I want to compress some javascript files using gzip/deflate.
The thing I worry about though is browser support. In my searches, I've seen some suggestions that some older browsers will send the http Accept-Encoding: gzip header, but they aren't actually capable of using a compressed javascript file.
I've seen various solutions which try to sniff the browser via the user_agent header and just serve the uncompressed version when it thinks the browser is gonna choke on it. But the sniffing examples I've seen seem to vary a lot, and I worry they aren't very good.
For example, look at the sample provided by the apache manual [URL] Used as-is, that's gonna catch opera and serve it an uncompressed file, when opera will handle it just fine. And I've also seen people say safari(which versions I'm not sure) doesn't like compressed javascript either, but I don't see anything in the example provided by mod_deflate that would save safari from doom.
Many of the webpages I've come across on this subject seem outdated or incomplete, which doesn't do much for my confidence.
What do you do? Part of me want's to just give these buggy browsers what they ask for when they say they accept gzip/deflate and let them explode....but I think there's still too many users of these older browsers to just do that. I feel I should make a good faith effort to try to make it work reasonably well. This seems like a very realistic issue and I'm somewhat suprised I'm not finding more information on it.

I'm new to JavaScript. I have relatively large amounts of text (~200 kB) that I need to transfer to my web application every now and then. Using RAR, I get a 5:1 compression ratio on these files, for example one of 180 kB is compressed to 34kB.
Is there some standard way to decompress files in JavaScript?

I have a website with no ssi, php, cgi...nothing. Plain old flat pages are all it serves.
I need to upload a list to it - a big, plain text list in html. A 2Mb list!
With gzip compress, it comes down to 91Kb, much more modem-friendly!
After about 30 minutes of googling, I haven't yet found a way of serving this page up like this.
I can't send headers as no php or .htaccess is allowed.
And please don't suggest I move to a "proper" web host! It's for a friend with a one-off need for a small website for about 2 months, and the freebie 10Mb is fine.

I'm finally diving into regexp by porting a perl script over to js that uses regexp to compress javascript into a bookmarklet capable format.I've successfully worked out 90% of the expressions but am troubled with a few, this one at the moment is odd:I want to remove the first line if it hasjavascript:So I thought str.replace(/^javascripts+:s+/, "") would be ok. I want javascript text, any space, colon, any space and new line. what I'm doing wrong.btw this is the original perl version
$src =~ s{^// ?javascript.+:.+
}{};

I've been stumped. I'm usually good at figuring this stuff out, but I'm completely confounded here.I have a form with tables in it to add items to a series. The rows are being added dynamically by Jquery on the click event.
$('#add_hybrid').click(function(){
$('#hybrid tr:last').after('<tr><td width="15%"><?=brands('hybrid');?><input name="clubtypes[]" value="6" type="hidden" /></td><td width="25%"><?

I am using jquery with the cookie plugin and I have multiple image buttons that can hide/show multiple elements. My question is how can I add a cookie to this code to remember whether each separate element is opened or closed?
The code,
$(document).ready(function() {
// choose text for the show/hide link - can contain HTML (e.g. an image)
var showText='<div class="expanddown"></div>';
var hideText='<div class="expandup"></div>';
// initialise the visibility check
var is_visible = false;
// append show/hide links to the element directly preceding the element with a class of "toggle"
$('.toggle').prev().append('<a href="#" class="togglelink">'+hideText+'</a>');
// capture clicks on the toggle links
$('a.togglelink').click(function() {
// switch visibility
is_visible = !is_visible;
// change the link depending on whether the element is shown or hidden
$(this).html( (!is_visible) ? hideText : showText);
// toggle the display - uncomment the next line for a basic "accordion" style
//$('.toggle').hide();$('a.toggleLink').html(showText);
$(this).parent().next('.toggle').slideToggle('fast');
// return false so any link destination is not followed
return false;
});
});
HTML,
<a class="togglelink" href="#"></a>
<div class="toggle">
Content
</div>

I have found a problem with <select multiple="multiple"> and .change() under ie6. The problem is ie6 fires first change event right after any other event, like selecting again, clicking mouse, pressing a key etc. It is perfectly seen on [URL]... Just click any option in demo, nothing will happen.
If i put a handler using plain DOM, i.e. $("select").get(0).onchange = function() { ... } the problem dissapears. So, it's definitely a bug with jquery. JQuery version 1.4.2.

In windows the code is working fine. Is there any option in window.open() method to open a popup window once. s there any known issue regarding this case?. Need a workaround to fix this issue.

I am setting up a text search with 3 search buttons to allow 3 different searches from the one text box. Each search has different values for the 2 hidden elements. So far I've got the 3 submit buttons working with the below code but I can't figure how to get the hidden values to be inserted. For each of the 3 different submits I need to tell javascript what the 2 hidden values are.
<SCRIPT language="JavaScript">
function OnSubmitForm()
{
if(document.pressed == 'questions')

Does anyone know of a Javascript slider that can function like Adobe's gradient creator?I'm not actually making gradients, I just need similar slider capabilities.I have a defined date range, let's say it's January 1 to Januaray 31. I want to make a slider that allows my user to split this date range into multiple ranges. So one person can do:
Jan 1 to Jan 5, Jan 6 to Jan 12, Jan 13 to Jan 31 Another person can do: Jan 1 to Jan 21, Jan 22 to Jan 31. How many regions they create doesn't matter to me. The goal is to pull it off with a Javascript slider that works similar to Adobe's gradient creator. Handle's can be added by clicking and removed by pulling it away from the slider. Handle's can also slide around fairly liberally.

I am familiar with the user built addEvent function used to load multiple functions in the window.onload property. However, I am curious as to the best way to do this across multiple JavaScript files. I thought I had seen somewhere code similar to the addEvent function was native to JavaScript now but I can't seem to find that anywhere.
Just to clarify, suppose I have 3 JavaScript files:
Code:
function foo() {
// do something here
}
fileB
[Code]....
note that it is not feasible to combine those functions into one file as they aren't always loaded together. What's the best way to load them all as a window.load?

Problem: This is essentially for a model number decoder. Several selection boxes full of coded information in a left column, decoded items appearing in right column. The 'decoded' divs will only show up when their coded counterparts are selected in the dropdown. The main problem is that I know nothing of Javascript.I have cobbled together enough stuff to get the "select box 1" to toggle the corresponding div, but have no clue how to get the next in series to toggle the next div. CSS:
HTML Code:
.col1 {
float:left;

Is it possible to call a callback from an anonymos function that is running as a callback itself? how would the correct code look? (i could not get that running)
If i try to animate a set of elements who match a selector, the animations will be executed on each element in some sort of a loop. how do i attach a callback that will be executed, after ALL elements have been animated instead after each element animation? is this possible at all?

I've found a jQuery tab script that can set up multiple tab sets however I need the ability to remember which last tab I clicked so that when I refresh the page, it will still be active. I read about the jQuery cookie plugin but I don't understand how to implement it.
I badly need this functionality (jQuery cookie plugin) to be added in the existing code below. It will be use for my personal site. I only know HTML and a little in CSS.
Below is the code:
PHP Code:
