JQuery :: Counting Characters In A Text Area (page Counter)?
Nov 22, 2011
I am trying to count the characters in a text area in a form for sending sms from web to phone. Bulk sms standard is: maximum sms pages are 7 i.e 1071 characters; page 1 contains 160 characters, page 2 contains 146 characters and the rest 5 pages contains 153 characters.
Here is a javascript function I wrote but it's not working
function countPage(){
var clPg1 = 160; //character limit for page 1
var clPg2 = 146; //character limit for page 2
var clOtherPg = 153; //character limit for other pages
[Code].....

I have two text areas. I would like to prevent form submitting if the member does not enter at least 100 characters in each text area. There is no maximum number of characters, just the minimum (100 characters).
In case that he hit submit button I would like to display him a message that would inform him that he didn't enter minimum requested characters.
It would be neat if I could have the character counter below of each text area which should be decreased with each entered character.

I have character counter for textarea wich counting the characters.
Special character needs same place as two normal characters because of
16-bit encoding.
Counter is counting -2 when special character is added like some
language specific char.
How to count specials like 1 char?

This involves the use of an order form used to process a purchase via Paypal. The items are small rhinestone letters for names and such.
The form is very simple in that the purchaser enters into form field one: the letters they wish to purchase.
Form field two (this is where I rely on common sense by the purchaser): enter the number of letters entered in form field one.
Based on the number of letters entered in form field two, my form processes the correct cost for the purchase.
As you have already figured out, I am beginning to see people enter their letter orders w/out entering the number of letters ordered.
All that said: a way to count the letters entered in form field one and auto-populate form field two with that number. Code:

Is it possible to get the size of a message (<string>) in kb rather than counting the characters?Note: Some characters could be double byte such as Chinese characters.Reasoning: I need to check if my message is over 10kb and if so split appropriately into chunks of <= 10kb.

I'm trying to make this tool for some fellow librarians who answer questions via text messaging. As you see beneath that page's text box, the catch is that the PC-to-SMS client treats the forward slash as two characters.
I'd like if possible for the JavaScript character counter to recognize slashes and automatically add 'two' to the character count, instead of just one, for each forward slash.
(BTW the reason for 155 instead of 160 is that the client adds a shortcode to our outgoing texts.)

1. When I have the "<textarea>" code lines in it put a text-area on the page, but it puts all of the code following that first text-area line into the text-area box and doesn't execute that segment of code.
2. When there is no "<textarea>" (for the sake of seeing if the rest of it worked) it doesn't check the survey.
I'm stumped and can't figure out what to do at this point Code and pictures follow:

I've been following this tutorial (and it works great)URL...Just cannot figure out how to make one of the Text Fields a Text Area with cols="45" rows="5".Every combination I've tried turns off the validation. I've already added completely different text fields from what are shown in the tutorial so I know how to change up the javascript I just can't get the Text Area right.

<table cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" border="0" ><tr><td valign="top" style="font: inherit;">Hello, I would like to know if I can load a small text from a external source into a textarea. the external source is a php that will write some clean text depending on the vars received. I know load() can do the job for a div but I don't think it will work for a textarea.
</td></tr></table>

A while ago I queried how to count total characters in an output document and never really got anywhere. this query builds on from that. basically what I need to do is as follows.
- Using a basic input form, gather information.
- Populate strDoc with the info.
- When the button is clicked, the strDoc is populated and formatted and displayed in a popup window using:
What I'm trying to do is create a function that will count all characters in the strDoc (including spaces/LF/CR etc). If the total of the output doc is > 3800 characters, then the function will separate the doc into chunks no greater than 3800 characters and display each chunk in either a different window or a single window labled in order of chunk (ie. 1, 2 or 3).
This is way beyond me at this stage, but is critical to a project I'm working on at the moment.

I'm just starting out learning and have sort of given myself a couple of basic problems to solve. I pretty quickly found something that's apparently hard to Google.I've made a page that shows a counter number, starting at 0, with buttons that will increase or decrease the number by 1 or 10.So I'd like to figure out how to show that number in red when it is a negative number and in green when it is a positive number. I've tried a couple of things, including an if... else, but here's my latest crack:
var counter=0;
function countUp() {
lastCounter=counter;

I have a form setup so that selecting a radio button opens a specific text field. The problem is if the user starts to enter information, then switches to a different radio button (perhaps they chose the wrong radio to start), the text they already started to enter on the previous textfield doesn't get cleared. This will be a problem later when inserting to sql.

As of right now I have a code that will work in IE but wont work in FireFox...go figure. Basically what I want to have happen is when you type in an area code it will provide an output in a predetermined area of the page.
For Example:
Input- 512
Output - Austin, TX
The code that I have doesn't work with firefox and I was just wondering if there was a code that would allow that to happen.

Would u pls let me know whether the following is possible or not: User can be able to insert text on a text-box or text-area(form) as usually we use text-area to do so. But I want to put some readonly text using an open and close tag
for example: <ro>This is readonly text</ro>insert your text here Can I be able to make the text inside <ro>..</ro> tag readonly, it means user can't be able to modify or delete this readonly text. readonly text length not fixed. only way to recognize the readonly text is the <ro> tag.
