Here is a bit of a conundrum, it you have an interval timer and it is interrupted say by a clearInterval call, how can you tell how far along the interval the timer was when it was canceled? When I look at an object that is an setInterval() event timer, I get -1 as the output when I valueOf() the variable. What I am wondering is if for example the following
Code:
var thisIntervalTimer = setInterval("onceAminute()",60000); the interval of one minute passes between updates, apart from setting up a tracking variable to track milliseconds, does the thisIntervalTimer possess any user accessible values like thisIntervalTimer.getMilliseconds; to return the current 'tick' value of the interval timer attached to the variable thisIntervalTimer. What I would be interested in is if any method exists to access any properties of this object, they must exist in some form as how would the browser know what event timer to update or trigger.

How to pause an interval while the tab is in the background, and unpause it once the focus comes back?
I made a jsfiddle:[url]
1.) notice how the numbers are counting up.
2.) remember the current number and navigate away from the page.
3.) wait 10 sec and return to the page....the numbers keep going up while you'r not on the page.
How can i make it only go up while on the page?

I'm having a hard time getting my head round it again. I know it could be more efficient in jQuery, but I'd be happy just to get it working, with an extra variable, in straight js.The function takes an array and progressively hides each element at constant interval, in this case 50ms:
function hide_50(arrayA,visibility,current) {
if ( current == null ) current = 0;
var arrayB=(typeof arrayA == 'string')? arrayA.split(',') : arrayA;

I have put together a script which does this:
1. Make ajax request (via getHTTPObject(), no libraries is used)
2. Create an iframe with script, src is "blank.html".
3. use iframe.document.write() to execute scripts (inkluding document.write based scripts) in the iframe.
4. call parent window's document to clone the iframe content.
5. Append the content clone to parent body.
Works like a charm in all browsers but IE, where every version - including IE9 beta - hangs on iframeWindow.document.close() with empty cache, leaving the window/tab unresponsible. When I force quit, restart and load the page again (now in cache) it works.What I've tried already:
* Googled.
* called the ajax request callback manually with string instead of request.responseText - it works even with empty cache here.Removed document.close() - resulting in scripts in iframe not executing at all (again, only with empty cache, cached pages works fine).
* Tested to make the ajax request synchronous - no difference.
Console.log trace:
Code:
append() begin
unlimited-scroll.js:160 install() begin
unlimited-scroll.js:194 iframe begin[code].....

I do pretty much all the computer related tasks, which includes computer system repair, audio/video editing, cd/dvd printing and duplication, document format and creation, etc etc. But when it comes to HTML (or other codes) I know very little. But we needed a website, so I use Homestead hosting and the Homestead (offline) Site Builder program.
Anyway, inside the sight builder program, they have the option to insert HTML Snippets. Which I use for various objects, off site tools, and other. But now I need to do something for which I have not been able to find a "premade" html code object, that can perform the task desired. I have searched and searched google and went through many sites, including this one. I have tried to take some codes which I thought I could alter to make it perform, but they just wouldn't work for what I needed them to do.
I need a code that will automate a "specific text message" to change daily, and to schedule a "different specific text message" to appear each day. I need to be able to schedule each days "texts" at the very least 31 days in advance. In other words, I need to make an array (I think that's what it is called) for the entire month:
Day 1 "today's text 1"
Day 2 "today's text 2"
Day 3 "today's text 3"
[code]....
If were possible to make an "array" that would go six months out (or more) that would be very helpful! But the longest that I have seen is one month at a time, so that may be as long as they go, but I'm not sure.On top of all of this, I need these changes to be performed at a specific time of the day. I would like them to be preformed at sunset everyday, but I don't think there is anyway to direct the code to look at like [URL] sunset times or such. So if I can at least choose a specific hour, like 8:00 pm, that will work, I will just have to adjust this every once in a while.
However, I don't want it to change just at 8:00pm in my timezone. I need it to change at 8:00pm according to the website viewers timezone. Is there a way to make the code "look" at the users computer and "get their time" and use that to adjust what text is displayed? In other words, I live in Indiana USA. If someone in Australia looked up the webpage on the 15th day of the month, but it was 9:00pm Their Time. The text I need to be displayed should be for "Day 16" from the array.

I'd like some direction on creating a small piece of Javascript that will populate my <select> boxes.Basically, I have a form for users to create events, with a start time and an end time. (These are the two select boxes).For example:
Code:
<select id="startTime">
<option value="12:00AM">12:00AM</option>
<option value="12:15AM">12:15AM</option>
etc.....
</select>
What I am trying to do is:
1) Have times populated in 15 minute incrementals from 12:00AM to 11:45PM
2) Have some type of "error checking" available to where the End Time must be after the start time. It would be nice for the script to automatically change the end time field to a time that is after the start time.
