Ajax :: Write String To IFrame As XML Without Server-Side Scripting

May 13, 2011

I am trying to write a string variable containing XML in the form of text into an iframe such that it shows up as formatted XML with the expand(+) and collapse (-) options that default in IE when opening an XML file.

The first thing I tried is writing the string to a file with .xml extension and setting the iFrame src to that file. This works well normally, however in this case, the file does not get created where I want to due to some security restrictions in IE which I cannot edit as I dont have admin rights.

Secondly I tried appending the string as innerHTML to that iframe but only the content within the XML tags without any formatting shows up which is not intended.

Thirdly I cannot use any server side scripting as this is a very controlled environment and I am not allowed to host servers or edit server scripts at will. This is totally out of question, so I guess Ajax or calling a costom defined web service wont help.

At best I can say, I am limited to HTML, Javascript and vbScript.

I am receiving the string as a responseText from an ajax request which is consuming a web service. If I use responseXML, it doesn't work.

The solution I am looking at is to either display it as formatted XML in an iFrame or to just throw it into a textarea which I am already doing and simultaneously write it to an XML file or do both. If not automatically, atleast have the user press a button and do it.

JQuery :: Firefox - Send Some Data To The Server And Put The Resulting HTML In A Div

Jun 10, 2010

I built a pretty simple Ajax request which needs to send some data to the server and put the resulting HTML in a div. Unforunately, I need to POST the data. I used .post() and it worked fine ... *on Chrome and Opera!* ... on Firefox no data gets posted even though firebug shows the data in it's console. I ended up building the longest possible request, just to try all the options. No luck. As soon as I POST anything, Firefox won't receive the data. If this was a Firefox issue, wouldn't I read about it everywhere? What's wrong?

Best Way To Send The Client Time To The Server?

Oct 21, 2009

What is the best way to get the client time to the server? Would I user http headers? (I dont know how to do that) or is ajax the best method? I could use ajax to send the unix timestamp to the server everytime a page loads and save the difference between it and the server timestamp as a session variable. sounds sensible?

I dont want to work with timezones but I do want to get the actual time set on the client's computer.

Get The Last Character Of String?

Feb 4, 2011

I had a difficult time figuring out how to get or test the last character of a string with javascript.

I found plenty of removing the last character, but not for just checking what the last character of a string is using javascript.

// create string
var str = new String("No Periods Allowed.");
// alternatively get string from field:
// var str = document.getElementById('textbox').value;

[Code]....

Well, finding that easily on a search would have saved me some time.

AJAX :: Cross-domain Calls - Loaded From One Server Into A Website On Another Server

Mar 11, 2010

I'm trying to write a script that will be loaded from one server into a website on another server. This script is trying to talk (ajax) to the server that it comes from but I'm getting "Access Denied" errors. I'm well aware that cross-domain calls are not allowed for security reasons so my question is how does Google Analytics work because essentially thats what I'm trying to accomplish. I can embed a Google Analytics script into my website and it'll gather data and send it back to Google.

Invalid Character In String Reference

Jul 23, 2005

Is there anything 'wrong' with setting the value of a drop down menu
using the following?

document.frmStep1.drpInvaddress.value = 'A1020761603!>>R2'

This string is a key in our database that I have no control over and I
want to set the value of the menu according to this value because it
is unique. I suspect that the '' or the '>' or the '!' is making
Javascript think that this is a different type of data than string.

Is there a way to 'force' Javascript to interpret this as string?

form["text"].value == "Hello

So how do I do my check?

a bad character?

I tried:

It didn't help.

if(form1.elements(i).name=="text_website")
{
var bad_email_chars="/!#$%&*+^ ()_-=|~`?;:,'"
var h,j
for(h=0;h<bad_email_chars.length;h++)
{
for(j=0;j<input_str.length;j++)
{
if(bad_email_chars.charAt(h)==input_str.charAt(j))
{
alert("you have atleast one bad character in you website address. You may not submit this form until you correct this.")
window.event.returnValue=false
form1.elements(i).focus();
}}}}

Also, How do I format with indentations and as non wraping text the messages I send to this forum?
