JQuery :: Isolating Specific Input Field Selector
Feb 23, 2010
I'm trying to update the input field that ends in the word 'label', but not update the one that ends in 'label' and has 'choice' in the name. (really just looking for line 9 to work).
<html><head>
<script src="jsjquery-1.3.2.min.js" language="javascript" id="javascript"></script>
<script>
$(function(){
$(':input[name$=label]').val('111');
$(':input[name*=choices]').val('222');
$(':input[name$=label]').find(':input[name*=choices]').val('333');
$(':input[name$=label]').find(':not:input[name*=choices]').val('444');
});
</script></head><body>
<input name="section[x].fr[y].label" value="" />
<input name="section[x].fr[y].choices[z].label" value="" />
</body></html>

I am having a form with two input fields. I want to enter some text in the first input field and then the second field should get the same text. Is there a simple way (maybe a plugin) to do this with jQuery? It would be perfect if I even could output all these input fields values as normal text in <p> or <li> tags.

As recently as 1.4.3 $('input:text') would find input elements with no type attribute, but after upgrading to 1.5.1 that is no longer the case.
Is this a bug or an intended refactor to be more standards compliant?
FYI - this is the selector I now have to use: $('input:text,input:not([type])')

I'm trying to create an accordion (jquery ui) that shows information about its items when clicked. The information for these items is grabbed from 4 locations:- one to get the item's basic structure info one to populate an 'interoperability' info box where the 'service' and 'about' properties match a box like the 'interoperability' box, but for 'similarity' info a file with user-created 'annotation' information about sub-items that could be shown.

I know about the :input selector and the fact that it includes all input types, but I need to be more specific by either explicitly including or excluding certain types. I want to monitor these types for change: text box, text area, select and password - how do I go about constructing this selector statement?

I'm working with jQuery on a form where each input element is contained in an <li> element.
Some fields are read-only, identified by a class ".readonly", and I'd like to bind a jQuery function to these fields' "focus" event, to send the focus to the next input whose class is not read-only.
But, because of the containing <li> elements, I don't think .next('input') will work, since the <input> tags aren't siblings.
Is there a simple selector that will do the job without having to climb up and down the DOM via parents and children? To me that feels unsatisfactory and brittle, because should the designer decide to change the layout (lists within lists, <div>'s within <li>'s), my DOM-climbing code might break.

I'm using Validation plugin from [URL]
I'm trying to implement a validation in my form, but that should not be bound to an specific field. in fact, I have three input type=text, and I need at least one of them to be filled (like a conditional 'required').
I could create a new validation method, like:
$.validator.addMethod("foo", function(value) {
// short version:
return field1.value + field2.value + field3.value != "";
}, 'required');

I am not new to jQuery but I just want to ask the best way to approach this. Basically I have a textfield in which the user is going to type in a number (for example 20) and after this textfield lose focus jQuery will be triggered to create whatever number of textfields the user put before (in this case 20).
So, to illustrate: How many users do you have: [ 2 ](and after the field above lose focus, the below will be generated)
Fullname: [ ]
Fullname: [ ]

I have a problem created by my complete [rookie] status – only second time venturing into jQuery. I created a simple shopping cart using php and the PayPal buttons (1: buy now, 2: add to cart). The php back end does it great, it generates the table and the buttons and everything works just like it’s supposed to; Except, I forgot to add sizes. So I found out what I need to add, and I realize that the way the buttons work, I will have two different text boxes for size. Not very visually appealing, and since I’m not submitting this to the server before it goes to PayPal to pay, I cannot modify it with php the way I normally would. jQuery / javascript are my only hope of making this work. What I want to do:Have a single textbox where [size] is entered by the user.
Copy the value from the [correct] text box to the Value=”” section of the now hidden field in the PayPal form That way, no matter whether they [BUY NOW] or [ADD to CART] the right size is submitted to the PayPal shopping cart. This is the actual PayPal code that I’m trying to change
<table>
<tr>
<td>
<input type="hidden" name="on1" value="Size" maxlength="200">Size</td>
[code].....
I got this far, and then decided to find how to insert the "enteredVALUE" into the right place in the input text field (what I called output) and I've not been able to figure out how to stuff it in there.

So I have to ask some stupid questions and make sure that there is not something wrong in this simple syntax. I am trying to get input field attributes type and tagname by field ID. Heres the code..
Code JavaScript:
var type = $('#' + input_id).attr('type');
var tag = $('#' + input_id).attr('tagName');
When I look in firebug I see there is the correct ID in input_id variable and that the input field with that id exists. But for tag and type variables I just get 'undefined' for reason unknown.. syntax is correct or?

We have a commercial shopping cart software installed on our website and since it is proprietary, we do not have access to source code. But they do allow you to include custom javascript on the web pages that they generate. What I want to do is add some text after a specifc INPUT tag that appears on the page within a TD tag. The problem is, that they do not have any specifc ID assigned to the INPUT or TD tag, and although the INPUT tag has a name assigned to it, the name is used in other tags as well and is not unique.
Below is the code that I used to solve the problem, but I want to know if there is a more efficient way to do it... Basically my code grabs every TD tag on the page, and then loops thru all of them looking for the specifc INPUT tag characteristics and then inserts the text afterwards (it needs to work in both Firefox and IE so you cannot use innerHTML).
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN">
<html>
<head>

I'm inexperienced with Javascript and I found this script, but I'm not sure how to alter it to do what I want. I have a PHP script that creates forms in a loop. $z in this case could equal 3, and 3 forms each containing 1 Position/Office field will be created including 1 Candidate field. If a user wants to add a new candidate for that specific position, I want to be able to add a Candidate text field just relevant to that Office/Position. With this script, I've only been able to pop up a text field under one Office/Position and not under any other Office/Position. I think it has something to do with my divs.
Javascript:
var inival=0; // Initialise starting element number
// Call this function to add textbox
function addTextBox()
{

I created this test routine to return the form containing a certain
input element:
function GetElementForm(element)
{
// Return the form that contains element.
varmyElement = element;
while (myElement)
{
myElement = myElement.parentNode;
if (myElement)
{
var sTagName = myElement.tagName;
if (sTagName)
{
if (sTagName.toLowerCase() == "form")
{
break;
}}}}
return myElement;}
This seems to work for "well formed" HTML, but fails for example, when
a form is defined within a table.
